what a pricetag! if this much (and more) is going to spent to build it, the teams should call themselves New Jersey _____. Seriously, it is the right thing to do.

Giants set the precedent by moving to NJ first. Sorry.

Look, this argument was fun back in the mid-80's, but everyone has pretty much accepted it's the NY Metro area. The Washington Capitals played in Landover, Maryland for a while. (Not sure if they still do). The teams were borne in New York, and the Jets, until the Florham Park facility is done, maintained more of a New York prescence than the Giants did.

Now, on the flipside, if the Nets moved back to New York, I think it's allowable for them to be called the New York Nets, because again, they were borne there. However, I think they are going to be known as the Brooklyn Nets. I think. Right?

I'm proud of my state, but I think branding/marketing wise, they should stick with New York.

it is all a ploy to sell the merch. i got that. i just think it stinks on ice. the nets move to brooklyn, then they are the NY Nets or Brooklyn Nets. A team moves to a new city/state/county, they owe it to the people of that area to take its name.

Sports archetecture is a hobby of mine, so I did some quick research.

Although the stadium is expensive, there are two teams paying for it in one of the traditionally most expensive real estate/construction areas in the United States.

The most recently built open-air NFL stadium is Lincoln Financial Field, at a price tag of half a billion.

So for two teams, given the location and the additions compared to the Linc, 1.2 billion is expensive but it's not insane.

The Jets tried that. Remember? The West Side Stadium?

And about 8 zillion people agreed it's a really, really, REALLY bad idea.

Nobody wants to go out to Long Island because the roads and the infrastructure stinks.

The city can't handle the traffic and there was no room to tailgate and have fun.

It's not because it's cheaper in Jersey. It's not because they're saying "screw you" to New York. Logistically speaking, Jersey is the only place to sanely host 90K people for 16 sundays in a row.

And from a marketing standpoint, the double "juh" alliteration on "Jersey Giants" and "Jersey Jets" just sounds bad. And New York/New Jersey is just too cumbersome.

if they dont have room for a team...they shouldnt have one.

because a name sounds different or they dont have the room, makes no sense. There are plenty of places in ny where they can have their teams besides long island. if youre a fan...you'll go to a game no matter what.

Reading the press release, I think a decent portion of the price tag includes getting rail transit into the Meadowlands.

The exterior is going to transform game-to-game to reflect the team playing there. That is 31 flavors of awesome.

Reilly, you live in JC and Stu lives in the city, so it's a little different for you guys than people who live in the suburbs.

If they tried to play in Westchester, the stadium would be out of the reach of Suburban Jersey.

I am an ardent fan of the Yankees. I have not been to a game since 1999 because of how bad the traffic can be getting in and out of the stadium. I'm probably one of the biggest Jets fan on the board and I haven't been to a game since 2001 because of traffic. My father is a Mets fan and he would rather go see them play the Phillies - which mile-wise, is about 20 miles further than Shea is, because it's so much easier to get in and out of Citizens Bank than it is Queens.

There's a lot of logistics here, but Northeast NJ is the "fairest" place for the teams to play for the NYC suburbs, people who live in the city, Long Island, and New Jersey. Especially with the rail logistics.

I think there's also an argument for "tradition". They aren't "new" teams, they are teams who established their fanbase in NYC and still play for NYC. You can see the NYC skyline from the stadium.

I think why I give the Nets a pass on New Jersey is because they were borne in New York *AND* the fans in New Jersey have abandoned them, even when they were good. So they hold no reason to keep the New Jersey name because they never got support.

The Giants and The Jets still get support from their NY fanbases. If they changed their name, it would be akin to "disrespecting" their NY tradition and fanbase. It's not like they're moving to Los Angeles, they are six miles away from the state line.

