Well boys, and Gwen, here we go again and it's about fucking time!!

Great news about the schedule change posted in the off-season thread by Manny has this year starting off on the right foot. I used to hit every Avalanche game in the tri-state area until they fucked it all up. The good news is the unbalanced/boring/unfair schedule dies with this year. Unfortunately I pretty much hate just about every jersey now. The only ones I don't hate are those left alone.

Take a look: http://forums.smirkinchicken.com/thread.php?threadid=59233&forumid=1

So, here's a great rundown on the West and I'm sure someone else will cover the east soon enough. Just go to NHL.com or TSN.ca for a great hockey fix as we await the first games this Saturday and Sunday. London anyone???? WTF?

This is gonna be a rough year for my Oilers, but it wont be as bad as the stretch of games we had after Ryan was traded. The PP will hopefully improve with Souray at command, and I have high hopes for Pitkanen as he's still very young (he just turned 24) and can gather a lot of points. Roli will have plenty of rest now with Garon as his backup who played the best out of the 684 goalies that LA used last season. Hemsky has to play less conservatively and start shooting the puck more often, with his good stickhandling skills I believe he really can rack up some goals on breakaways. Im crossing my fingers with Dustin Penner though he put up damn good numbers as a rookie last season along with his time in the American league, but after the bust that Lupul was I dont want to look like a fool twice.

What Im really looking foward to is our homegrown young guns, Robbie Schremp and Sam Ganger put monster offensive stats during their days in jr hockey and will be calling Rexall home when we're ready to contend for the Cup.

Outside of the Oil, this season really looks interesting:

-How far will the Rangers go after 2 huge FA signings
-How many points will come from Colorado's first line now that they have Ryan Smyth
-How good will Marty be now that he will be facing a lot more shots
-Can the Ducks repeat

Im not gonna make cup predictions at all, but I won't be shocked if the Ducks or Canucks are representing the West and Pittsburgh claims the East crown.

I love our team this year, but we're not without some holes. We do need to shore up the D, but we can always add through trades, especially since we have so much young talent (Bouchard, Mike Green, etc etc), plus a wealth of goaltending talent (Neuvirth, Varlamov)

1) The Rangers will be tough this year as Lund has another year under his belt and he'll probably put together his first good full season. If he played better in the first half last year he would have won the Ven going away.

2) Not so sure Smyth will be on the top line. I wouldn't be surprised if they go with a solid one, two punch. Not sure which configuration they'll choose, but I like the Brunette/Sakic/Wolski and Smyth/Stastny/Hejduk combo. Oh and the third line looks like Svatos/Arnason/Hlinka and the fourth line of Parker/Richardson/Lappy. I'm sure nothing is in stone right now and TJ Hensik is really making a camp push to make the team as Stastny did last year.

3) Sure Marty will take on more shots at first, but give the Devs time to gel and their D style will kick in for the noobs. The big issue here is will Lou keep a coach (another dumb move last year) and actually give Marty a rest. If it goes the way of last year, I bet they don't make the playoffs.

4) It takes a ton to repeat in the NHL, let alone in the West with it's physical ugly style at times. I doubt it very much, even though they'd be one of the favorites if the two old farts return.

Price isn't bad for his level, but he isn't ready for the pros yet. It's a different pace, style and much longer season. They'd be smart to give him time and make him the backup. If he does start, I'll bet you whatever you want he isn't even top three of this years rookie class. Remember, he in Montreal.

i agree the rangers should be tough this year but with the D the rangers have, lundqvist is going to have to stand on his head. this defense is weak:

46 Daniel Girardi
28 Andrew Hutchinson
8 Marek Malik
27 Paul Mara

I can't remember the last time I was this "scared" about the Devils upcoming season. Honestly the Rangers look fucking amazing on paper and I think theyre gonna run away with the division, which makes me upset. I hated losing Gomez so much, its the most painful free agent loss since Scott Neidermeyer. Gomez and Drury were on the front page of ESPN.com today and it was like rubbing salt on the wound. I don't have high expectation for my Devils, but I know the way that team is run and they will at least try and stay competitive. Hopefully they can make it to the playoffs.

So the Kings just won a 2-game Exhibition tourney in Austria and their offense(read: Anze Kopitar) looked in mid-season form. The defense looked shaky which, hopefully, can be attributed to playing on the Olympic size ice surface. The goaltending stepped up big in the 2nd game with 19 year old Jonathan Bernier and Jason LaBarbera splitting time between the pipes.

