We are running all XP and 2K pro machines at work. I want to get my Vista laptop on the network to do some file swapping. It is seen, but access is not allowed.
I set up my file sharing correctly. I set the network to private, but still no go.
i installed a bunch of network printers, no problem.
What am I missing?

Thanks.

It's not that bad for most applications. Plus it came pre loaded on my laptop.

/Does your network require a windows login or a novell login? Can you get to the internet? Is the network DHCP?

I can get on teh interwebs. It's all MS Network or hummingbird. As I said, I can print to network printers.

So your network policies allow network file sharing? Right clcik share folder etc...? If it's workgroup sharing In Vista it's the same method, try disabling the firewall to see ifthat helps. Check to see that you're part of the same IP subnet as the other PC you're trying to browse to or from. ex 186.156.145.21 otherwise the router might be blocking the request

i haven't spent any time on other networks with my vista machine yet. do you have a folder shared and open access enabled?

I tried disabling the firewall. (Both Windows and Norton) The funny thing is, I have 1 NT4 print server that sees EVERYTHING!
I tried from there also. Still no go.

Yup. I even temporarily set it below recommended security to see if that would help.

I've got vista x64 ultimate and XP on this laptop and I push and pull files just the same either way on my home network but I could never have it access file shares at work. I can only guess it has something to do with network policies. Your OS was not set up by your IT. It may need to get granted access to file servers or computers by logging in and validating into MS active directory. Printers often are not secure and any computer on the same subnet with DHCP can access them just by browsing for a new printer.

try mapping a network drive to your local machine using its IP address and your username and password.

From Vista, open up 'My Computer'

in the address bar type:

\\your.work.pc.IP.address\c$
then press enter.

You should be prompted for user\pass information. Enter you Domain info:
yourdomain\username
yourpassword

If you are in the administrators group of your local PC, you should have access the the entire C: now.

If you don't have local admin privileges, move whatever you want to copy into an already shared folder, and then instead of 'C$' from above put: \\ip.address\shared-folder

Depending on how locked-down your network security policies are, one of those methods should work.

Zag. Thanks for the input. Good to see you posting.

For the record, I was able to crack the case. It was all a double/triple firewall issue. Vista is set up so anally. You need to scale it back a bit. Then Norton on top of that.

At least I know I can visit porn sites, and not get an e-STD!!

no prob... I'm new to the whole message board thing, so I figured that a post from 4 days ago or so was probably ok to bump... :D