Matty, i am not saying that they should build a stadium in the city. it is a good idea but it wont work. All i am saying is if they play in NJ then the name and the merch should have NJ in the name. the NY/NJ shit is a joke to me too.

the colts moved, should they still be called the Baltimore Colts? no.

you cross a state or city line you change your name. sorry. the NY fanbase would have to get over it. where do the taxes go that generated from the stadium? NY? If I worked at the stadium would NY state tax my income? no.

the difference with NYC and other cities is how close it is to NJ, and how much we really share. 3 miles outside of Manhattan on the west side is all NJ. no other major city has another state so close to it.

that part of NJ is just as much, if not way more, of a part of NYC as any part of long island or even some of the other boroughs. technically it is NJ, but really it gets treated like an extension of NYC

It's very very hard to sell-out an 82,500 seat facility for concerts. Concert promoters don't schedule stadium dates in the winter, usually it's just Arena dates. That being said, there's different technical and stage setups for arena shows vs. stadium shows.

Live Earth had a huge line-up and couldn't sell out Giants Stadium. Neither could Bon Jovi (although it was close).

With Brendan Byrne, MSG, and the Rock in Newark, it wasn't cost-effective.

A roof would also negate any weather advantage the teams would have, and going back to "tradition", do you really want to see the Giants or the Jets playing inside?

Again, I have a feeling that a good part of this 1.2b price tag is the rail system.

The Port Authority will service both rail and bus to the stadium, so in answer to that, yes, NY will be seeing a portion of the taxes.

I think the NFL has a rule that if the building has a retractable roof it has to be closed in cold and bad weather. The Giants were opposed to that because they like to use the cold to their advantage when a warm weather team comes in.

Over half the teams in the NFL play in domes and/or fairer weather than the Northeast. Considering that your home schedule is compromised of four games in your division, 2 games in-conference and 2 games out-of-conference, chances are very good that a good portion of the games you play at home will be against teams not used to the weather.

Im a huge Nets fan and it pisses me off that the Nets will be called Brooklyn or NY Nets. The reason im pissed isnt because they shouldnt be called either its simply because the jets and giants. If it was ok for those 2 shit organizations to keep their NY persona then let the Nets keep NJ. I love NY but Im so tired of NJ getting the short end of the stick. So many things are in NJ but NY gets credit for. Radio stations that are out of NJ are NY stations. Teams that play in NJ are called NY or at best NY/NJ. Whenever I hear a sporting event and they call it NY and then say "live from the meadowlands in NJ". Its just not far to the people who live and pay for everything in this state.

it is all a ploy to sell the merch. i got that. i just think it stinks on ice. the nets move to brooklyn, then they are the NY Nets or Brooklyn Nets. A team moves to a new city/state/county, they owe it to the people of that area to take its name.

So we have to pay the taxes, host the events, make other NJ residents get stuck in traffic but get shit on like NY owns our state? Fuck that. As for the names of the teams. Jersey Giants and Jersey Jets sounds good. The names go together perfectly.

Just so you know I have no love for the Giants but dispise the Jets. I wish they would move as far away as possible. Living in Norther Jersey my whole life and being forced to watch 2 of the most boring football teams in NFL history is what I hate most about living here.

I think there's also an argument for "tradition". They aren't "new" teams, they are teams who established their fanbase in NYC and still play for NYC. You can see the NYC skyline from the stadium.

And the Yankees get support from their NJ fanbase. Every team in this area get support from both NJ an NY fanbase so all teams should have NJ and NY in their names? No, name them after the city or state they play in. Fuck tradition, I bet there are more people that dont care about tradition then do.

I think the Dodgers should use Brooklyn and the Giants should have kept NY because tradition and they are not a "New" team.

BTW why are ou using this new freitag name instead of your tenbatz name.

I think this all has to do with the Major, Major difference in Pricing of building in NY, to building someplace else.. I think that Building in NY is at least 2 3 times more expensive than any place else.. Even if it is the exact same thing.. Thats why the Jets Stadium got shot down.. The crooked politicians like Bloomberg, and the Jets, and Real Estate guys were throwing a price tag around, where by the time it was done, It would have been at least twice as much on the tax payers..