I'm hoping for a split in the first two games of the season against the Ducks. I just really hope this trip to London doesn't fuck them over. They were already going to have to play above their heads to make noise in the West but with a trek across the globe combined with the most miles traveled during the regular season it could spell disaster for a team with some many question marks.

When the Ducks and Canucks traveled to Japan in '97 I remember reading that both teams had a very hard time adjusting once they got back to America. I know it's impossible to fully gauge what kind of effect it did have on the teams but for the record they both finished at the bottom of the West(Ducks 12th 65 points, Canucks 13th 64 points).

http://www.sportsnetwork.com/default.asp?c=sportsnetwork&page=nhl/news/adn4104588.htm

Umberger, Lupul, Upshall and Jones are all hurt to varying degrees. Could it be karma for Downie's flying elbow smash on McAmmond?

He definitely left his feet and shouldn't lay a hit like that in the preseason, but was it an elbow on purpose? I don't see it. It was just a kid trying to land his spot on the team as a 4th liner I bet (who hit him?), but I'm not too sure. Not sure y he needed to kill him on that play though. I don't hear too much anger in the Sen booth on that hit.

Steve Downie is the hitter and he's quite the Sybil type of player. One day he's the Captain of his Juniors team and making the Canadian National team; the next he's cross checking a teammate in the teeth and fighting in him practice. According to what I've read Downie was laughing as he was walking to the dressing room after being thrown out of the Sens/Flyers game.

Looked like a charge, elbow and interference(mcammond didn't have the puck when he was hit) with intent to injure. Make him sit the the first 5 games of the season to teach him to keep his skates on the ice and be done with it.

I'm gonna enjoy Alexander Mikhailovich as much as I can...and be on pins and needles cause he's an RFA after this year, and I will be cringing until he signs an extension

I dont think our D is really all that bad to be honest...we've got a nice mix of good young talent (Green, Eminger, Morrisonn), some guys who can move the puck (Poti, Pothier) and some maulers (Erskine, Jurcina, Schultz). Plus, we can always add at the deadline if we need to.

And the PP looks DAMN good from the few preseason clips ive seen

Bernier and Cammalleri looked awesome and the ducks looked really slow. With the addition of fuck heads May, Bertuzzi and Burke over the last few years, we might as well start calling them the Vanc Canucks of old. And we all know how much I hate those assholes, including May when he played for the Avs. Funny enough, it was Marc Crawford (their old Canuck coach) who took them out to start the season.

My question to the league is twofold:

1) Where the hell was the advertising for this game/Did anyone outside of the hardcores really even know?

2) Why would you have the OPENER in Europe, and not do it later to spark interest mid-season?

I guess that's a moot point when you don't even advertise/get the word out on the start of the season anyway. Seriously, you are floundering in the US market, how about spreading the game here, where the fucking majority of the teams play all year!!!

it aint gonna be pretty, without Ryan the team has no leadership (though Im happy Moreau has the C) and no enforcer with Zach Stortini assigned to Springfield (question his role all you want, he's the heaviest tough guy). Matt Greene and JF Jacques arent big enough to dance with the divisions big guys such as Boogard, Pyatt, Hannan and Scott Parker. Roli will get his rest which can maybe result in even better number (I know, he's 38), especially with a solid backup like Garon.

Im thinking with the lack of offense and a slightly improved power play, we're not gonna put up enough crooked numbers in the box score--71pts, last place, out of playoffs.

I would expect the Western Conference Champions to come out of Northwest Division as both Vancouver and Calgary has improved drastically, Colorado can too if Budaj plays the whole season and is the real deal.

I was VERY impressed with my boys tonight, with what I saw of the game

Controlled the pace of the game from the outset, Backstrom looked really great, i love the energy brought by Diamond Dave Steckel, and the PP looked phenomenal

Alex Semin's got a bad ankle so he didn't make the trip, but he's probably playing tomorrow. Theyve got Backstrom playing with Nylander, and Semin is going to go on that line at the other wing. The top line's going to be Alexander Mikhailovich Ovechkin, Kozlov and and I think Tomas Fleischmann

They open up the regional feeds if it is the prime channel. I'm never sure which team will get the coverage angle as it seems to be random, not based on home or away. Also, at times it even jumps to TSN even though it's not a game with a Canadian team. Funny I know, but it's always on. The only time I have missed an Avs game over the last almost decade was Chicago BHawks bc they have crazy blackout rules even with DTV! Fuck that team and it old/current management.

