this could be fucking huge...

Marty Noble at MLB.com takes a look at how far Duaner Sanchez has come after a year of rehabbing from a shoulder injury that kept him out all of last season.

according to Noble…

“He probably is ahead of every pitcher in camp and those who will report Thursday, the reporting day for pitchers and catchers. He twice has faced batters, pushed his pitch count to 50, and thrown [multiple bullpen sessions].”

Sanchez says…

“Now I’m in the best shape of my life, I haven’t looked like this since I was 19. Everybody can see it. I feel great. I’m ready to do whatever they want me to do.”

just off the mets blog, carlos beltran told reporters " tell jimmy rollins were the team to beat"

...posted by Matthew Cerrone...

As noted earlier, Carlos Beltran reported to camp today, earlier than expected. He took some swings, then talked with reporters.

According to SNY’s Kevin Burkhardt, when asked about the division, Beltran gave a bland response. However, before walking away from reporters, he smiled, laughed and said:

“Tell Jimmy Rollins we are the team to beat.”

I considered taking a sick day to watch. Then I realized that I'll need my sick days to call in for regular season games. Plus they'll replay it tonight on SNY.

John Maine got rocked yesterday. Stupid spring training. Worthlessly gets you psyched about Pelfrey's great showing one day and nail-bitingly nervous about 2 innings of shit from Maine.

Delgado's MRI negative, but hip still an issue (http://www.newsday.com/sports/baseball/ny-spmets035600209mar03,0,11546.story)

VERO BEACH, Fla. - Carlos Delgado returned to Tradition Field yesterday morning with a large manila envelope tucked under his left arm. It contained the MRI film from Saturday's sudden trip to New York, but not many answers for an injury the Mets are describing as an "impingement" of the right hip.

Results of the MRI were negative, but here's what Delgado did reveal shortly after his arrival: The condition, which affects the hip socket, feels as if something is "catching" inside the joint. The symptoms are not specifically caused by hitting or running, but Delgado can make it happen by twisting his leg in a certain way.

For treatment, Delgado received an anti-inflammatory injection during his eight-hour stay in New York and has been prescribed medication. Also, he plans to adhere to a stretching and exercise routine that he hopes can keep the hip socket in better alignment.

For a guy who's bat was slowing down last year, this is the last thing he needed. Hip rotation is critical for generating power and getting around on an inside pitch. The Doctors I heard explain this said its basically arthritis, bone on bone and its genetic and chronic. He claimed it isn't chronic, but went on to say it bothered him last year and all off season.

This could be an explanation for why he dropped off so fast. They have him on some meds and exercises to help align the hip, just have to wait and see if that helps.

It looks bad now, but wait and see how he plays. It could very well be more mild than it sounds. For this year at least, he could still be fine. Maybe no day games after night games, one day off a week, late inning defensive caddy. Stuff like that. But the fact that it flared up so quickly in spring training def has to worry you. He'll probably be getting cortisone shots all year, and you can only do so many.

Wouldn't it be ironic if the Mets have the best pitching staff in the NL this year but with the injuries to Alou/Delgado/etc they have trouble scoring runs? It would be the opposite of last year's team with largely the same roster.

Orioles at Mets (Port St. Lucie) (http://s245.photobucket.com/albums/gg76/BornInEightySix/Orioles%20at%20Mets%20March%202008/?albumview=slideshow)

I was sitting with the scouts tonight, Johan was touching 93 on the gun

And King Omar was sitting on my right, and he was an incredibly nice guy and he was rocking the new CitiField hats

Johan's stuff is absolutely disgusting, his changeup might be the most deceptive and mind boggling pitch I've seen in a while

That's it, the Mets are done in Port Santana Lucie. One more Spring game to go and it's time to get down to business. Has anyone read the Mets Outlook (http://newyork.mets.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20080324&content_id=2455308&vkey=news_nym&fext=.jsp&c_id=nym) article on Mets.com. It may contain one of the dumbest statements I've ever heard in baseball.

"You'll know they're in trouble if...
An absence of Alou that is longer than expected could allow opponents to load up on left-handed relief pitching. Without Alou, the Nos. 4-8 spots in the order could be undermined by left-handed pitching, no matter who the left fielder."

Because it's no problem to just stock up on left-handed relief pitching. Go ahead teams. Give Mike Stanton one more shot because he's a left handed reliever. Even Ryan Church bats .250 against him. I'm sick of everyone making such a big deal out of righty/lefty matchups.

And do we know if Angel Pagan is definitely making the team. I've been seeing a lot about Fernando Tatis, and nothing about Pagan in the last two weeks. He's still hitting well and should've been a lock to make the team in lieu of Alou (ya like that?).

This is why its imperitive for Delgado to bounce back.

