Yankee’s prank strikes out
By Jason Millman
Sunday, September 16, 2007 - Updated 1d 10h ago
Talk about sore winners.
Griffin Whitman, a 10-year-old Red Sox [team stats] fan from Swampscott, was excited to attend his first Yankees vs. Red Sox game Friday night. The young autograph -collector was even more thrilled to score Yankees outfielder Shelley Duncan’s signature before the game. That is, until Griffin read the message from the 27-year-old rookie: “Red Sox suck! Shelley Duncan.”
“It was cool to get his autograph,” Griffin said. “It didn’t make me feel happy when he wrote that.”
Griffin’s mother, Karen, blasted the Yankees slugger’s bad manners.
“This is someone who wears the Yankee uniform and is on the payroll and should be setting an example for 10-year-olds,” she said.
Duncan, son of St. Louis Cardinals pitching coach Dave Duncan, has become a fan favorite in the Bronx for hitting mammoth home runs since he was called up from the minors in July.
Yesterday afternoon, a Yankee spokesman declined to comment until he got a chance to speak to Duncan.

What a classless fuck, and it has nothing to do with him being a role model. I'm no Yankee fan, but I do respect that they are team steeped with a legacy of class and tradition. Conducting himself in uniform like that is an affront to the organization. I'd hardly say that the Yankee greats were saints, but they would likely be disgusted by this sort of thing. The league should do nothing, but the Yankees should handle it internally by issuing a punishment and by putting the fear of God in him about conducting himself like that in the future. For good measure, the remnants of the 2000 team should probably beat the shit out of him as well.

Playing Devil's Advocate, as I always do...
Do we have any indication that the kid was in Red Sox gear when Shelley signed for him?
Think about it. If you're in Boston, and you're a rookie that doesn't know any better, do you honestly think a 10 year old Boston fan would ask you for an autograph? I'd assume it was a Yankee fan.
Besides which, fuck this "role model" shit. Between Tom Brady's antics and Belichick cheating, the Boston area has a lot more to worry about then a guy enforcing his team's main rivalry. Classless? Not really.

You really don't know that much about how Big George works, do you? If his brain wasn't half-Schiavo'ed by now, he'd probably give the kid a raise. Class and Tradition gets thrown out the window when it comes to three teams: The Red Sox, the Mets, and the Devil Rays.

When I saw this, I had a feeling it would split along the I'm a Dad/Not a Dad lines. I'm not a Dad, so I thought it was funny. But I understand Mikey's sentiments.
BTW-Someone brought this up in the Yankee thread, and its a good point. The article doesn't say whether the kid was wearing his Red Sox gear at the park like he is in the picture. If he wasn't wearing it, Duncan could have assumed that he was a Yankee fan, since he asked for his autograph.

If a 10 year old kid came up to me and gave me five, said "I love cops but I wanna be a fireman!" And I said, "Firemen suck" and walked away, I could end up losing a day's vacation at least.

A Policeman or Fireman serves the community and puts their lives in jepoardy everyday. They are people I would guess are much more likely to be role models for kids. So I think with that responsibility should come a little more accountability.
A McDonalds cog is no one to emulate, so he doesn't apply here.
The sports star is just a jock playing a game for your amusement. Why put so much weight on what he says? He's not meant to be put on a pedestal, he's meant to play a game that people watch and bet on.

You say the Mcdonalds kid doesnt apply because people dont look up to him.
But you also say people shouldnt look up to a baseball player.
So how, in your theory, are they different?
and like it or not, kids emulate sports players more than they do cops or firemen...
if youre a role model, whether you should be or not, you have to play the part, and have some idea of decency, in public at least.

That's parent's responsibility. Watch what your kids are doing, watch who they're emulating. Why should you put a lot of extra responsibility on a ball player's back just because someone's parents let their kid look up to the guy?
Stop putting the responsibility on everyone but parents. It's their job to make sure kids aren't watching and listening to adult content, not limiting that content to the rest of us. It's parent's responsibility that kids aren't looking up to people they shouldn't be too.

i agree.
as a parent myself, i dont watch or listen to things when my son is in the room, or in the car. i change the channel, not ask the channel to be more polite.
my house is baby-proofed; i dont expect anyone else's to be.
its my job to make sure he doesnt accidently break something.
our friends know to watch what they say when our son is within ear distance.
in terms of what this yankee player did, he's a schmuck and should be dealt with. if an adult were to ask for an autograph, i could see it being ok as a joke. but if he asks for it for his kid, or a kid asks, why would you be so classless and do that?

everyone keeps saying it was for a kid so its not right or even that its a bad thing. Why? Was this kid at the game listening to people scream "Yankees suck"? Yes he was, so why is it so bad that it was written on a piece of paper as a joke? Especially when the chants of yankees suck is done with so much hate and anger in the way they say it. The parents should never take their kid to a ball game if something Shelly wrote is so bad. Pro athletes were never role models for me. Why would an athlete be a role model? They play a kids game for a career and thats part of the reason they never grow up they are still kids.
Edit: Why do people want autographs? I never understood what the hell someones autograph does for you. Especially if you never really met the guy. All you get is a rushed signed piece of paper, ball, jersey etc. I think its funny that people spend so much time, money to get something signed.

I'll be honest, this is pretty small compared to them constantly throwing the ball at various Yankee's heads and sending Jeter and Soriano to the hospital on one occasion. And that Red Sox security guy who started a brawl in the Yankee bullpen a few years back.
