Have you seen Perez lately? or should i say, when Peterson was fired. Hes been the most consistent starter on the team.

NickyL0885
08-16-2008, 04:23 PM
They want Maine in the pen b/c he has a sore rotator cuff. So, they feel pitching one inning as opposed to 6-7 every 5 days will be less stress. If they do it, i hope its just for the year. With Pedro gone at years end and no idea is Perez will re-sign, you need Maine in the rotation with Santana and Pelfrey alone with Niese and whomever else for next season.

BeerBandit
08-16-2008, 04:29 PM
You want your closer, or any reliever for that matter, to throw strikes. The guy with the best control is Pedro. If Kunz isn't going to get the chance, I want to see Pedro close. He can't go more than 5 innings anyway, perhaps 1 inning at a time is better. Plus his stuff is still filthy.

wagner out indefinitely

foodcourtdruide
08-20-2008, 05:28 AM
Wow, Wagner being out indefinitely (whatever the fuck that means) is huge. They really need to improve the bullpen and need some kind of closer. I think Minaya actually did the right thing by not pushing the panic button and overpaying for an average middle reliever. I wonder what they'll do now though. It would be crazy if one of the starters went to the bullpen, but I can totally see that happening.

PD
08-20-2008, 08:45 AM
Braves pen REALLY sucks.

Wagner of course is a quote machine; besides the other quotes (about how much relievers get criticized) he also said "I was a closer because I Sucked as a starter"

Wagner out is really gonna be a problem.
It looks like the mistake Mets made last off season was allowing Lidge to go to Philly.

Actually, if you want some good news for both our teams, the Mets are only two behind the Brewers in the loss column and the Phils are just three.

The Mets have three vs. Milwaukee left...the Phils have four.

Both teams essentially have two shots at it, between now and the end of September...one against each other with their five games head to head, and one against the Brew Crew.

It looked like no shot the NL East could get two this year...it's at least a possibility, with how well both teams are playing.

Let's face it though.

Whoever it is in the NL going to the World Series is going to get an ass whooping. Most of the teams over there with 60-65 wins are 10 games outside of first in their respective divisions. In the NL, that makes you a division leader or a wildcard contender.

The AL is a machine this year. We're going to get killed, no matter who gets through the NL playoffs.

I still don't know what he's talking about-but he got booed, and that's a shame. He's trying to rally the team/fans going into the final stretch, and his "criticism" of the fanbase in Philly is rather tame compared to what other star players have said about us.

He was right about one thing-when the Phillies are good we love them, when they suck (e.g., getting SWEPT by the Dodgers) we boo and complain. But at least we're not pussies like Cardinal fans, who actually cheer for the other team's players in some secret wish that would help the team sign whoever the player is.

Booing a team that stinks up a field when they should be 5 games in first place is not only a right, it's the law in Philadelphia.

There really is no team I'm not confident we can't beat in a series

The Phillies have no pitching, and once Brett Myers faces a real team he'll go back to sucking. Plus we're going to bury them with that 2 game series.

Same goes for Sabathia. He's blowing his arm out to complete game Pittsburgh and SF.

I thought the Angels were a totally complete team but after watching their total meltdown against the Yanks a few weeks ago I can see even they are vulnerable. K-Rod is going to have 60 saves sure, but his WHIP and K/BB is awful for a closer and Vladdy disappears in the playoffs more then almost any other player I can think of.

Tampa doesnt have the starters or the experience. Its a great story, but they are going in and out quick.

The only team that scares me against the Mets is the Mets. No one is going to have a better starting staff in the playoffs. We're just going to hope the bullpen doesnt melt down.

I'm just hoping we can catch Chicago so we can get the easy walkover of whatever shit team comes out of the west.

Yeah I know Mets fans love to complain about Billy (and I'm absolutely in there), but numbers never lie

Wagner:

10 BB
52 K
2.30 ERA
179 ERA+
0.89 WHIP

K-Rod:

29 BB
57 K
2.75 ERA
156 ERA+
1.28 WHIP

1.28 WHIP = AWFUL

Rivera is at 0.75, Kuo is at 0.89, Nathan at 0.91 for example

The AL this year are like the WWII Germans, and the NL is gonna look like 1939 Poland once they get through with us.

As I said before fans, in general, in New York, Boston, Philadelphia, are generally WAY too reactionary.

