I was looking at art supplies this weekend with a friend and he spontaneously remembered those silver markers you used to find all over the place. The marker would also have a colored plastic ring that would also be the color of a thin outline to whatever you wrote.

These markers were also so awful that they would bleed through about 4 pages in your notebook and have that great toxic smell to them.

I think they were called Outliners.

Yeah, that was them. I blanked on the name, but my friend did remember the name the other day.

And God forbid you forgot to put the top back on it when you had to shake it like a spraypaint can to refresh/wet the tip...the paint splatter went everywhere & NEVER came out of your clothes.

I remember I was drawing a face on a balloon with one when the balloon popped and sprayed the paint all over. I started crying.

i think we called them paintpens. they came in pretty much every color & would usually be used to write your name on ceramic nicknacks.

I remember the girls used to use these and "gel roller" pens to write ridiculous long notes to each other where they would use a different color for every letter.

My middle school banned them because kids were using them to write on each other, clothes, etc. A couple of douchebags on the bus marked up some kids with angry parents and that was that.

Drusilla: These were the precursors to paint pens. They were like the "beta" version and paint pens were the "production model" that eventually came out, allowing for all the colors of the rainbow rather than just metallics.

Trivia fact: if you painted your fingernails with the silver paint-pen, and then used a clear coat on top, your fingernails would turn glossy black, which was convenient 20 years before Hot Topic.

Getting it off was a lot harder. You'd walk around looking like you had zombie hands for a little while.

Yeah, we old curmudgeons can be a pain in the butt with our "remember when" posts.

I would use them to draw on my pencilcase.
