View Full Version : The Cubs are about to make history!

Going into Monday with a week of baseball left, the Cubs had a 3.5 lead in the NL Central. No team had been able to come back and win a divison being down by more than 3 games in the final week of the regular season since 1962. Well, with the Cubs about to give up their 9th straight loss to the Marlins (stretching back to last year) and the Brewers inevitably about to finish up a sweep of the Cardinals, the Brew Crew will just be 1 game back with 4 to go. I think it's a safe bet that the tone for this year's insane Cubs collapse has been set, so let's sit back and enjoy the hijinx!

I don't mean to sound ignorant, but I haven't followed the NL race too closely this year...
What your saying is that the Cubs had a 3.5 game lead and are now at risk of blowing it?
What about the Wild Card? Will they be pushed into there or is in first or nothing?
I've cheered for the Cubbies in the years past but with work and life in the way I haven't payed much attention this year....
Hopefully Sandberg and Sosa will pitch in with some clutch hitting down the stretch here and that flashy rookie (Maddux??) pitcher will get them into the post season. I guess it all comes down to timely moves by Don Baylor, the manager is so important this time of year.

Well the brewers are down in the bottom of the 7th so you may keep the lead at 2
I will have to say that as a White Sox fans nothing gives me greater joy than to see cubs fans get their hopes up only to have them crushed in glorious fashion.

First or nothing. The NL Central is so bad that our 2nd place team isn't even close in the WC race.
This is the first playoff possible year that I have basically detached myself emotionally ahead of time. It hurts, of course, but I not getting worked up like I did in 2004, 2003 or 1989. I'll believe anything after it happens.

Tell me about it.
Cubs collapse in spectacular fashion in 2003, and the team they lose to wins it all. Next year, they flame out at the end again and the Red Sox win it, the team with the second longest WS drought. Next year, the White Sox win it, the hated rivals across team and the team with the third longest WS drought. Then the year after that, the OTHER biggest rivals, the Cardinals, win it with one of the worst season recors of a WS winner ever. What's next? The Mets steal Santo's fake legs to hit WS-winning HR's this year?

DON'T COUNT ON ANYTHING YET.
2 game lead...3 games to go. Disaster is still easily achieved.
The Reds have been trouble for the Cubs for years now...though both Griffey and Dunn are out, and Harang is rumored to miss his spot, too. The Cubs have Zambrano, Hill and Lilly going...honestly, if they fuck this up at this point, they deserve to not go.
And sweet Christ, they've lost 10 games in a row to the fucking Marlins. I hate that goddamn team and their retarded stadium so much. And the Diamondbacks own the Cubs, too. I think they kinda suck against the Rockies...I have no idea what they've done against the Devil Rays, if anything...I guess if you're a bullshit expansion team from the last decade or so, you can pretty much dickslap the Cubs any time you want.

3-4 vs. the Phillies.

However...you can leave your opinion of Ned Yost at the door as I have no time for it. If you give a manager an incomplete ballclub...expect incomplete results. (I.e. the bullpen) He has got the ok from the owner and the GM for 2008 which makes me happy. Trust me...I think Ned is the man to move the kids forward from this point forward.

A-Rod rumor squelched, yet again (http://chicagosports.chicagotribune.com/sports/baseball/cubs/cs-070925cubsbits,1,1524877.story?coll=cs-cubs-headlines)
A-Rod rumor squelched
Cubs President John McDonough shot down the latest unsourced rumor out of New York that Alex Rodriguez already was planning to exercise his escape clause and sign a 10-year, $300 million deal with the Cubs that included a future ownership stake.
"Outrageous, and obviously not true," McDonough said.
The story said Rodriguez's agent, Scott Boras, was negotiating with the next owner of the Cubs. So who would that be?
"If you find that out, let me know," McDonough said with a laugh.
Thats the part that makes them a longshot in the A-Rod opt out. Of the rumored suitors, the Cubs would make as much or more sense than anyone to get him. But with their unsettled ownership situation, I can't see Boras banking on a situation that is unknown. Boras has to make a decision in early November, and the Cub ownership situation won't be settled until January at the earliest.

I don't really have an opinion on Ned Yost one way or the other. But, I agree, if the Brewers add a couple of good bullpen arms next year, they'll probably run away with the division, especially if Sheets can stay healthy all year.

I don't know, Yost up until the end continued to make deicisons and moves that completely baffled me and often cost you guys tight games. He was doing stuff that a manager should have figured out after the first month or so, like he was still feeling out his team in freakin' September. Personally, I hope you guys keep him if he's going to keep doing stuff like that, because you do have a very dangerous and promising team that's gonna compete for years to come...I just also sympathize because I know the pains of having a terrible manager all too well.

I agree that the timing is pretty critical in all of this, though I doubt ARod opting out hinges completely on the Cubs...there are other teams that could pay him. Not many, but he has options. And all of these sides denying things really doesn't prove much any way...why would any of them admit to what's going on if they are "negotiating?" Canning or Cuban's group could very easily be talking to Boras behind the scenes and McDonough would have no idea.

One more point...yes, I know they won in a shitty division, but the Cubs really did put on a show to win it. They were HORRIBLE in April and May and ended up in a big hole...at one point 9 under .500 and almost 10 games back of the Brewers...but from June 2nd until today, besides the mashing Yankees, the Cubs do have the best record in all of baseball. That's some serious and sustained winning they've done for almost 4 months.