True, oh so true. When I go to a game, I don't wanna go there to boo my players. I'm there to cheer them on and wish cancer on the other team. There may be players on other teams I'd like to see on the Phillies roster, but until they sign with us, they are the enemy and must be destroyed.

Are you talkin through a timewarp? Outside of the Rays, Angels and Red Sox, the AL is mostly shitty this year. Both leagues have like 4-5 good teams and the rest garbage.

No shit, that's what I mean. The NL is going to face one of those three teams. And they will destroy us.

No shit, that's what I mean. The NL is going to face one of those three teams. And they will destroy us.

The Rays are young and getting hit by injuries. The Red Sox are getting old, run hot ad cold and have trouble on the road. The Angels are playing WAY above their pythag for the year. They're very good, but they're essentially the 2008 version of the 2007 Diamondbacks and aren't as good as their record (inflated by arguably the second weakest division in all of baseball). The White Sox live and die by the long ball.

The AL clearly has good teams, but the NL actually has the teams that can match up to all of those AL teams. This is nothing like years we've seen recently where the AL has 1 or more teams so clearly leaps ad bounds better than the NL.

Top that off with the short series being a crapshoot and there's no reason to crown the AL at this point.

You do realize that for the course of his entire career he's been a 2nd half pitcher.

Career first half: 50-33 3.50

Career second half: 50-17 2.79

I know, its just stats. They are silly.

He does not have NEAR the stuff that he had when he had those 2nd halves. He threw 96 97 back then, Now he is lucky if he reaches 93 94.

Known as a great second-half pitcher while with the Twins, Santana is 4-0 with a 2.20 ERA in eight starts since the All-Star break and is having a Cy Young-caliber first season in New York despite the low win total.

Castillo taking one for the team

Luis Castillo told the Mets he needs a few more days before bing activated from the disabled list today.

Interesting, in that the rule stipulates he must be activated now that his 20-day rehab allotment has expired, unless, of course, he states that he needs more time - in which case the Mets can keep him on the disabled list.

So, I wonder if, for the good of the team, knowing a player like Argenis Reyes would likely have been demoted to clear room, Castillo chose to stay on rehab.

John Maine admitted after Saturday night's game that he'll need offseason arthroscopic surgery on his right shoulder.
There has been speculation for some time now that there was something physically wrong with Maine. Turns out it's a painful bone spur in his throwing shoulder. He let up a season-high eight earned runs on Saturday but will continue to pitch through the pain this season.

Jerry Manuel said the Mets might shut down John Maine for the rest of the season if he doesn't look strong during a throwing session next week.
Maine has a bone spur in his shoulder, but said after Saturday's start that he planned on pitching through the pain. Management should make the call by Wednesday.

Have you seen that bullpen???

Then you'd understand why...

The odd thing about it, though, is that they've essentially had a lot of the same guys the last couple years. It's just that Heilman fell off a cliff, Feliciano's shown he's best suited as a specialist, and Sanchez has never really been as strong as he was before his accident.

I always liked Joe Smith, though...what's his deal? Do they just not have confidence in him to use him in the clutch yet, or has he been getting lit up lately as well?

very much on.
Smith gets exposed vs lefties. Feliciano last year was able to get out righties, and heilman lefties; this year they can't, and Feliciano's 2 hrs today were inexcusable.

The other real problem is the Met hitters stop hitting after the 4th inn;
they have scored about 140 runs and given up 190 from innings 7-9 (even though they are the opposite for innings 1-3).

Pedro was ok in his only other start vs. the Phillies, but even if he's good, he'll go six at most.

Three innings against the Met bullpen should be more than enough.

Wednesday's the tough one with Santana vs. Kendrick. Unless Santana just doesn't have it, Kyle's probably going to have to pitch one of his best games of the season.

Not the last 2 starts, 7 and 7+.

Whether or not the Phillies actually hit Pedro tomorrow, or they strike out 10 times, they are a team that sees a lot pitches.

Unless he's just ridiculously overpowering, which isn't really his game anymore, they'll make him work for it.

He may keep them off the board through five, but I'd be surprised, to say the least, if he's not pushing 90 pitches after the fifth.

I imagine Game 1 goes tight into the 6th and 7th and it comes down to bullpens...Phils should have the advantage there.
