Gotta tip your hand to Myers yesterday.
Team needs to hit Moyer like last time, just not impode in the pen like last time.

I'm going to the night game tomorrow; I am concerned about the chaos trying to park for that.

no comments on Mike Schmidt's email?
The Mets know you're better than they are. They remember last year. You guys are never out of a game.

what most Phils fans don't get is last year was about the Mets losing it, not the Phils winning it. As long as the Mets continue to play good baseball (especially on defense), they will win this thing.

this series is the tell tale sign of our season

The Nats are inferior, but playing gr8 baseball, plus they have players who felt dissed by the Mets. The Nats will be trying their hardest to win

They need to win 9 of the next 12 at the very least before that Cubs series.

And 11-7 against the Phillies this year and it probably should have been closer to like 14-4.

That 6 game swing will most likely be the difference between the two teams this year

will the mets go after k -rod ??

He's going to get an outrageous contract.

While the Mets do give those out, they may want to take a pass.

Fuentes isn't a bad option, but the Mets would probably get more value shopping for a lockdown 8th inning guy, who can step in when Wagner makes his inevitable trips to the DL next season.

Someone like Jon Rauch....or maybe taking a shot on rehabbing Chad Cordero who will be non-tendered, with the goal of him being an 8th inning guy who can fill in.

Wags is gone for good, then.

He said he was retiring after '09.

The more I think about it, the more I think they'll make a run at K-Rod.
a) he's Latino.
b) I don't think the Mets are going to make a run at any A-list starters, and while they MAY make a run at a Manny or Burrell in LF, I doubt they'll really make a serious one.

So, K-Rod may be the big splash move, heading into the new park.

Jason Isringhausen (36)- didn't we have him already?
Todd Jones (41)- c'mon. Todd Jones?
Brandon Lyon (29)-how is he still in the league?
Francisco Rodriguez (27)-no,no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no
Salomon Torres (37) - isn't about time for this guy to retire, again?
Kerry Wood (32)- throw in Mark Prior while we're at it

Here's who's available: Any pitcher who can't make it as a starter. Relief pitchers suck. If your name isn't Mariano Rivera you're just another 1 inning pitcher with only 2 pitches. Let's give Kunz a shot.

I don't see Manny or Burrell. If Church is back and solid, LF can be filled with Evans/Murphy/F-Mart, etc.

They will need to spend on one starter- either re-signing Ollie or getting his replacement.

as BeerBandit said, relievers suck. Outside of a precious few (Mariano, Nathan, Hoffman to a degree) relievers aren't good long term investments. Who were big relievers a few years ago? Gagne, Cordero, Hudson Street, Turnbow...
Lidge bounced back, but he was awful with 'Stros at the end.

I look at closers like Running Backs ... I don't want my team to sign someone who's been the feature back of a team for 4 years, they ran him like a horse through the playoffs a couple years ... some team will get high looking at his 1,800 yards from the previous season, sign him for a monster contract, and act suprised when he appears to have lost a step or two. Occasionally you get someone who can put together 10-14 years worth of consistent results, but thats so rare compared to the norm. No K-Rod thank you.

An interesting note from Gammons: "David Wright has come up with more runners on base and more runners on third than any player in the National League."

That's why his numbers feel kinda hollow. Hope the day off can get his head right, he can correct his swing and start going opposite field.

If it rains tonight, they cannot play a double header Wednesday. Gotta play it Thursday on the common off day, both teams staying east coast after. makes sense.

And Lannan scares me for some reason. He really impressed my in the beginning of the year and I've kept my eye on him hoping that he wouldn't pitch against us in a big spot cuz I think he's pretty good. 3.88 era should have more wins than he does. Hope they can get him early.

Heres an question to ponder. Lets say Maine does come back and goes in the pen. lets say he does great. Next season, is he a starter or reliever? I hope its the former. I mean, I feel we are weaker without Maine in the rotation. Yes he has high pitch counts but when hes on, he can be this teams #2 easily.

I just read the conversation on Closer's and I agree with the group consensus. The Closer is the riskiest position to fill in baseball. Honestly, I'd be happy if a team just plays the hot hand for their closer. I'm surprised you don't see more bullpen's by committee in baseball. If you have 2 or 3 really good relievers in a bullpen, I'd rather play match-up's than stick someone in a dogmatic closer role. Unless of course, you have Mariano Rivera on your team.

OMG. Not to act all girly, but do you guys know that show Loud Mouths? My email got on air!!! I was so stoked. My jaw dropped. I asked who would the Mets get for the rotation if Ollie Perez isn't re-signed. I said I didn't want Ben Sheets b/c of his injuries. Adam Schein agreed with me. He said the Mets should get C.C. Sabathia and put Heilmann in the rotation. Frank Isola agreed about Heilmann but said Mussina could be in the Mets rotation.

I may not agree with those picks but just getting my name and email on air was more then enough.

its a nice thought but we arent shelling out another 100million+ for a starter. rather give the 5 and 55 to Ollie. He can be a dominant lefty. only 26.

According to Scot Schoeneweis, Billy Wagner has already been told that the Mets won't pick up his $8 million option for 2010.
That's what Wagner told Schoeneweis yesterday, and it fits in with Wagner saying he's already thrown his last pitch as a Met. This whole situation has been pretty odd from the get go, with practically everyone already assuming that Wagner is going to miss all of 2009. We've seen veteran relievers make it back from Tommy John surgery after 9-10 months. If Wagner isn't even going to try to return before the end of the season, then one could argue that he'd be in violation of his contract.

