So in the echo of last night's festivities at Yankee Stadium, I'm curious to see who among us is going to Shea's swan song this Sunday. I'll be there, bright and early, grilling and drinking "soda" out of Red Solo cups.

They break your balls about drinking beer around the stadium, too? They are incredibly big time pain in the asses at CitBank. We use Wendy's cups, and drink through straws.

I will be there, in my Loge section 12 seats as I am every sunday.

7 games to go and my fucking stomach is in knots. I want the division, no doubt, but I just want to get in. Anything can happen at that point and you'd have to play the Cubs eventually.
I conceded last Wednesday and shunned the team. After this weekend, I'm doing the same. I'll be watching a movie tonight cuz my health really can't take this.

Awesome. Although as these games go on it's getting more and more likely that it will be a somber occasion.
With only 7 games left there wasn't a sell out and there was a huge showing by Cubs fans so it was kind of sad.
And they were selling a limited edition "I was there for the last series" Mets/Marlins pin for $15. I'm sure I'll be able to get it at the Clubhouse store in 5 weeks for $3.

Cubs have taken Sabathia to the wood shed a couple times this year.
It's a tough game.
The Mets better have Santana on a 200+ pitch count. Just tell him right from the start he's in from beginning to end.

I agree...it is so bad that 20 of us could try out for the bullpen with at least 10 of us making it. That is how terrible this bullpen is. The question is, IF they do get to the post-season and they go to four man rotation, which starter goes to bullpen??

As bad as Pedro is, they'd have to stick with him and bump Niese just on experience.
But I'm not sure it'll matter...do any of you guys really think the Mets, if they get in, have a chance in hell of knocking off the Cubs?
They're probably going to have to throw Santana on the last day of the season just to get in, which means they'll only get him once in that five game series.
If they had him twice...yeah...I'd give the Mets a puncher's chance in that series. But, not if he only goes once.
Don't get me wrong, though...it would have to be huge for the psyche of the Mets fans just to get in and vanquish some of that bad taste of last year.

Yeah...it takes some higher genius to spend the Wilpons money on Pedro, Beltran, Santana, Delgado, and so forth.
Minaya's always been a fraud. He made his name but ravaging the Expos minor league system because the team was suppose to be contracted.
Anyone can deal their team's entire minor league system when they've been told their team is going to fold.
And most of what he's done in New York has cut giant checks.
Outside of that, he's only given up Bannister, Milledge, Matsui, Bell, and Lindstrom with almost nothing to show for it (unless you consider Church and Schneider 'something').
So while the team's better, it's almost entirely because the Mets will throw money at anybody. Minaya hasn't done a damn thing.

Ok lets go through the players Omar has given up.
Milledge - Yea in the long term he can be something but he wore out his welcome here. Church was having an All-Star year until he was injured so bite me. and Schnieder has worked wonders with the pitchers. He has helped Pelfrey in a huge way. catchers never hit anyways.
Bell - He just couldnt pitch here. Some guys can handle NY, some cant.
Matsui - Your Kidding me right?
Bannister - was awesome last year. Have u seen him pitch this season?
Only Lindstrom I will give u. But other then that, Omar has done more good then bad. How about Fernando Tatis? Great pick up, even though he is now done. He didnt mortgage the future at the deadline. Niese looks like a good pitcher and Murphy looks like a guy who will be with us for years.

if you say so... I think it is pretty stupid to think Omar is a bad GM You can't talk about his Expo days. the team was getting contracted and he had to try and win. that is why he made that deal MLB basically forced his hand. But why let facts get in the way of making your point right? remember they owned the team. He has done great things since he got here
Only guy bad he has dealt is Heath Bell and Maybe lindstrom. Bannister is fucking garbage.

I think you're a really knowledgable baseball fan, but this is a Phillies fan rant. The Mets went to game 7 of the NLCS 2 years ago, how is that not doing a damn thing?
And your list of guys he's given up is extremely unimpressive. Kaz Matsui? Are you kidding? The difference between Kaz Matsui and Damion Easley is like.. 10 hits. Milledge may turn out to be a decent player, however while debatable, but I'd rather have Church on this team than him. Throw in Schneider and that trade was at worst a wash for the Mets.
It looks like Lindstrom and Bell have developed into good relievers, and I'd say obviously Minaya's weakness is his judgement of relievers.
I'm not the biggest Minaya supporter, I think the collapse last year and the struggles this year are primarily his fault (though firing Willie turned out to be a brilliant move), but I think you're being a bit hard on him.
The Castillo signing was one of the worst contacts this team's ever given and I think he should have been more aggressive pre-trade deadline.

Omar has some boners in his time, but every general manager does. The bullpen sucks cock, but most guys there has some history of sucess previously.
The fact that guys like Tatis, Evans, Murphy, Figueroa, Stokes, Easley, Chavez, etc. have made ANY sort of contribution (however minor) over the past couple of years when they really had no right to shows that sometimes Omar sees things that we don't.

