Im watching online & its pretty amazing how few people are sticking it out to the end.
Brewers just went up 5-1!!!!
Sadly thats how many people were there when it started. And in the nicest way possible. Fuck your Brewers

Ohhh we followed up a painful loss with a quote for a bad movie...ouch.
Then again, you do wish the dopey bastard swung away. This team deserves everything they get...when you have a man on 3rd with nobody out in the bottom of the 9th and cant drive him in, you stink. Painful to watch them collapse again. I hope tommorow's game gets rained out, so I have an extra day to re-cooperate.

I've got a terrible feeling about Santana on three days rest. Especially given the amount of pitches he's throwing lately. Besides, what does it matter who the starter is when you consistently leave men in scoring position with less than two outs? It looks like the Cubs are just riding it out now, so the Brewers are in good shape these next two days. Stupid Craig Carton guaranteed a sweep this weekend, Boomer said he'd punch him in the face Monday if the Mets choke. I hope he sticks to his promise.

um.
things stopping me.... well, there's money.
and money.
i am not a rich fuck who has premium seats but chooses not to go... i am a ham and egger who must watch her spending very carefully.
but if you want to buy me some tickets from an online scalper i will happily go! :bye:
That's a shame. I'm in the same boat. Just got back from spending like 300 bucks on glasses for the kids.
But it's Shea Stadium, never to be again. I've been there when they hosted the Phils-I know a lot of people (Opie) talks trash about it, but Shea and Veterans Stadium are the parks I really fell in love with baseball in.
As much as I bash the Mets, it's always fun to goof on and with you Mets fans. I hope someone gets you tickets.
as upsetting as it is, this is way less upsetting than last year.
Last year they were the best team in the division, and threw it away.
This year they had opportunities, but couldn't capitalize. Last year their defense made incredible bonehead plays. This year they couldn't recover from loss of John Maine and Billy Wagner.
Yes they screwed up. Minaya made a number of tactical errors, especially on the pen- like not keeping Stephen Register, but instead relying on Matt Wise being healthy. Willie (and Manuel as well) over used a bad pen. Aaron Heilman collapsed.
The difference in record though isn't that the Mets are worse than last year, it's that the Phillies were better. a month ago the Brewers were locked into the Wild Card- so it shouldnt be shocking that they made it back.
I'll be there tomorrow. I don't know if it would be better for them to lose today and be out of it before tomorrow- so the fans can forget this season and just remember the good times.

Why am I doing this to myself? Why am I watching this game? I have come to terms with the fact that they are not making the playoffs. I'm actually a little happy that I'll be getting my $200 back from unusable playoff tickets. So please tell me why I'm sitting here on my couch, eating Kraft Dinner (I'm not Canadian, I just love calling it that), taking a break from painting Babybandit's new room, and watching this team.

Ummm....Sadism??
Come on...you know the Mets will win today, just to keep that glimmer of hope alive, before they crush you guys once more tomorrow.
Just like that 14-1 game, or however badly they beat Florida on that Saturday before the Glavine debacle last year.
I'm a Mets fan today, for strategic purposes.

If the Mets hold on today and the Brewers somehow lose against the JV Cubs today, every Met fan will be screaming 'it's destiny' for the next 18 hours of so.
It's the most schizophrenic fanbase in sports. They're ready to jump after every loss, and ready to proclaim their team one of the five greatest teams in sports history after every win.
(Not talking about you specifically, PD...or Friday...or Boss, who's perpetually a miserable curmudgeon about all his teams, regardless of wins or losses....just the fanbase, in general).
On a side note, Santana is amazing.
The fact that he's been able to pull this off is a testament to the guy.

Wow, you certainly come out of the woodwork when "your team" is in the playoff hunts. I have to say I seriously have my red wing/met doubts.
Also, how bad is this going to be if the pen loses it in the 9th!?! If it doesn't happen, you know the Brewers are winning their last two so this win would be meaningless.

He has been amazing for a long time KC. And what's even more impressive to me is that Minny lost both Santana and Hunter (after years of the same) yet continue to be in the playoff races time and time again.
Twins have the best organization in MLB hands down.