If he can be good enough to be in the 5 slot after Alou comes back, we can solve that problem with Alou in the 6

I don't think anyone is counting on Schneider for anything more then .250/.330/.350 and Church will be out of the lineup more times then not against lefties until he can prove he'll hit them

Endy is a career .290 hitter vs. lefties, and Pagan was hitting .285 against lefties in the minors

I'm not worried about the bottom half, Im more concered with the season Delgado NEEDS to have

At worst Delgado needs to hit .260 with 35 HRs and 95-100 RBI

Agreed. Delgado is the key, and the whole lineup falls apart if Easley or Tatis are getting regular first base time. You can't complain about Church when he's a step, albeit a tiny one, above Green just for being younger. I think with Johann and Maine able to go 8 innings in almost every game, the bullpen, which is deeper this year, won't suffer the late season fatigue they saw last year. Perez scares me, but I'll take the occasional meltdown because he's also going throw some gems. After that, who gives a shit who the 5th starter is. Give it to Pelfrey and find out once and for all if he's the real deal or not. He's got great stuff, but goddamn does he get flustered and lose the plate. The Braves rotation is old (stop it with Hampton and Glavine. What are they really going to get out of those two. And Chuck James can only beat the Mets.), the Phillies pitching is a mess. Mets win the division.

Perez I think is going to have a monster year, which will be great until he comes asking for Roy Oswalt money in the off season and Omar will let him walk

Maine has been pretty much unhittable the entire exhibition season, and as long as he doesnt hit the wall again this year (2.71 ERA 1st half/5.53 2nd) he's going to be great

Duque went back to his old windup yesterday and was pitching very well, but he might not be able to hold up all year on it

Pedro is going to be our fourth best pitcher by the end of the year and thats an excellent "problem" to have

I hate to put the season on one guy since takes around 35 guys to do it, but if we're going to make another run, its on the bat of Delgado

The Marlins downfall, last year and today is their pitching and overall defense, so the 7 runs should be overlooked. But Johann was outstanding, really just the one mistake pitch, and Sosa and Heilman were filthy. The Marlins can hit, even without Cabrera, so I'm optimistic given such a productive pitching performance from the Metropolitans today.

…the buzz from Miami suggests that Pedro Martinez’s injury may not be as bad as initially feared…still, i believe he may be put on the disabled list, for precautionary purposes, and he’ll be replaced on the roster by Nelson Figueroa…

During an appearance on ESPN 1050, Andrew Marchand said he sat next to Martinez on his flight back to New York.

According to Marchand, Martinez did not walk with a limp, and said he feels ‘fine,’ though he will not know if a trip to the disabled list is necessary until after this morning’s MRI.

hell yeh it kept the streak going and we werent the team who finally lost to them

he will but only to 2nd place

why ??

giants......took them to 2 super bowl wins

pats.... took them to a super bowl but lost

jets ... took them to an afc championship game

cowboys ... took them to the playoffs and lost

so in each new team he has gone one level worse then the previous team

day started bad with pedro

but ended quite nicely

pedro was a bad investment from day one! now, with another injury, he's getting into chad pennington "wait til he gets healthy again, then everything will be great" territory.

aside from santana, their pitching is sketchy. they should cut their losses with pedro and find a new starter, rather than hope that pedro will be back and stay healthy for the rest of the season.

They don't even have to take him. We'll hogtie him, put him in my trunk and dump him in front of Shea. If they want him fine, if not, he's still out of our hair.

i feel really bad for mets fans not getting to see pedro dominate very much during his 4 years there, i dont think he is going to make over 10 or 12 starts this year (just a feeling). how many did he make last year, 6?

i probably enjoyed watching petey pitch here in boston more than any other pitcher ever, maybe clemens is close but pedro's control and movement were just crazy.

at least you got johan to soften the blow tho.

Oh no. I'll personally give him a ride back to Philly. I'll have to burn my car afterwards but it will be worth it.

Maybe one day someone will give John Maine and Ollie Perez some credit. I don't see how they constitute as "sketchy"

and they barely have had Pedro the past 2 seasons anyway, and came within a strike of the WS and 1 game of the division title

I honestly don't think the Mets will pay him what he wants. He had to take them to arbitration because they obviously didn't think he was worth it. Will be hard not to if he gives another 15 wins though.

Are you insane? A bad investment? Without Pedro this franchise is still in the shitter.

Without Pedro the chips don't fall with Beltran and pretty much everymove after that. We didnt need him to make one start for that contract to pay off

Sketchy after Santana? Oh forgot those two 15 game winners behind Santana

Sigh.

He's going to come looking at Roy Oswalt money and Barry Zito money

Everyone will wait till Sabathia sets the market first though.

bad investment ?? no

not if you believe minayas secondary reason for signing him which was so that other puerto ricans, dominicans, etc. would see him as a met and want to be mets

also he almost produced what we wanted him to do , a world series victory in 06
we made it to game 7 of the nlcs without him and with a healthy pedro its possible that we could have done what the cards did

either way it wasnt a bad investment, so far it hasnt been great but sometime in the future his signing might prove more valuable than wins or losses

Towelie
04-03-2008, 07:55 PM
Without Pedro I would bet my house we wouldn't have signed Fernando Martinez or Delios Guerra

Without Guerra we have no Santana

Its a domino effect. Looking back in 15-20 years, December 15, 2004 will go down as the day that turned this franchise around. He gave the franchise credibility.

Pedro Martinez and Omar Minaya saved this franchise.

I'd even go as far to say without the signing of Pedro, we might not be talking about a CitiField right now.

Interesting enough, the front of the apple is actually going to be in play:

As far as the actual Shea apple, its either going to be repaired and brought over, bronzed or auctioned for charity

you have to think logically and by seasons end it will most likely be phils and mets for the division and the braves a distant 3rd, maybe even 4th depending on how long the nats hold on

so here ya gotta go braves