If it's on Vs. or any other national network, then that usually trumps all others unless it's your local team. Also, there are game simulcast on HD.net, usually Thursday nights. The NHL package channels are 763-776. Usually you can find it all there in simulcast version. For example, 634 is the Florida FSN channel broadcasting the game at 7pm. It's also on 767 airing the same content. Yet when on 603 Versus or NBC in the past, there is no listing in the 700's.

Hope that helps.

Many ex-Whalers are still active in the NHL, including Pronger, Sanderson, Sami Kapanen, Burke, Shanahan, Jeff O'Neill and Cassels. Glen Wesley is the final Whaler still active with the Carolina/Hartford franchise, although his stint has not been continuous, playing seven games for the Toronto Maple Leafs in 2003 after a deadline deal before re-signing in Carolina in the 2003 offseason 1.

He was crushed about getting dealt there.. He had just gotten comfortable In St Louis.. I find it kinda Ironic that they held the draft the year he was drafted in Joe Louis.. Who knew that place would be a big part of his hockey life then.. He actually was involved in 2 Hall of Fame deals.. He got dealt to the Blues for Scotty Stevens.. Its rare that 2 HOF get dealt once for each other, let alone twice! It wasn't really a conventional trade.. But thats what it basically was in the end

Yeah...that was that wacky deal where Stevens ended up being sent as "compensation" to New Jersey when STL signed Brendan Shanahan

On 16 July 1990, Scott Stevens was signed as a restricted free-agent by the St. Louis Blues. Because of Stevens' contract status, the Blues were required to compensate the Capitals with five first-round draft picks, two of whom (Sergei Gonchar and Brendan Witt) went on to have significant NHL careers.

Despite the high price that the Blues paid, Stevens' tenure with the team would be short. On 25 July 1991, former New Jersey Devil forward Brendan Shanahan was signed as a restricted free-agent by the Blues. Consequently, the Blues owed the Devils compensation for signing Shanahan. As Shanahan was a Type II free agent, the teams needed to agree on proper compensation the Devils should receive. The two teams could not come to an agreement and, as such, an arbiter was used to hear both sides and determine what the Devils would receive. The Blues made an offer of compensation [to the Devils] consisting of goaltender Curtis Joseph, forward Rod Brind'Amour and two future draft picks, but the Devils wanted Stevens. In a decision that would eventually be a catalyst for the first work stoppage involving NHL players by the owners in the 1994-1995 season, an arbitrator ruled in favor of the Devils, thereby sending Shanahan to the Blues in exchange for Stevens on 3 September 1991.

After initially refusing to report to the Devils, Stevens reported to the team on 25 September 1991. One year later, prior to the start of his second season with the team, Stevens was named the fifth captain of the Devils, a title that he would hold until his retirement from the NHL.

The Blues attempted to reclaim Stevens when he became a restricted free-agent in 1994, signing a $17,000,000 offer sheet with Stevens on 3 July 1994. The Devils accused the Blues of contract tampering, but eventually matched the offer, signing Stevens to what was then the most lucrative contract in team history. After a four-year investigation, the NHL ruled in favour of the Devils, finding that the Blues had actually extended the offer to Stevens prior to his contract expiring with the Devils. The Devils were awarded $1,425,000 and a first round draft pick in compensation for the incident.

Anyone watch the Montreal game!? That Price kid looked awesome. Perhpas the Habs will return to power behind him.

PITTSBURGH (AP) -Carey Price needed only one game to evoke memories of Patrick Roy.

Exactly 22 years after Roy made his much-hyped NHL debut for the Montreal Canadiens in Pittsburgh, Price did the same and came out with a win, too.

Matching the rest of Roy's Hall of Fame career will certainly be tougher.

"It hasn't really hit me yet," said the 20-year-old Price after Montreal beat Pittsburgh 3-2 on Wednesday night. "It's pretty exciting."

Mark Recchi had two assists and Ryan Whitney and Maxime Talbot scored for Pittsburgh.

"The kid played pretty well, obviously made some big saves," Whitney said. "He won the game for them."

Price's NHL debut was an event that was highly anticipated across Canada after he earned national fame by leading Canada to the World Junior Championship last season, earning MVP honors in the process. The former No. 5 overall pick of the Canadiens also was goaltender of the year in major junior hockey last season and then led Hamilton to the American Hockey League championship last spring.

Price said he was more relaxed for Wednesday's game than he had been at the World Junior tournament or in the AHL Calder Cup finals.

"If you look at the way he played in the past, like in the World Juniors, he played really well and in Hamilton... when it was time to close a series, he was there and played well," Montreal coach Gui Carbonneau said. "And tonight was one of those games."

