Enough of this Steve Carlton "Lefty" revisionist history from you Philly guys. The greatest lefty to pitch in the modern era was Sandy Koufax.
Next you'll be telling us that Von Hayes was better than Willie Mays.
Okay, that's my loudmouth opinion at 2am on a Sunday morning.Carry on.

Longevity...Koufax only pitched for 11 years, and played on some of the greatest teams ever...Carlton pitched over 20 years and played on TERRIBLE teams....
I mean, just for the fact that in 1972, Carlton won 27 games (including 8 shutouts) for a team that won 59 OVERALL is absolutely AMAZING...and over 30 complete games too. That has to be one of the top 5 pitching seasons EVER
Don't get me wrong, Koufax was amazing, but I give the edge to Carlton for longevity, and doing much more with less around him

i agree with Mudo here.
that is kind of like babe Ruth's 60 Hr's being more than some teams.
he was responsible for almost 50% of his teams wins. that would be like Roger Clemens winning 46 games for the Yankees one year.
The modern pitcher I would compare him to is Randy Johnson. He was consistently on shitty teams, but pitched his ass off.

What are you talking about? The Mariners, Astros, D-Backs, and Yankees ALL made the playoffs while he pitched for them. And calling the late 90's Mariners, the 2001 D-Backs, or the Yankees "shitty" is crazy.

Longevity means nothing. The Hall of Fame is full of stat compilers, and the one guy I can point to is Don Sutton. Sure, he had 300 wins, but he was NEVER a dominant pitcher.
And look at it this way: if you're life was on the line and you needed a starter in his prime, would take Carlton or Koufax? Hell, I would take Seaver over Carlton. Koufax was a freak, and judging him because of an 11 year career is silly.

Stat compiling is one thing, but you cannot just throw out longevity completely...Koufax broke down...Carlton never did, and that HAS to factor into any discussion of who's better