He gets nothing in those trades, unless he's outright buying players in the trade like Santana or Delgado (and even in the Delgado move, Jacobs actually turned out to be a pretty good player).
Regardless of what you thought of Bannister, or Matsui, or any of those other deals, they were commodities that he should have been able to at least get something useful back.
Furthermore, he never seems to get the better of any deals.
Look at Pat Gillick by comparison. Gillick has outright stolen players over the last three years.
They've shown an absolutely amazing stat on the Phillies broadcasts the last two nights that if Major League Baseball games were six innings long, the Mets would be 12.5 game up on the Phillies right now.
If they were eight innings long, they'd be 6.5 up on the Phillies right now.
How can anybody defend a guy who sees that happening to his team and does nothing?
The Phillies had the best bullpen in baseball and still found a guy like Scott Eyre off the scrapheap who's given the Phillies quality innings late in games in the last two months.
Omar just let it fall apart.
He's not a bad GM...but he's a vastly overrated one, in part because of the reputation he got in Montreal (which is incredibly undeserved).
He'll continue to lock the Mets into huge contracts over the next four years, and he'll do nothing if it doesn't come together as he planned.

Where did I say that?
All I said is it's easy to make that deal when your ownership allows you to take on a $125 million contract.
How many teams can say they can do that? Five?

It's about spending the money on the right players. Something Mets brass in the past has not done (see Bonilla, Mo Vaughn etc). Omar is spedning it on the right guys (except Luis Castillo). Could he have done a better job with the pen? sure.. but there aren't that many GMs out there I'd rather have

The one thing I would say is that there's probably not a lot of better GMs that will be available in the next year or two.
A guy like Gerry Hunsicker who built the good Astros teams is better, but outside of him, you're probably right.
But, still, where's the logic in extending a guy who's team could be a three or four games away fromt their second September collapse in as many years (and three in the loss column with eight to play does qualify as a collapse).
He has an extra year. At least make him work for his job.
For the record, though, I think they should bring back Jerry Manuel regardless of what happens. He's shown to be a pretty good manager. If they lose, it's not going to be because of him.

I agree the timing is shitty on supposed towasn't it. But it seems like someone leaked it and it happen.
and i also agree on Manuel. Team has played hard for him. He should keep the job
Bannister wouldn't be an upgrade over Niese or Pedro right now??.
no. have you looked at Bannister after the all star break?
at least Niese is 1 out of 3, and young.
Pedro has also been better; he's a #5 starter now who sucks the first inning, but at least he has gotten outs later. Bannister was a crap shoot trade- he was traded when they had Pelfrey, Humber, and kevin mulvey; they dealt him for a young guy who closed games. Yes, that reliever didn't work out, but it really was no loss.
Minaya isn't the best, but he isn't the worst either (he's no Steve Phillips)
By the way, who is gonna GM your team next year?

The Phillies had the best bullpen in baseball and still found a guy like Scott Eyre off the scrapheap who's given the Phillies quality innings late in games in the last two months.
Omar just let it fall apart.
He's not a bad GM...but he's a vastly overrated one, in part because of the reputation he got in Montreal (which is incredibly undeserved).
He'll continue to lock the Mets into huge contracts over the next four years, and he'll do nothing if it doesn't come together as he planned.
Bannister, as with most young pitchers was a crap shoot. I think overall it was a bad trade, but I wasn't crying about it when it happened so I can't cry about it now. I really have no idea what you think the Mets could have gotten for Matsui. I think of all the things you've said this is the one thing I REALLY disagree with.
I agree with you on the word "overrated", but not on "vastly". Is he one of the top 10 GM's in baseball? No. Is he one of the 10 worst GM's in baseball? No.

Good match up tonight.
Do the Cubs play it smart and put out a scrub team to target Perez' Achilles' heel of struggling against bad teams?
By the way, who is gonna GM your team next year?
80% chance it's Ruben Amaro Jr.
19% chance it's Mike Arbuckle.
1% chance the go out of house for someone
They'll most likely promote from within.
The only guy they might consider from the outside is Hunsicker because they've interviewed him before.
Amaro's basically split the GM duties in the last year anyway. Gillick still makes his recommendations on who they should target, but Amaro was directly responsible for the Lidge trade, and picking up Eyre a month ago.
Blanton might have been Gillick's move. Not sure.

It's not bad, but I'm not a big fan, either.
Craig Carton used to do radio at WIP in a Philadelphia off and on for a while. He's really hit or miss from show to show.

I spent $300 for the last game at shea back in May....if saturday's game gets rained out, would it be played as the second game of a day night double header on sunday, and if so, how much does that suck for me?

Let me guess...that was followed by a rant of how they'll win the division...followed by a rant of how much he hates the Phillies....followed by a rant of how much he hates Philadelphia (he did the exact opposite gimmick when he used to work down here).

he wasn't that different on Sports Guys on WNEW.
To be fair I've always said the Phillies were better this year than last year; If they swept the Nats and Mets swept the Fish I'd have no bitches.
I'm too lazy to look for a Brewers thread, so Epo will have to look here:
JJ Hardy parties hearty!!:drunk:
SS Hardy might have hand injury (http://blogs.jsonline.com/brewers/archive/2008/09/26/hardy-might-have-hand-injury.aspx)
Mets line up greats for Shea finale. (http://newyork.mets.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20080926&content_id=3553448&vkey=news_nym&fext=.jsp&c_id=nym)
Coincidentally, Rikers had a record intake of posted bail this week.
not a good start.
People who were pumped over Pelfrey pitching forgot hes 0-3 vs Fish.
Mets AGAIN left the bases loaded without scoring.

all this proves is just how bad our fucking bullpen has been

I honestly don't know what to say anymore. The minute I saw 36 people in the stands, I just knew this game was lost. Its sad that I have watched the entire game, and I forgot that David Wright was on the team. What the fuck is with the offense

oh i know so you can throw out the 6 inning one
but the 9th inning meltdowns hurt the most
if the mets even had half of those six we'd be up 2 games going into tonights game
