I could not agree more. The Harmony 880 (by logitech) is the single greatest remote I've ever used. It's completely programmable over the web, and will control anything you have (including my Roomba).

We use a Universal MX950 I absolutely love it with all of my heart. It requires a pro to program it however.

sometimes it thinks its smarter than me though, so i gotta tell it what's up.

In my time at Tweeter I saw a lot of Harmony owners come in and ask if we service them, could show a problem with the remote, or could show a problem with the user or where they bought it. That's the extent of my knowledge on it though, as we didn't sell them.

is there a brand name on the cablebox? Not who the provider is (cablevision) but a manufacturer, like Atlanta Scientfic or Panansonic or something?

Yeah, it's a Scientific Atlanta Explorer 8300HD DVR... I've wanted to get one of those remotes, but didn't think they would work w/ the DVR box... looks like the logitech one might

I'm pretty sure they work with everything.
Even if its not in their library, the remote has a learning feature, so you can teach it any controls another remote uses.

The best part of Logitech's remotes is that you save your configurations online. If you have to replace or reprogram the remote you simply download the configuration.

I was wondering the same thing about "the clapper". Where you are the remote, and if I remember the commercials properly you were so outrageously old, old people made fun of you.

you can use the logitech on pretty much anything. It learns any remote that is infrared.
they have really good deals on these remotes. its well worth it for years to come. Ive had mine for a couple of years now and still going strong.

Go with the Harmony 880. If you watch Dell's website, or even slickdeals, they go on sale a lot. I got mine about a year ago for $115.
They also have the 890, which I believe is just silver. Although, it is $140 more, so there's probably better features.
The Harmony 1000 is the bee's knees, though. Full 3.5", color touch screen LCD.
I've gone through a lot of decent money universal remotes. I'll never buy a non-harmony remote again.

Got the remote today. Holy shit, this thing is great!
Easy to set up and everything is stored online in case I need to make changes or add components.
I highly recommend it.
One thing I'm concerned about. I have a Motorola 6416 cable box. I found a code online to designate any button as a 30 second skip button. That's probably my favorite feature of the Motorola remote.
Am I able to program the 880 with that same feature?

I guess I should've played with it a little. The button is already on there, as well as the 15 second reverse button.

I have everything hooked up through my receiver.
TV
DVR
DVD Player
CD Jukebox
CD Recorder
VCR
Satellite Radio
If I want to watch TV, I press the DVR button and the remote turns on my TV, DVR, receiver, and makes sure the TV is on the correct channel and that the receiver is on the right input.
If I suddenly decide to want to listen to a CD, I press the CD button and the TV and DVR shut off and the receiver changes to the correct input.
Really simple.

I'm getting my first floor wired with speakers in most of the rooms, and outside, along with a new entertainment set-up. I'm using the "Magnolia" people at Best Buy. They said the Logitech's were good, but they recommended the "Universal Remote" remote controller (http://www.universalremote.com/product_detail.php?model=38). It works by radio frequency rather than infrared, which is helpful for us, since we're going to need to use it outside. We'll see how it works.

Anyone know of any good quality universal remotes that actually work properly? I bought a new Toshiba LCD TV, d am getting tired of having a remote for the TV (volume, picture size, and input control) one for the sat receiver (channels, program guide, etc) and one for the Playstation (my primary DVD player).
I have seen these $400 + remotes that look cool, but my wife would kill me for spending that much on a remote. Anyone have any luck with any cheaper ones?

growing up my parents would only buy these because we kept losing them and we'd have to buy another
http://dsp.imageg.net/graphics/product_images/p3911186p275w.jpg
(well actually I think they would get rid of them every once and a while because they figured we'd watch less tv if it was harder to change the channel)

Harmony 880 from Amazon for $85 after rebate (http://slickdeals.net/permadeal/13196/Logitech-Harmony-880-Advanced-Universal-remote-85-After-50-Rebate)
If you have a lot of components and need a universal remote, I cannot stress enough that you need this remote. Its fucking magical. And for $85, it's an absolute steal.
