Can anyone recommend a good wireless router?
I have a Netgear WNR854T RangeMax™ Next Wireless Router - Gigabit Edition. It just died for the 2nd fucking time and they won't replace it again.
I don't want to have to replace my wireless router every 8 months, so if someone could recommend something with good speeds and some sort of reliability, that would be fantastic.

I have always been a fan of linksys, and since they got bought out my Cisco, they are even better in my opinion.
I have the WRT54G and def. like it, although it took me a while to get it configured with my bit torrent client to not drop my connections

QFT - my company has Linksys in every office and we rarely have problems. WRT45G is great, but they also have the new N routers. I haven't tried them yet but they are supposed to have 3 times the range and 9 times the speed of G routers. I know it will work with B & G cards, but I don't know how the range/speed claims translate if you aren't using N.

No routers make me nervous, and not just because of the name.
it is not a standard yet, at least I don't think it is, so if something changes, you now have hardware that can not be used anywhere else.

Exactly; I agree - but if it's just for home use, you might be able to get away with it. I have been thinking about getting an N router for home and so I can "test" for work, but I haven't had any additional income to play around with lately.
Just playing devil's advocate. Either way, I would suggest Linksys. I have had great results with their products.

i dunno if its my cable or my router, but my linksys sucks. it always goes out. i even bought a new one fairly recently because i had my old one for a few years & i thought that was the problem. i bought a new one & it still happens. the cable company keeps telling me that nothing is wrong. so i have to blame the router. linksys stinks.

The Houston Chronicle's tech columnist said it was OK to go ahead and get a N router a couple of months ago. Link (http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/business/silverman/4803997.html)

i've been using a dlink for a few years now, originally purchased from ebay. when it stopped working, dlink sent out a new one even though i wasn't the original purchaser (they had all his info, so he must have registered it). my only complaint is the wireless speed. i get like 2 MB/s from the thing on my notebook, even when I'm sitting right in front of the router.

do you live in an apartment complex? routers take the lowest speed of any device in the area. so maybe it is picking up someone else's device or maybe you have a smart phone or something that drops the speed

I got the Linksys Wireless-G Cable Gateway. It's a modem and router. I am very happy with it.

I have an N router and it's been lightning fast most of the time. Still, once in a while the signal goes from topped out to fair. It never seems to effect the use, but it's just weird to me.

We use a Linksys N Ultra Range Plus (http://www.amazon.com/Linksys-WRT160N-RangePlus-Wireless-N-Broadband/dp/B000Z3U1P6). Works great.

Mine has had no problems at all, and the set up was nonexistent.

I had one of the older Lynksys wireless G routers and I would have to constantly reset the thing and It would drop packets constantly. Either way it depends what you use the net for if your just browsing websites a Lynksys should suffice but I do allot of file transferring and the packet dropping was a huge problem for me that and the constant resetting of the router. I am pretty happy with my D Link wireless N I get great range with it and have no problems when it comes to packets being handled.

NOOO own two houses side by side
about 2.5 acres, garage is at the other house, so i was looking for a router with good range.
the linksys with mimeo(sp?) are great, the router at the one house serves the other house, the signal is only about 25%, but there are no connection issues.

This is the best piece of wireless equipment I have ever purchased: D-Link - DGL-4300 Wireless Gaming Router (http://www.amazon.com/D-Link-DGL-4300-Wireless-Gaming-Router/dp/B0006TIA02/ref=pd_bbs_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1223472946&sr=8-1)
I've always been a linksys guy, eventually moved over to trendnet, and then I found this gem. I can't remember the last time I had to powercycle it, I get fantastic range and connectivity. I can't recommend this enough. D-Link is sometimes hit or miss, but this is one of the best out there.
As far as N-routers, I am staying away. They haven't solidified the connection totally and I am sure it will be replaced by something even better within the next year.
But if ya need that kinda bandwidth with an N-router, go ahead.