Reyes hasn't had a good September so far, but Delgado, Beltran, Wright, Tatis and Murphy have been making up the difference

Its going to come down to the bullpen to decide if we are the division champs or the wild card.

We still have 2 games up in the loss column, although we have two games in hand (we make one of them up tonight, the other on Sept. 25.)

The next 7 games are huge...We need at least 5 wins...Hopefully the Cubs will have their division wrapped up in this next week and we wont be playing their "A" Team.

The last series with the Marlins looms huge...We're going to have Pelfrey, Santana and Perez to finish the year.

I'm confident.

I've been saying it for a while; it's not as much the bullpen, it's the offense not living to what they should be.

As an atlanta fan with a wasted season, I can at least take solace in the fact that since the mets lost or tied another season series with the braves will most likely fuck up the mets year. Now, if they could just sweep them this weekend the year will have some amount of success to it.

you guys could have at least TRIED vs the Phils, damn you.

when he hit that homerun, i remember thinking, "that guy just threw away a lot of money" when the fan that caught the homer threw it back onto the field. i'm sure some <strike>idiot</strike> collector would've paid decent money for it. i wonder what happened to that ball?

I found it very strange rooting for the braves the last couple of days, especially hampton tonight. I was also rooting for the yankees since I want the twins to win the central. This has been a rather odd couple of days of baseball.

the Mets have the same record as last year (pretty much) so far; its the Phils that have played better.

Last year the Phils played loosey goosey and won it. This year they will have more pressure, although we won't have any Rockie-type team coming out of no where for wild card.

Phils/Mets/Brewers. 2 in, 1 home.

I had my doubts in that 7th inn when Atl tied it.

I think Murphy will be with the team, but I don't know if he will be full time.
He will probably platoon in left to start. The winter ball 2b thing is to see if he can become a utility guy at least. He was an ok 3b in minors, but Wright has him blocked there. I don't know if they want him to be full time second baseman; I heard mets will go after Orlando Hudson. They DO like Murphy though.

Maybe Stokes can give us more good innings than bad also.

there was a report they were highly considering making Murphy a 2B in the offseason and are going to shop Castillo. yeah it was the post, but hopefully it will come true.

If not, Murph can play LF. Fernando won't be ready yet. this kid can hit behind reyes for a long time if what we are seeing is really what he can provide

yeah, as was said, Murphy did start to play 2b at AA, but only got 15 games in; that is why they are sending him to Arizona to play it this winter. I still don't think they envision him as #1 choice there, but it is about flexibility. After all their top prospect now (Wilmer Flores) is a SS, as is last year's pick Reese Havens.

Interesting little article on Shea.

Agreed. Those Cubs players aren't going to sit around for a week.

Pinella may be a bit more generous with giving guys with nagging injuries a day off here and there, but for the most part, the Mets will get most of the Cubs' strength.

Exactly. Sure they aren't going to do something silly like run a suicide squeeze...but they are still gonna show up and play. The real advantage is that the Cubs will be re-aligning their rotation for the playoffs.

Mind you, Milwaukee could be the major beneficiaries of such a realignment as they play the Cubs on Friday, Saturday, Sunday.

And don't forget Dan Uggla has promised a bloodbath that final series of the season between the Mets and Marlins.

Whether Florida hangs in or not, they're coming to play.

If Milwaukee can just sustain a little bit, they've got a shot.

Odds are still in the Mets' favor, but Milwaukee has some life.

Final Week Pitching Probables:

Chicago Cubs (Jason Marquis 10-9, 4.39) vs. New York Mets (Jonathan Niese 1-0, 4.09)
Chicago Cubs (Rich Harden 10-2, 2.03) vs. New York Mets (Johan Santana 14-7, 2.65)
Chicago Cubs (Carlos Zambrano 14-6, 3.77) vs. New York Mets (Oliver Perez 10-7, 4.10)
Chicago Cubs (Ted Lilly 16-9, 4.17) vs. New York Mets (Pedro Martinez 5-6, 5.50)
Florida Marlins (Chris Volstad 5-3, 3.07) vs. New York Mets (Mike Pelfrey 13-10, 3.67)
Florida Marlins (Ricky Nolasco 15-7, 3.52) vs. New York Mets (Jonathan Niese 1-0, 4.09)
Florida Marlins (Scott Olsen 8-10, 4.20) vs. New York Mets (Johan Santana 14-7, 2.65)

First off, I would be shocked if Niese makes two starts. I imagine the Mets will bump Santana up on three days rest to face Volstad if they need the game, and then throw Perez vs. Olsen the last day of the season, also on three days rest.

It also would not surprise me, if that last game of the season actually means something to the Marlins, if they bump Scott Olsen the last day of the season for Josh Johnson.

Now, looking at if objectively, I'd say the Mets will go anywhere from splitting with Chicago, to losing three of four, although, Zambrano and Harden will be on strict pitch counts so that plays to the Mets favor.

They should, on paper, take at least two of three from Florida.

So let's say 4-3 on paper, but tack on one loss of a game the Mets should win, but the bullpen blows, and I"ll say they go 3-4 down the stretch, meaning the Brewers would have to go 5-1 to force a playoff.

The odds would favor the Mets holding on to win the Wild Card
