A boyhood friend of mine asked me the other day if I remember ‘Indian Ball.’ After thinking back for a few seconds I recalled how the kids in our neighborhood in suburban Jacksonville might have developed the coolest game ever. Indian Ball was played between 1st and 2nd base of a baseball diamond. If you use the foul line down right field as one line and then make a line from Home plate-to second base-to the outfield wall; you have the other foul line. (A cone-shaped field, if you will)
One defensive player stands between 1st and 2nd base and the other defensive player stands in right field. The two players batting try and hit the ball between 1st and second base. If a ball is hit and fielded by the infielder before crossing the plane of 1st and 2nd base, it’s an out. If a fly ball is caught in the air or on one-hop, it’s an out.
A single gets through the infield. A double gets by the infielder and the outfielder. A triple gets by the outfielder in the air. And, we fortunately had a neighbor’s house with a fenced yard that backed up to the baseball field and was perfect for a nice ‘short porch’ for the High school kids but was ominously far for 7th and 8th graders. As we got older the owner of the house became increasingly pissed as baseballs hit his house every weekend.
3 outs per team per inning and play was typically 6 innings. It was and still remains the coolest homemade game of all time.

‘Tackleocco’ was a close second. There was one rule in Tackleocco----Kill the person who had the ball. We played in an easement that was fenced in on three sides. It was a very cool game as well; but did not stand the test of time like Indian Ball.

Does anyone have a better homemade game?

I made a Star Trek board game using the Micro Machines space ships. It was pretty cool. I still have it somewhere around here. Basically you went around the board trying to destroy the other player's ship (if you landed on the same space they were on or landed on the "Warp to battle" space where you attacked the nearest ship to you- if you had a successful hit they would lose one shielding). You win by being the last ship standing or being able to collect all three treaty alliances. At the same time you're also avoiding the Borg (who if they land on the space that your ship in on, they get a shot at you). The Borg move everytime someone rolls (I used a different color die for this).

The higher class the ship, the more shielding you had. Depending on the race the ship was from you had a cloaking device or didn’t.

There were also cards in the deck (similar to monopoly) like:

'Enter Q"- where you switch ships with someone else for the duration of the game. So if you started out with a sucky ship, you where in luck.

"Enter the Borg"- where another Borg ship appears on the board. So they could be multiple Borg ships moving and if 2 Borg ships we on the same space and they attacked you, double damage.

"Cloaking Device"- if your ship didn't have a cloaking device, it did now. (and the others players wouldn’t know you had one until they tried to attack you and you “cloaked”, then they knew).

Took me awhile to make the game board and work out the game mechanics. Had to read, watch and ask my friends that watched Star Trek to get some info to make sure it jived (like if the Borg could detect a ship that was cloaked). The best part was “Deep Space 9 can move?”. It was a pretty good game actually.

I tried to make one for Star Wars using the Micro Machine Figures, where the object of the game was to build your army and destroy the other players army but I only got as far as making a miniature rough draft of the game board. I wasn’t able to work out the game mechanics so I just gave up.

When I was in college me and my roommate started a game called the hat game. It was quite stupid when I think about it but we were under the heavy influence of THC so it is understandable. The game involved tossing a ball cap frisby style towards the person across the table from you and you gained a point if you were able to get that hat to land and stay on your head. First to ten was the winner. After a while we moved the game from tossing the hat across the coffee table to using the whole living room and making diving attempts across the carpet resulting in alot of rugburn.

We were(are?) idiots but it was a fun game.

There were a couple games we played that I'm not sure if they were widely played games.

One of them was ASS. In this game you threw a ball against a wall and anyone had to catch it. If the person trying to catch it dropped it they had to run to the wall before someone else could pick up the ball and throw it at them. If they got hit they'd get a letter (first letter A, second S, third S). When someone got ASS they'd have to stand against the wall with their ass sticking out and all the players got to throw the beam them with the ball.

Another was stoop ball. But I think this was more popular. You'd basically get a stoop and position players. It'd have the same exact rules as stickball (no baserunning, for example hitting it passed the blue car was a double), but it would just be throwing the ball as hard as you could off a stoop.

There were also dozens of variations of Football we'd find that could make a game out of 2 or 3 people.

We called it Red Ass but it was the exact same game that we played with a tennis ball. Great fun:thumbup:

Hot Beans And Butter

group of guys and a belt. one guy was chosen to go around the corner and hide his belt. after he hid it he yelled " Hot Beans And Butter ". Then the rest of the guys ran around to find the belt. If you found it you could whip anyone before they made it to home base if you could catch e'm.

When you think about it it's pretty funny. You had one eye looking for the belt and the other eye trying to watch the rest of the guys to see if they found it...

I invented this game where I would beat off thinking about your sister. Then I would beat off thinking about your mom, then your Gramma, and on, and on........

Very enjoyable, but a single player game only.

Here are some that I can remember.

- Curb Baseball which sounds similar to foodcourtdruide's Stoop Ball. In ours, there were just 3 players. The pitcher, catcher, and first baseman. The idea of the game was that your team was winning 1-0 and you had to protect that lead through 9 innings. Every 3 innings you would rotate so each of the 3 players got a chance to play each position (as 1st base was the most boring). Basically all you did was the pitcher would throw a tennis ball at the curb. When it bounced off, you had to throw it to first for the out. We basically just used an internal clock to determine if it took too long and thus the "runner" would be safe. Sounds simple, but every now and then the ball would hit the edge of the curb and go sailing over your head for an home run.

- Sni was a game where two players would kneel in front of their goal and each person would take turns trying to score a goal. It was played with a tennis ball and the only rule was it had to be bounced. You couldn't just whip it at each other. No idea where the name Sni came from, but I do recall a good share of nut shots.

- Card Wars involved shuffling a 52 card deck and then dealing out 2 sets of 5 cards each. You then arranged them in order from highest to lowest (Ace being highest) with one set directly over the other. You then counted which card of the top line was higher than the the equivalent one underneath. Meaning the first card from set A would be matched against the first card of Set B and this would continue all the way down the line. After the 5th card, whichever line scored highest would move on to the next round. If there was a tie, then the face value of the cards would be added up and whichever one scored highest moved on.

- Name Fight followed a similar rule as Card Wars, but this included names. It could be names of people, sports teams, bands, etc. You basically just took two sets of names and placed them one over the other with the 1st letter of set A matching the 1st letter of set B and so on down the line. For example, take the names Jones and Smith. Going down the line, S beats J, o beats m, n beats i, t beats e, and s beats h. That would make it Jones: 3 - Smith: 2. Some names would obviously be longer than others and there the letters that were unopposed would be given automatic points. Like Card Wars, if they were tied at the end, the total sum of the letter values (i.e. A=1, M=13, Z=26, etc.) would be added up and the higher number would be declared the winner.

In college, friends and I would play a games after the bars let out. Most were inspired by an excessive amount of cheap beer.

We would have a Caber Toss competition in the backyard using 2x4s nailed together. That was a real crown pleaser. This was pretty dangerous since I had a very small backyard, and lots of cars and drunks.

The other one was called American Gladiators. It was a lot like Assault on the show, but we used a BB gun and trash cans. You ran from can to can wearing a welding mask, trying to avoid getting hit. If you got hit by a BB, you lost, and it kind of hurt.