I'm old school (and old). I root for my team, win or lose. I know there are plenty of bandwagoneers who proclaim they are the greatest- and wanna bitch slap other fans. I don't do that. I also don't mind your posts- I see where its from, and you too love your team - and love to tweak those who would tweak you back . I said this several years ago on OA.com- my slogan was A.B.A - Anyone But Atlanta. Even though I can't root for Phils, at least they have real fans, unlike most Atlanta fans who think stealing a chant from FSU is being a fan.
On a side note, Santana is amazing.

I read at some point that the song by Steam, "Kiss Him Goodbye" didn't contain any guitar, only keyboards. In spite of the lip synced video.
The other point is that "kiss Him Goodbye" the mega hit, was originally intended as the throwaway b side of the single but caught on instead!.

good one.
go back to the phillies thread and stop being a dick.
You know what, I'll give you guys a few tips on what the Mets should do this offseason:
#1 - Keep Daniel Murphy in LF instead of moving him to 2B; make him the everyday starter
#2 - Sign Orlando Hudson to play 2B
#3 - Bring Back Delgado
#4 - Forget about K-Rod (too much money and too many years)...go after Brian Fuentes to close. In addition, sign Chad Cordero to an incentive laden contract as a low-risk, high-reward reclamation project.
Now, as far as the starting rotation goes, you have Santana, Pelfrey, Maine as the 1-2-3.
Let Ollie walk. Too inconsistent and unreliable, and not worth what he'll command on the market.
Fill out the rotation with a solid veteran like Derek Lowe, and then groom Jonathan Niese for the 5th spot.
In the bullpen, I'd bring back Joe Smith, Pedro Feliciano, and Luis Ayala (although as a middle reliever). Schoeneweis in under contract for a decent amount of money, so you hold onto him as a clean up guy in blowouts.
Non-tender Duaner Sanchez...he's done.
Go out and grab Will Ohman and Juan Cruz off the open market. for late inning work.
So you end up with:
C - Schneider/Castro (there's no real way to upgrade this offseason)
1B - Delgado
2B - Hudson
3B - Wright
SS - Reyes
LF - Murphy
CF - Beltran
RF - Church
Rotation:
Santana
Pelfrey
Maine
Lowe
Niese
And then the bullpen:
Fuentes
Cruz
Ohman
Smith
Feliciano
Ayala
Schoeneweis
That team could do pretty well.

Most people root for a team based on geography. Being they both started in Queens, it makes sense. Just like me, a loser who's father grew up in college point.

Funny...last year I was jumping all over ya for pounding on the misery of the Mets, yet this is along the same lines I was thinking. In all honesty, when they couldnt command a lead against the Cubs last week, nor drive in a run, they didnt want to get to the playoffs. Sure it sounds like all of this is coming in hindsight. I have the Saturday ticket deal for Shea and last year at the 2nd to last game John Maine almost threw the no hitter.
This year, the 2nd to last game before, Johan throws that great game, but the Mets were playing almost as bad as last year. This team just wasnt fighting for the spot. I know the bullpen hasnt been great, but you figure with what is at stake they would figure out what they are doing wrong and correct it, if only for 15 days. No. They chose their shit path and they are living in it now.
Now as for those corrections a lot of them I agree with, although I have some different ideas on the bullpen. Still in all, I do agree that Minaya is a garbage GM. And how the fuck do you give a contract extension BEFORE the season ends?? Shameful thing is they were hitting better than last year, and the starters were better as well. That bullpen is attrocious. And I agree they all should be put on trial for treason. It is like they all conspired to be horrendous. Hang em all!!!

I don't think that there's a lot of incentive to spend a lot of money during the off-season. The new park will be a big draw. They've got to worry a little less about winning games.

