The cd turned 25 on August 17, so what was your first cd?

I don't remember exactly which cd was my first when I got my first cd player in a stereo in 1987, but I think it may have been Bon Jovi - New Jersey, as much as I am embarrassed to say.

I was relatively late to start buying CD's, mainly because they were so expensive compared to tapes and I rocked my Walkman like a mofo. The first CD that I actually bought myself was:

http://img205.echo.cx/img205/4924/pearljamvs6xq.jpg

Even after that I still mostly got cassettes until I graduated high school in 1997. Then I started buying CD's like mad.

I joined BMG or whatever under 2 names, so I got like twenty all at once.
The first ones I made an effort and went to the record store were when they started releasing the Beatles albums 2 at a time every few weeks.

BMG was fucking awesome -- how did they make money?

Well, their shipping and handling costs were artificially high. Also, they made money on the dumbasses who didn't send the subscription cards back and didn't realize you could write "return to sender" on the unopened monthly CDs and drop them in a mailbox. Also, BMG licensed the CDs from the other majors, so they manufactured them themselves, keeping the cost of acquiring CDs down.

Coil-Gold Is The Metal With The Broadest Shoulders. Mail ordered from Germany in the summer of 1987. My room mate (Who I later threatened with a sword. Cuz he was a wizard, duh!) had a CD player. I accumulated some 30 or 40 CDs before I got MY first CD player, which I traded a bunch of Krautrock LPs for, ironically.

I waited till 1992 to finally buy a radio with a CD player when I went away to college. Then waited until Christmas to actually buy any CDs (it played cassettes too & I was lazy & broke). The first two CDs, which I bought on the same day, were:

The Who - Who's Better, Who's Best

http://content.answers.com/main/content/img/amg/pop_albums/7/8/r/g78948hxdrb.jpg

Van Halen - Live! Right Here, Right Now

http://www.vanhalenstore.com/shop/graphics/00000001/CD10B.jpg

The CD Boombox was then stolen out of my Seton Hall dorm room while I was in the next room playing EA Sports NHL 93 on Sega Genesis. I waited another 6 months to replace the radio, but kept buying CDs.

I bought the Reservoir Dogs soundtrack and Vulgar Display of Power at the same time. I didn't even have a CD player; I have no idea why I would buy two cds with no means to enjoy them. Eventually, a friend lent me his 6-disc CD unit from his home system. I had no receiver or speakers or anything, so I would put the player on the floor next to my bed and listen to those two CDs on shuffle all night with headphones while I was sleeping. What a fucking weirdo.

I bought this one in the summer of 1986 - I believe. I hadn't really heard much Jam, but as a value-conscious sort I was seduced by the "60 Minutes of music" promise. The silly thing is, I was a mere lad of 14 and didn't even own a CD player. I still have it and am always amazed how heavy it is - not musically, mind you - it seems to weigh twice as much as a modern compact disc.

Remember that back then CD's were partially made from black holes, hence their weightiness and their tendancy to absorb the light of neighbouring stars.

I don't remember CDs being heavier but I seem to remember there was a lot more packaging in the beginning. Does a long cardboard box seem familiar to anyone else? It was before I bought CD's so my memory is foggy.

Like the last speaker of an ancient language, I hold a forbidden knowledge. Longboxes once ruled the racks like longships once ruled the seas prowling for longpig. Some of those longboxes have since become collectible which proves that mankind is doomed. Imports generally came in long plastic shells that were stapled together showing the booklet on top and the CD case on the bottom, keeping the hot hot, and the cool cool. And, lo, in those last days before a great comet fell to earth and blotted out the sun in a cloud of dust and iridium, killing off the last of the longboxes...in those last days, distributors started sending out the longboxes with little square orange and yellow stickers denoting that the CD inside was shrinkwrapped and essentially ready to be shucked of the offending longbox, priced and put on the sales floor in its much easier to steal naked form. The longbox finally went the way of the Triceritops around 1995. Little did mankind know then that without the longbox to dilute its powerful contents, CDs would soon cause an epidemic of ED, giving rise to Viagra. CDs were always a profiteering plot by Pfizer. Pfuck you Pfizer.

So, has any of yooz guyz suffered from so called crotch, i mean, disc rot? I've seen a couple of my oldest CDs change colour, but I can't say that I've documented even a single personal case in all the thousands of CDs I have bought and stolen over the years. Many friends have claimed that they have had CDs go bad, but many of those friends were known to do rails off their CDs, so maybe their CDs were just too stoned to play correctly.

Of all the music we owned, my son (then less than 1 year old) only wanted to hear Bob Marley. His word for "music" was "chookick". If he asked to hear "chookick", and we played anything other than Marley, he'd yell, "NOOOO... CHOOKICK!!!", until we put Marley on.

The first CD that I ever owned was Pearl Jam's Vs., but that was given to me as a gift, so I don't know if it counts. The first CD's I ever got myself was a sign up with Columbia House's CD club shortly thereafter, and I know Nirvana's Geffen albums were part of that, Superunknown and Badmotorfinger by Soundgarden and STP's first two albums.

I was a big holdout with CD's, as I have been ever since with every other tech jump. It didn't help moving to Bangkok when I was 15, and tapes there cost the equivalent of 2 bucks and CD's cost about $20. Outside of rigging Columbia House, I pretty much only bought mountains of tapes until I was 18, and then the first CD that I actually bought was Blur's Blur.

I was 11 years old. My dad just bought the first CD player for the house, and I went to the store with him to buy some CDs. He said I could get one for myself.

I picked this one because it was digitally recorded in studio. Spent like $125 on a piece of doody one cd rack component (non-programable).

The first CD's I bought for myself were Highwayman (Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash, Kris Kristofferson & Waylon Jennings) and Fiddler on the Roof (Original B'way cast recording with Zero Mostel)

I was 16.

At some point, our family joined Columbia House or something and we all got to pick a couple of CD's to make the "10 for a penny" deal ... I chose Peter, Paul and Mommy Too and something else dorky, but I've forgotten what it was. I probably still have it in my "collection."

Before that, I had tapes. Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (original B'way cast with Len Cariou & Angela Lansbury, which I have only recently been able to "replace" because my tape player has been broken for almost 15 years), Man of LaMancha (original B'way cast with Joan Deiner), Electric Youth (Debbie Gibson, back when she was still "Debbie" and not "Deborah") ... and a ton of cassette singles because I could buy those with my allowance and not have to worry about hating the rest of an album. (This was a tip I'd gotten from a kids' version of Consumer Reports magazine.)

Before tapes, my parents had a record player. They would set the records up in a stack so we could listen to the music for hours and hours ... Dad had the Star Wars soundtrack on vinyl, Mom had Jesus Christ Superstar ... we also had the blue and red Beatles compilations, War of the Worlds (which I've swiped and hidden away somewhere), Annie (which I used to listen to ad nauseum as a small child) ... the classics, really.
