How much longer have I been on this board?
We all talk back and forth....and quite frankly I read them all.
I'll talk O's, Cubs...I think Epo's Brewers thread didn't make it past post #5, but I'd of been in on that too.

Man, that Wright home run would have looked nice if Reyes hadn't got picked off last inning...
D'oh.
Reyes wouda fucked it up by not touching home because he would be too busy celabratng, thus negating the entire hr.
Don't know if that possible but i ran with it..

I agree with Towelie about everything. Hes right. Jeter is mediocre. Reyes will prob go on to have a better career. Just like the players just voted, hes the most overrated player. yankee fans brag about his 4 rings. What has he done lately? EXACTLY! no rings at all. he isnt even the best SS on his own team. Face it, A-Rod should be at short with Jeter at 2B.

I never said Jeter was a mediocre player, just a mediocre fielder.
He's been a hitting machine his entire career, but he's getting old and fast.

Yea, and Reyes has been racking up those rings.
And everyone who saw that said the exact same thing.
Jealousy, pure and simple jealousy. Even Gammons who is the ultimate Redsox Homer said it.
Reyes is Louis Castillo, nothing more nothing less.

all true, but the argument is moot being as Jeter is 9 years older. Arod is WAY to big to play short stop not. He could never cover that ground. Jeter has lost his range and isnt what he was, but for us Met fans to sit here and say he isnt any good anymore is crazy talk. And again. I FUCKING HATE JETER. He isn't a top 5 fielding short stop, but Reyes has like 30 errors this year. How can we trash anyones SS

Jeter is currently an average fielder, but he's easily a first ballot hall of famer. I think he's gotten worse fielding as he's gotten older, but I don't have any stats to back me up, I'm just basing that on the handful of Yankees games I watch each year.
I think if I could have Jeter or Reyes for this year, I'd pick Jeter, however if I was drafting a team I'd pick Reyes because of his age. I think that's a no brainer.
Kevin

Check that, i just checked Castillos stats, thought they were better than that. Reyes is much better. But Its not like Reyes avg 20+hrs either.

So you're fine with taking the guy with a lower BA, a lower SLG, a lower OBP, less hits, less runs, less walks, less homers, less doubles, less triples and less stolen bases?
Ah.

Here is the thing. No matter what the fuck the stats are, this is what means something to me. Jeter is the captain and even though he bailed on Arod you never have to worry about him giving up on the season because the manager sat him. Just like Rollins did earlier this month, you get benched you suck it up and move on. Reyes is a baby and can not be trusted to lead this team or be there when it gets tough.

One of Manuel's key points coming inning was trying to have strictly defined roles for these guys.
Looks like he's setting up the pen as if the Mets will get the ball to Wagner with a lead.
Anything more then a 1 run lead, he'd probably be out there again

Bro, I rooted for a Phillies sweep as well, but you can't use that argument when the Mets gave up a 7 game lead and didn't even get a chance to play in the post season. I am all for beefing up the Mets, but this is craziness. The Mets tanked, what is there to be cocky about

No bragging. But KC talks about the collapse as if it lead to some miracle Philadelphia sports resurgence.
They played 3 more games.
Would we have won the WS if we got in? Probably not. But we certainly wouldnt have gotten wrecked like Philly did.
I'd rather have the collapse then lose to Boston in the WS, which probably would have been the case.

Santana Allows vs Mets Score:
1 ER, Mets score 2 (L)
4 ER, Mets score 1 (L)
0 ER, Mets score 4 (ND - lose 5-4, all runs after Santana leaves)
1 ER, Mets score 1 (L)
1 ER, Mets score 6 (W)
3 ER, Mets score 5 (W)
3 ER, Mets score 2 (L)
4 ER, Mets score 6 (W)
3 ER, Mets score 12 (W)
1 ER, Mets score 5 (ND)
2 ER, Mets score 5 (ND)
3 ER, Mets score 7 (W)
3 ER, Mets score 6 (W)
4 ER, Mets score 3 (L)
1 ER, Mets score 1 (L)
2 ER, Mets score 7 (W)
We're 9-7 when he pitches. In the seven losses, we've scored: 2, 1, 4, 1, 2, 3, and 1 runs.
When we score 4+ runs in a Santana start, we are 9-1
When we score 3- runs in a Santana start, we are 0-6

The Santana show is not impressing me this year, but I said the same thing about Beltran and he rebounded well in his second and third year with the club. No, my mistake... I had moved on to Kasmir (stupid me!)... Bannister is still very solid with a 1.29 WHIP on a bad team. ERAs can be deceiving based on bad field play and poor relievers backing up the starter. WHIP is a much more telling stat. I'd rather have Bannister than Pelfrey, Perez and, sorry to say, Pedro at this point... Kasmir is a no-brainer! that was a disaster of a deal. Imagine this as our starting rotation: Santana, Maine, Pedro, Kasmir, Bannnister... Not too bad!