I like a lot of what you say. I LOVE Derek lowe for this team

Well, I had no computer this weekend, only minimal time, but I figured I might as well share how I feel. This was one of the most stressful 6 months of my life. The way it ended was fucking terrible. I thought Delgado had it and when the ball came down, I pretty much knew it was over. I still tried to have faith, but alas it was over. I was pretty fucking bummed out. Then the closing ceremonies started. and I looked at the crowd and saw about 45,000 fans still there. I thought to myself, how many teams fans would still be there to support there team after what just happened? And it made me smile. I was still proud to be a Mets fan and always will be. Then when #16 came out on the field, a tear came to my eye. It is happeneing now again as I type. mets fans telling Doc it's ok and thank you. welcome home. wally, ronnie, Keith, hojo, el sid, Bobby O, the kid, timmy tueffel, straw, then seeing fonzie, mike, robin and todd... and of course all the old timers bud, tom terrific, ron and the rest. we may not have had the longest, most historic past, but it was a damn great one that has given us so many memories. I will miss Shea stadium dearly. When Tom and Mike closed the gates and the lights went out, the tears flowed.
Yes losing out this season sucked, but honestly this team had some struggles and it is tough to overcome 29 blown saves and 11 9th inning blown leads. This team played their asses off for Jerry Manuel. I don't care what anyone said. Honestly, in June if someone told you we'd be playing for playoff spot on the last day of teh season, would you believe them? would you have signed for it? I sure would have.
Maybe I am delusional, maybe I am a homer, but you know what? i don't care. I live and die by this team. Family, friends, Mets. Maybe Shea coming down will be a cleansing. See you at Citi

don't worry, you will be joining in a week.
yes, it's not easy being a Met fan. the team that teases. Would it have been better to be the Detroit Tigers that crapped the bed so early? probably not.
The team had injuries(Maine, Church), but some of those injuries could been predicted (Alou, Pedro, Wagner, El Duque). They got big time performances from Tatis and Easley, and they got hurt when they were needed most. That doesn't mean injuries are the excuse- every team gets injuries; its just part of the problem.
Lindstrom? he would have been better than what they had, but it's not like they traded away Ryan Sandberg.
John Harper's take on the trades is pretty true (http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/baseball/mets/2008/09/28/2008-09-28_omar_minayas_deals_provide_no_relief_for-3.html)
Minaya tried trading not so young minor league relievers for younger starters - but it didn't work out. Brian stokes could wind up being Lindstrom.
Omar had some mistakes, and some good moves (Tatis, insisting on keeping Pelfrey, Easley, etc.) The biggest problem is you can't have a revolving door GM - you need SOME sort of continuity. I liked Omar, but if you could tell me Hunsicker was coming back, I'd be happy as well.
The post game activities showed what this team needs - a Dykstra, Backman, Teufel, etc- grinder. as much as I'd hate to admit it, Philly has those guys. The other big mistake was not going after Lidge; if Mets had traded for him to be setup guy with Wagner, they would have probably would have won more before Wags went down, and obviously he was difference. Credit to Gillick.

I've been a Phillies fan since I was 4 years old in 1972. I went to Veteran's Stadium before I went to Kindergarten. I've had my "buttons pushed" more times by Mets fans then I've ever pushed here.
Next year, if it goes the other way, I expect nothing less from you guys.
But I'm a Phillies fan, do or die. All other players on all other teams are enemies. Respected enemies, because Santana is just awesome to watch on the mound and Beltran and Reyes seem to do no wrong against us.
But I hate the NY Mets because that's the team that everybody who wants to play in the NL East want to sign with. We lost Wagner to you, and luckily that turned out to be in our favor. But Gillick promised us when he became GM Wagner was his "top priority" and we still lost him to you. Don't worry about him. When he comes back you're gonna love him to death even more then you did before.
Seriously, I think unless Giles and Montgomery do a 180 and pour money into the bullpen to get real pitching to back up Cole and Myers, this is probably going to be our best and last shot for a while for a pennant and a chance to win the World Series.
So no worries. After we wrap up the 09 season next year against the Astros, I'll be checking my PM inbox for pics of golf clubs and empty lockers. Until then, root for the NL East, and if we don't make it, be sure to root for the NL in the World Series.

