View Full Version : Odd dreams

Nearly every night I dream
about my home town.
Psychologically speaking, I
know I'm "seeking the comfort
of the past" but I can't go
back there (my partents passed
away years ago and my old
house belongs to someone
else). What can I do to
"soothe my psyche?"

I dont even want to get into
the nightmares I've been
having. Crashing planes
and whatnot, but they're
super disturbing. I wish I
could make those go away,
too.

Alice, I think the dreams kind of just fade away. When I moved out of my childhood house and into my new one, I had dreams for like 2 years about my old house, but after a while they just went away by themselves. I know it's been a little longer than 2 years in your case, but maybe they will just go away with time.
IT'S TIME TO PLAY THE GAME-AHHH!

I often dream in Russian. Except the strange thing is: I don't know Russian, but I understand that people are speaking to me in Russian, but I have no clue what they're saying. I also often dream of people trying to kill me. Maybe I pissed off a lot of Commies in a past life.

Welcome to my family!
But seriously, I think I'm a "lost cause." I've been dreaming about hometown for years; since my dad died in '88. It would be nice to live there again. Unfortunately the real estate market there (north shore of LI) is WAY over inflated and I could never afford to live there again!

ALICE - You didn't give me much to go on, but based on what's present....
To soothe your psyche try to figure out what about your old childhood home you found comforting. It's possible that you feel warm fuzzy thoughts towards this house because you felt safe and secure there.
You mentioned your parents are both dead. You may be associating the home with the safety and security you felt when your parents were alive to comfort you and to share in your joys and sorrows.
This is especially likely in light of your recent marriage, an event you would have loved to share with your parents. Chances are you particularly missed them that day and the days following (if only unconsciously) and the dreams of the home are your way of trying to reach your parents through the memories associated with the house. Even though your parents were not alive to share your joy, in your dream, you recall fond memories of your time together.

Fuzz,
I was JUST talking to a friend about the same thing. She was having dreams about living in her old hometown. I told her that it was probably just a comfort dream brought on by an instinctual reaction to the recent events here in NYC. It also could be that you aren't getting enough sleep. Try drinking a glass of red wine (or two) before going to bed. I prefer Chateau Margeaux 87', or a Chateau Lafite 68' - Bourbon does the trick too - Basil Hayden (Single Barrel) or Rebel Yell.

Thank you HordeKing!
I think you hit the nail right
on the head b/c when I read
your post I started to cry! On
top of everything else, I hate
this time of year!!
And Chet, I never get enough
sleep except on the weekends.
But I have the most bizarre
dreams when I drink; sometimes
I can't tell what I dreamt and
what is realty (sort of like
Sheepy! I must be his "Mom"!!)

ALICE - I know it's rough -there's that void that can't be filled.
I'm glad you found Thunder and that he makes you happy. Ultimately happiness is what parents want for their children above all else.
I think it would be very helpful for you to talk to Thunder about the things you're feeling now, especially since there seems to be a need for comfort present.
No matter how much people love you, they can't read your mind. That's why talk is so crucial.
If there's anything I can do Alice, please e-mail me.

I think you're afriad of going back home again because it won't solve the unresolved issues that you wanted to fix with your parents.
Am I even close?

Sure, who doesn't have issues
with their parents? I'm just
very sad because I miss "what
I know." I wish I could open
up an old box from my
childhood and re-discover old
toys, books, etc. Right before
I sold my parents' house I
found a whole bunch of
homework my mom saved from 3rd
grade. That was 12 years ago--
I wish I had been smart enough
to save it.

Yeah, there's nothing like mementos to bring back old memories. When I went back home this summer, I went through a bunch of childhood stuff, yearbooks, school papers, pictures, chatchkes, and it was amazing what memories came up when I saw them again. It would probably do you good to write down about your childhood and what you remember about your family, friends, neighborhood, school, etc..