If we don't trade Kazmir theres probably a 99.9 percent chance we don't have Pedro, Beltran or Santana
And Bannister sucks. He's a junkballer who barely throws strikes. He was awful when he was here and was buried in a logjam of pitchers.
Besides his first 3 starts he's been 4-6, with a 5.45 ERA, and nearly an .800 OPS against him.

Zambrano and Bartolome Fortunato got us Beltran, Pedro and Santana?... How do you figure?!... Oh, wait... Stupid me!... You're saying that Phillips' bad moves got us Minaya, which got us those players... Which has gotten the Mets where?... As far as Bannister... Check his game-by-game stats with Perez... It's very hard to disagree. Most closers put their fan's hearts in their throats. It's because they generally throw heat. A major league hitter can hit a straight fastball with his eyes closed. When A-Rod hit that pitch I thought it was gone. I guess, for better or worse, you gotta consider Wagner one of best closers after Mariano and Papelbon... Scary!

why is it when Reyes throws his glove its childish, but when Paul O'Neill broke a bat because he didn't do what he expected it was manly?
as long as he's pissed at HIMSELF, I'm fine with it.
I was there today; It's worse that he actually made the error than got pissed.
Ollie was back to being good ollie- and kept his composure. Even the homer he gave up was fine- with a multi-run lead at least with no one on he challenged Betemit.
Oh and let us all not forget that even before the Mets in 2006, and Phillies "Wild Thing", we also had

Ollie pretty much said in not so many words during his post game interview that Peterson was the one that fucked him up. He mentioned that he was allowed to pitch the way he felt comfortable. I know one of the reasons talked about as to why Peterson was let go was that he didn't play to what his pitchers did well, but instead wanted them all to conform to his style.
Perez said something like "today that was the real Ollie." He was pitching from down on the side a bit, and his fastball was hitting 95 instead of 90.

God I hope that's true and not just bullshit rhetoric.
I think with Maine, New-Ollie, Pelfrey (who looks like he turned a corner), and Santana (who I think is pitching pretty well and has a lot of bad luck) we have a chance to put a run together. The pen looks like its falling into place a little as well.
And Church changes the entire complexion of the lineup. These next 2 weeks will make or break the season IMO. Phillies are floundering and we get a chance to pile on or have the '08 season written off. Somebody needs to step up and get a few clutch hits for fucks sake.
Towelie
06-30-2008, 04:23 AM
Theres really no gray area with Ollie.
Either you're going to get what you got today or you're going to get a quick and painful implosion.
With Church finally back, Alou on his way we're actually starting to look like a team again.
Can they win say 50 of the next 81? I don't know. But with the way the NL and the division are playing out, it may only take 45 more wins to get into the playoffs
Once again, I was not one who called for Willie/Jacket to be let go, but a few things I like already:
1) It was announced that starting with the Phillies, Manuel is changing the Rotation slightly to be Santana, Maine, and then Ollie. I'm old school - It never made sense to me to throw the 2 lefties back-to-back, especially when everyone agreed that Maine was at least as good (and probably better) than Ollie.
2) Delgado finally removed late in game for defense. Ok, I don't get why it was Tatis and not Andy Phillips, but its still a positive.
3) The Warthan philosophy of advising pitchers based on what they do, rather than your system. Jacket would probably be good for the Youngsters, but why change what works?
4) the magic "100 pitch limit" seems gone. They aren't going 130 yet, but at least the idea is to give starters more of a chance to go deeper
5) Warthan seems to be more likely let pitchers throw high fastballs- it's not where you want to live, but this staff needs to have that as an option;
6) Manuel giving more defined roles to the pen. This is related to #3; in theory I agree it shouldnt matter when relievers go in, but they all seem to want to have an idea of their role - and if it works, great.
Big games ahead- surprising St. Louis, and then the Phillies, who are struggling, but who are still in 1st place and love playing vs Mets.
Finally, think about it- who woulda thought at the beginning of the year we'd be waiting desperately for Church to play, and we'd dread Pedro starts?

It's shaping up to look like a pretty good series...not sure what games I have tickets for, but I have a couple of them.
I got an e-mail from the Phillies offering limited ticket availability, despite it supposedly being 'sold out,' but I think it's part of their "Tent Tailgate" promotion designed to milk an extra $100 per ticket out of anyone who REALLY wants to go, and can't figure out how to use StubHub.