Canadiens Hall of Fame goalies Ken Dryden and Roy also made their NHL debuts against the Penguins - Roy's first game was a 5-3 victory on Oct. 10, 1985.

"I read it in the game notes," said Price, as cool in the postgame meeting with the media as he was between the pipes, "It's kind of a coincidence. It's kind of weird that's how that worked out."

We played like crap. Took a penalty TEN SECONDS into the game, plus the PK stunk. We were being outshot 37-14 after two periods, and couldn't generate any offensive flow, because we were constantly killing penalties

Its a tribute to our D that we ONLY lost 3-1...this could/should have been 7 or 8-1

Yea and that had nothing to do with The Rangers sending out a quality line the whole game.. Sometimes you just play a good team.. And the reason you only lost 3-1 is the Rangers have not gelled yet.. You make your team out to be the Wings or Ottawa.. Or even the Lanche.. You are improved but not that good where you could classify a loss against a team with the Rangers talent as you not playing well.

Oh, like the Islanders lost the other night? Heh, sorry I had to do that.

It was shitty of the Rangers to boo Nylander, and everyone agreed Poti is a 'mo and we would have booed him no matter what. My favorite was when I went to Rangers Bruins two seasons ago and everyone in the Garden was chanting "Leetch For Poti" while he was still on our team. He sucks. Everyone liked Nylander, but he wasn't beloved which is probably why he didn't get the respect he should have. He's been one of the driving forces on helping the Rangers go as far as they do now each season.

As for Boulerice I think he actually should have gotten a larger suspension. That was a hit for NO reason and the Flyers were winning by a landslide so its not like it could even be chalked up to aggression (not even that that'd be justified).

Hope the Rangers play as well tonight as they did last night.

Where exactly did I say that we were the Wings or Ottawa or Colorado?

Did you even WATCH the game? It was obvious from the opening draw it was not going to be our night, and it was clear that we shit the bed. It happens. Are the Rangers a good team? Yeah they are, but that game was CLEARLY a bed shitting. We were never competitive in that game.

I totally agree that hit was bullshit and 25 games is a good suspension. But watch the video and notice that Bertuzzi's suspension for almost killing someone (breaking Moore's neck) isn't even long enough to make the list! What a fucking joke that it!

Oh and anyone catch the Avs / Blue Jacket's game a few days back? Scott Parker got cross-checked in the face just like that and got busted up bad by the stick. Not one mention, no suspension, no fine. This is why the league has no control, it picks and chooses when to fine/suspend and the playoffs/Pronger 1 game suspension is a perfect example. Fucking wrong!

From wikipedia.

"Since its official launch in the United States, the NHL Network announced on October 8, 2007 its plans to begin airing that month through carriage agreements with Cablevision, Comcast, Cox Communications, DirecTV, Dish Network and Time Warner Cable.

Dish Network targetted October 17, 2007 as an initial launch date for NHL Network, but will only be available at the start for their high-definition television subscribers. DirecTV is expected to make NHL Network available by the end of the month [5] as is the case with Cox Communications customers in northern Virginia. That was super-scumbag of the Flyers, again. The league really needs to step in and do something about that. Everyone who was talking about the play was saying how he had ample time to stop himself.

And yes, the Ranger's lost...again. We really need to get it together, there was no reason that we should have had so many unfruitful shots. There were a couple of plays where we were just slightly out of position, most notably to me a pass to Hollweg last night in the second period where he just over-skated it by a second and couldn't get a shot off. Maybe getting Avery back in the line up when he's cleared to play will be the x-factor in getting us to gel better? Not that Avery is anything super-spectacular, but he's been missing since game 2, and we did pretty okay in the first game.

Too bad the Isles lost WAY worse, ahahahha. Small things for me to take solace in and at least from what I saw in the first period another example of stupid DiPi trying to play the puck when he shouldn't, spacing out, losing it and getting scored on. Good for him.

One of the reasons why Newark was picked is because of it's location. It's one of the most accessible locations in the state.

By the way, if anyone believes a new stadium can't completely change a city, check out this tidbit i read in the paper the other day

As Verizon Center begins its 10th year as home of three professional sports teams, city and business leaders are quick to credit the arena for sparking a remarkable revitalization of the District's downtown corridor.

The neighborhood around what now is Verizon Center was largely vacant a decade ago. The businesses that did operate there brought little in the way of life, let alone revenue, to the city. But in the decade since the arena opened, developers have invested more than $5 billion in the area. Nearly 10 million square feet of office space has appeared, along with scores of new restaurants, theaters and museums.