I hate the Mets because of the number of Mets fans that believe, in those rare instances throughout their existence where the Mets have been successful, that they are on par with the Yankees, and go out of their way to obnoxiously flaunt this belief.
2006 was a reaffirmation of this for me.
As for some of the points you make about the Phillies, Scott, I disagree with most of them actually.
First, I think the Phillies are very well set up for at least the next two years to contend.
They've got enough pitching prospects and a few good positional ones to reload, the very beginnings of which will start next season with Happ and Carrasco.
Second, they've poured a ton of money into the bullpen. Lidge got a huge extension, they signed Romero to a ridiculous deal for a middle reliever after last season, and Madson and Durbin will get decent chunks of cash through arbitration. I also expect them to spend to retain Eyre.
I would actually be very surprised if the Phillies were not in contention again next season, and even in 2010, barring some major injuries.
The organization is actually in good shape for the first time in a long time.

I agree with Kevin Burkhardt when he said to break up the core. He said the Mets should get rid of Delgado. Even though he had a great year him along with Wright, Reyes and Beltran didnt get it done for 2 yrs in a row. This team needs a shake up. Also, whats preventing Wright from being the leader is Delgado b/c Wright also defers to him. Plus, Delgados value is high right now. You can put Evans at first with Murphy if you want, although its speculated Evans will go for a pitcher or be put with Castillo in a package to get that contract off the books. Orlando Hudson be ideal. Hudson has said he would take undermarkey value to play for the Mets. I think Ollie can come back. i want him back. Say what you want, but Warthen really helped him, although Derek Lowe is not a horribel replacement.
Mets are reportedly looking for a cather and perhaps a replacement for Church. Id love Jason Varitek on this team. Yes, hes old but he provides leader ship and that grit we need. Also, heres an replacement for Delgado: Mike Jacobs. He, alone with 17 other Marlins, are eligible for arbitration. Perhaps the Mets can get him back. Eric Brynes could be available. Hes perfect for this team. balls to the wall type player.
Heres my lineup next season id liek to see:
SS-Reyes
LF-Murphy
3B-Wright
CF-Beltran
1B-Jacobs
RF-Brynes
2B-Hudson
C-Varitek
Rotation:
Santana
Maine
Perez/Lowe
Pelfrey
Niese/FA

2006 was a reaffirmation of this for me.
I'd like to disagree with you there, but I can't now.
I'm old skool (and old) as I've said; I may hate other teams players, but I never really taunt, since I KNOW my team has had a lot of lean years. the whole sh*t talking is a more recent phenomenon. As for the Yankees, I never hated them growing up - but they have the most "entitled" fans. Any Met fan who wants to emulate that is an idiot.
I would actually be very surprised if the Phillies were not in contention again next season, and even in 2010, barring some major injuries.
The organization is actually in good shape for the first time in a long time.
He's not the only one, but Gillick has done amazing things with your team; he realizes that it's not just stats that make a player.
As for Scott's comments, I disagree; the Mets have rarely been a place that players wanted to go to- Wagner was an unusual case, and a lot of his stuff was he reacted negatively to the Philly "fans".
As for the Mets, I think they will make a mistake in the Pen - they will commit too many years and money to someone. I didn't think Wagner was a mistake because he has a resume; K-rod looks to me like he was helped tremendously by his team.
Ollie will be offered arbitration. I think he will go elsewhere however.
Delgado will have his option picked up and be back for 1 year.
Varitek- old catchers are bad moves. They miss Jesus Flores in the system.
O-Dog may be a good pickup; I wonder what he'll cost though.
Eric Byrnes is over rated- but if you can get him for Castillo (as the Arizona Republic mentioned) that would be good.
I think there will be a few really surprising moves; like when they got Church (who I expect to return- don't listen to Fat-cessa)

http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/news;_ylt=AvMg2TApFHvdsJGtw.SfoPKyubYF?slug=ap-mets-minaya&prov=ap&type=lgns
NEW YORK (AP)—General manager Omar Minaya was given a new contract that runs through 2012, a deal that comes four days after the New York Mets were eliminated from postseason contention in the last game of the season.
The contract was announced Thursday and contains club options covering 2013 and 2014.
Minaya became general manager in 2004 and was signed to a five-year deal. The Mets made it to Game 7 of the NL championship series in 2006. The next two years they missed out on the playoffs on the last day of the regular season.
“We failed this year, and we want to get the redemption that we need and move forward,” Mets chief operating officer Jeff Wilpon said. “We obviously were not a very good team when Omar came aboard, and he’s turned this thing around, and we think he deserves another chance to keep getting us to where we want to be.”
Minaya understands some fans blame him for the Mets’ collapses the past two seasons.