Un-Fucking-Believable. 2-0 Redbirds already on the Ankiel 2Run Homer. Tony Armas stinks and i dont like him!
Fuck Ryne Sandberg...he's not fit to carry Carlos Baerga's spikes!!
Hmm... what organization traded away Ryne Sandberg????
Phillies GM Paul Owens then went back to his scouts, who told him Sandberg wouldn't be any more than a utility infielder. Sandberg was traded along with shortstop Larry Bowa to the Cubs for shortstop Ivan DeJesus prior to the 1982 season.
Hmm... what organization traded away Ryne Sandberg????
It was payback for fleecing St. Louis of Steve Carlton.
Can't win 'em all.
Actually that deal was 100% Dallas Green...when he left Philly for the Cubs, he was the only one in the organization that realized what Sandberg was and brought him to Chi-Town with him.
Can't win 'em all.
very true.
mets actually just pulled ahead 5-3 in 5th

Anything under a 10 spot from Tony Armas has to be viewed as a plus.
I don't care what his Triple-A numbers were...he has never been good.
In fact, I'm half-shocked he didn't go to throw a slider in the 1st and have his arm break off at the shoulder and launch six rows back into the stands at Busch.

Pelfery has really impressed me today. I was worried he'd give up a ton of hits/runs being staked to a big lead. He stuck to his game and kept the pitch count low, thus saving the bullpen for the Philly series... Good job Mike!
OK Johan, now it's your turn... Give us one of those million dollar games they paid you for (and the offense better score more than 2 runs against a triple-A pitcher as well!)...
...A very good win given the upcoming series... I just hope Wright is not going to miss the series, especially because of a stupid injury during a blowout.

If it was any other paper, I'd believe it more; the Post is getting worse and worse.
I do like the Mets announcers. SNY can use better filler programming, and the tech stuff is just ok, but Keith/Darling/Cohen with Harold reynolds (and even Maz) in studio is top notch.

Mets, Reyes thrown by criticism (http://www.newsday.com/sports/baseball/mets/ny-spminside0704,0,5672001.column)
It's much ado about nothing.
the glove incident is one example.
Did it look good? Of course not. Reyes realizes it was a mistake. But both he and Carlos Delgado found it ridiculous that some perceived Reyes to be showing up the first baseman after Delgado had the throw kick off the tip of his glove. The first thing Reyes did when he returned to the dugout was apologize to Delgado for not delivering the throw chest high. Delgado, in turn, told him, "My bad. I should have had that ball."
"I think it all got blown out of proportion," Delgado said. "It was pretty unfair. I think he is a great teammate. It's funny how sometimes we get criticized for not showing emotions and this is a kid who is upset that he made an error. And he got crushed for that, too. Sometimes you just can't win.
in the Willie days all we heard is this team has no emotion; and yet when Reyes shows emotion, he gets bashed.
Just win baby.
If it was any other paper, I'd believe it more; the Post is getting worse and worse.
Adam Rubin of NY Daily News (http://www.nydailynews.com/blogs/mets/2008/07/reyes-and-hernandez-clash-on-t.html) backs me up
The Mets acknowledge there was a verbal exchange between Keith Hernandez and Jose Reyes over the SNY analyst’s critical comments during Sunday night’s flight from New York to St. Louis. They suggest it was far from intense enough to have escalated to something physical. Players who have strolled through the dugout this afternoon in Philly weren’t even aware it had occurred.

And Santana gets little support once again... This is the telling sign for the '08 Mets. They're gonna have a real tough time going up against the good teams in the NL. They really don't have the horses to stand toe-to-toe with the likes of Philly and The Cubbies (Ronnie's two favorite teams ironically enough).
Buster Olney (a Towelie favorite) had an interesting stat on Baseball Tonight last night that I'm not quite sure what to make of it.
When Santana cracks the 60 pitch barrier, his BAA goes from .239 to .255, his Slugging Pct against goes from .340 to .463, and nine of the 14 home runs he's given up have come then.
Now, part of me wants to just say he's using statistics to illustrate one of the most obvious points anyone can make about ANY pitcher: the longer a guy throws, the more likely he is to wear down.
That said, it's not like 60 pitches is 100 pitches...60 pitches is the 4th, 5th, or 6th inning most nights.
Now obviously, all of this is moot if the Mets actually scored runs behind him...and it's not like those 60+ numbers are hideous.
But it's something to consider in terms of forecasting Santana. My experience is that most fans have a completely unrealistic expectation of the guy.

in a vacuum, I don't think much of that stat; ie- what are everyone else's splits? It's not uncommon to think the 2nd or 3rd time may favor the hitter.
Still bad trends for Mets- 0-7 with runners in scoring position, and once again, Phillies seem to have a team that feels like it's never out of it.

I don't know...the rains are just kind of holding steady around Philadelphia. Most likely it'll stop raining within the next hour.
The damage could be done on the field, making it unplayable, but Citizens Bank drains pretty well, and the grounds crew there usually does a pretty good job.
So I'd guess they'll resume around 6:45, 7 PM.

If the Yankees continued the game it is only because it was tied, or the team that had the lead took the lead in the same inning the rain delay started. Since this is an official game and the Mets scored their run before the 8th inning, it would be a Mets win if called.

I doubt they would call a game when the home team was batting with runners on, i think the home team had to have finish that innng.
Looking at the radar, the rain should stop within the next half hour.
We'll see where they go from there. They won't call the game until they at least take the tarp off and assess the field.
If I had to guess, we're playing.