-------
It's difficult to determine the economic impact a sports facility has on its surrounding area. Many economists argue that stadiums and arenas contribute little to the local economy. Some even label them a drain on resources.

But the figures in this case are tough to ignore: Nearly $5 billion in development has been completed within a six-block radius of Verizon Center since it was built, representing more than $1 billion in tax revenue and 41,000 new jobs. The number of visitors to the area has tripled, and the number of restaurants has nearly doubled.

Quite simply, the area around Verizon Center is now a place city residents and suburbanites visit, both consciously and constantly.

"You actually hear people say, 'I don't go there anymore because it's too crowded,' " said Gerry Widdicombe, director of economic development for the Downtown D.C. Business Improvement District.

Not so a decade ago.

"Back then the area was all closed off," Mr. Malone said. "There was a park where the derelicts slept, and they urinated and everything there. There was just no life. It was just a seedy, forgotten part of the city."

Of course, this was not a matter of building an arena and watching development happen.

Real estate developers initially took big risks in assuming that foot traffic in the area would increase. Doug Jemal, owner of Douglas Development, became one of the first to jump in when he decided to redevelop Seventh Street, now home to several popular restaurants directly across from the arena.

Large tenants like Pepco, Washington Gas and the U.S. Mint gradually decided to relocate to the neighborhood. The International Spy Museum opened at 800 F St. NW and was an immediate hit, even though it was one of the few museums in the city to charge admission.

"You started to gradually see things come in and dot around there," Mr. Evans said.

Maybe there's hope for Newark?

We'll see. Corey Booker seems like he's got a good head on his shoulders, but this could also turn into a Baltimore situation, where the Inner Harbor area is fine but the rest of the city is hell.

The problem is, the fan support for the Devils was never there. It's inexcusable to have your second game in a brand new stadium only be 75 percent full.

what's even sadder is the level at which the Devils are playing.

the attendance in boston is horrible too. they have to resort to dragging out old timers to raise banners and shit to sell a ticket. sad thing is this is the best bruins team to hit the ice in a while. fuck ottawa

Thanks for accepting my Soul

I do appreciate that you are letting Lundquist shutout teams left and right. I did not ask for shutouts

Thanks

Their first few home games have had some bad timing. Either the same time or day as the Sox playoff or Pats games. Also the tickets are fucking expensive.

Being an oil fan mirrors that of a masochist, luckily being a knick fan ive adapted well. Roli gets sub'd against minnesota 8 shots into the 1st, starts the next game (opponent: colorado) making 35 saves and looses in a shootout.

Justifying why I've been very quiet here,

Hah, it's true you reuned it. Rangers played well and then just kind of gave up in the 3rd. Isles had some nice goals, but freakin' DP is still a mook. What was up with that play in the 2nd period (I think?) when he just held the freakin puck in his glove behind the net for 10 seconds like he didn't know what the fuck to do with it.

Oh, and stop stealing our fucking stick salute...fuckers.

I wish we had center ice this season. I'm not getting to see much of my Stars this year.

Its not your salute. It was started by european teams. yeesh. you ranger fans think you own everything. try winning a road game first.

We got to check out the NHL network the other weekend at one of the bars up here, looks pretty sweet. We're definitely thinking of getting Direct TV for it.

It's available on Comcast Digital, if you have it, on their sports tier.

BTW, I just realized that the Devils have a team in Newark, and their farm team in Trenton. All they need is another team in Camden and it would be an unholy trifecta of suck.

Gwen

We have comcast now and they're awful. We will do anything to get rid of it. All we see that is available is the NFL network, not the NHL network.

exactly, and if Lou just swallowed his pride and realized that guys like Rafalski and Neidermeyer (though im not sure how much of a role family played over money) needed to be signed to make you better then the Devils might not be in this position. The addition of Colin White helps them, but he's not a difference maker. Hopefully he will learn this lesson and go out in the off-season and make moves to help their defense. That's how the Devils won Cups, it wasnt from their remarkable offense, it was their stellar defense and a goalie at the top of his game.

is there a list of available free agent defensemen in '08? i'd like to see who could be available. even though i don't think our offense is up to par, especially with losing Gomez, i still think we could be successful with the offense we have. the defense just needs to get better.

yea me too, but if history tells us anything we know he's a good player. all players eventually play to their means, so i would attribute it to a slow start. hopefully im correct.