I loved Bobby V; not only got most out of team, but was absolutely a great help with the 9-11 supplies, and always took time to sign autographs, etc for fans. Having said that, it was time for him to go then, and I don't know if it would have been good move to bring him back. If Manuel didn't do what seemed to be a good job, maybe.
Now that Manuel is returning (http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/8638042/Sources:-Mets-near-new-deal-with-skipper-Manuel) and it seems to be 2 years (which is good), I wonder if his burning out the bullpen was his style or desperation.

gee... you must be just so bored with your own life.
Bored? Nonsense. The Mets' annual collapse is but one the many events that enrich life, like the return of the swallows to Capastrano, like autumnal foliage of the Northeast, like the gifts under the tree of a Christmas morn...
The Mets' annual collapse is to be anticipated, savored, written about in short stories by Charles Dickens, celebrated upon its arrival. There is always a slight letdown when it is over, but there's always next year to think about. There are rituals developing around its beginning: on the 145th game of the year (17 left in the season), children should submit their Mets collapse list to their parents to mail to Uncle Omar, the patron (although the holiday is getting so commercial now, sometimes it starts at the All-Star break, but the traditionalists will hold out until the 145th game). Mr. Met will let kids sit on his lap and tell him how good they've been.
Hallmark will begin its Mets Collapse line of cards. People will adorn their homes in Blue, Orange, and Black (to symbolize the collapse). Mets Collapse Carolers will sing their hymns of the season door to door.
A collapse can happen to anyone (see the Phillies, 1964.) But for it to happen in successive years, it becomes elevated to ritual that we can build memories around and pass traditions down from generation to generation.
So no, I am not bored with my own life to celebrate such an event. My life is enriched by it.

i never wanted to see the mets trade jacobs but we got delgado and he's meant a lot to our success
I liked the job Manuel did,
Manuel saved what would have been a midseason collapse to another end of season collapse. And it wasn't him,
You all understand that you're talking about the same team that was picked by everyone... EVERYONE... To be in the World Series this year?
How are you happy with or see any success in any aspect of this season?

Not exactly.
ESPN Pre-Season Predictions (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/preview08/news/story?page=08expertpicks)
Only 6 out of 19 picked the Mets to make the World Series from ESPN. Only 1 picked them to win. 4 of them predicted the Mets wouldn't even make the playoffs.
Yes, they did collapse, but let's not make it seem like they were some mortal lock going into the season. I seem to remember a shitload of Cubs v. Tiger/Red Sox predictions for the World Series before the season. Who's season was worse, the Mets, who came back from under .500 to be in the race or the Tigers, who were out of the race after the first week?

???
The Cubs were picked by most to win their division, but very few picks for them to make or win the WS...apparently very wisely chosen.

im tired for people saying we collapsed again. Last year, yes. but this year wasn't. we just lost. there was no 8 game lead with 17 to play. it went back and forth almost down the to final few games.

it was a mini collapse ... mostly due to an inadequate bullpen

So far we got:
Tatis back for another year.
Easley and Perez have filed for Free Agency
Delgado's option has been picked up.
Let's go get Garland and Holliday!

Sources: Mets enter bidding for CC Sabathia
The latest Subway Series tussle could be over none other than CC Sabathia, the Daily News has learned, as the Mets Thursday apparently joined the Yankees in pursuit of baseball's biggest free agent prize. A high-placed Yankee source Thursday reacted to the development by saying: "The Mets are in it? Great. Bring it on." The Yankees are plotting a quick-strike offer to Sabathia that would meet or exceed the $137.5 million for six years that Johan Santana received from the Mets last winter
