Ok for years now I have considered myself well versed in all stats about baseball except one. When a reliever comes in for an inning maybe two of work, and he gets a 'H' next to his name, what the fuck does that mean?? I have seen that for years and never understood it. I have seen every variation on it too...V2, v12, etc. Anyone shed some light on it I appreciate it.

It's a "hold."

Here's the definition from MLB.com -

"The hold is not an official statistic, but it was created as a way to credit middle relief pitchers for a job well done. Starting pitchers get wins, and closers get saves, but the guys who pitch in between the two rarely get either statistic. So what's the most important thing one of these middle relievers can do? "Hold" a lead. If a reliever comes into a game to protect a lead, gets at least one out and leaves without giving up that lead, he gets a hold. But you can't get a save and a hold at the same time."

Pitcher stats are some of the wildest things ever invented.

A hold was created for when middle relievers went to arbitration, they would have a concrete stat to support they argument.

its the dumbest stat every. You can come in up 6, give up 4 runs in 1 inning, and still get a hold

It's great for fantasy baseball. Now you can pick up any pitcher and not just starters and closers.

Exactly, and its not like these guys are on a rotation, the same guy can get a hold for multiple games in a series, as opposed to your starter getting 1 chance per series.
