There was nothing better than the Scooter calling Bobby Murcer "Huckleberry"

I remember watching Andy Hawkins pitch that losing no-hitter in the early nineties, where he never gave up a hit but the game was wrought with Yankee errors, and on a fly ball to Jesse Barfield, I think, Phil Rizzutto, then part of the Yankee broadcast team, said, "Oh, I hope he doesn't drop it."

He did.

An infamous Yankee game I love that I watched as a young Mets fan.

I have many fond memories of watching yankees games and listening to you on channel 11.

i have great memories of my childhood associated with the scooter

the interplay between him and bill white and later with tom seaver was just the best

a few weeks ago, there was thunder and lightning during a game and bobby murcer was reminiscing fondly how scooter would've been long gone over the GWB

RIP

RIP Scooter.
When you were on the radio I felt as if I was listening to my grandfather telling stories of the old days of baseball. It felt warm and enjoyable. Even when you left the stadium early you still made it fun ti listen to you during the games.

Thanks for the memories. All of them.

i remember watching yankee games on chan 11 when he used to call them.
i loved listening to him talk about whatever, then say something like "oh yeah, the count is 0-1" (as if he forgot that there is a game going on.)

sigh

maybe its better now. he doesnt have to watch talentless hacks like Joe Buck call the games.

I heard his heart stopped as soon as he heard "YOU CAN BET ON BETTEMIT!"

But seriously, this is sad news. Rizutto was an absolute legend and he'll be missed. I hope the Yankees honor him tonight at The Stadium.

He loved the game, that was obvious to anyone who watched/listened to him talk about it.
RIP Scooter.

how ironic, last night crippler, justice and I were talking about scooter as an announcer and how funny he was. I have a lot of good memories as child listening to yankee games and scooter doing play by play (or talking about pizza, peoples birthdays, his neighbors grandchildren , etc lol) He will be missed.

I grew up listening to Rizzuto. There will never... ever... be another broadcaster quite like him. He was never full of himself. He always brought a smile to my face. I used to do an impression of him when I was younger.

I lost a little piece of my childhood today.

Seeing Yogi right now breaks my heart.

Oh Scooter, we hardly knew thee. I still associate watching yankee games as a kid with rizzuto. He was something special. I actually had tears in my eyes when i heard this. its like a piece of my youth is gone.

Rest in peace, Scooter, you ol' huckleberry

I grew up listening to the Scooter as well.......

I remember one game...I think Mike Stanley was catching. Pitcher delivered the ball and it hit the plate, bounced up under protector and caught Stanley right in the jewels. Rizzuto made the call. "That one rang the bell....."

Even though I'm a Red Sox fan, my family is all Yankee fans so I often had to watch Yankee games on Channel 11 with Scooter, Frank Messer and Bill White doing the play by play. As others have said before, it was a big part of my childhood too.

Billy Crystal did a bit on Letterman some years ago about Scooter that was one of the funniest things he ever did. It was something to the effect that Scooter never got fazed calling a game: "nuclear missiles are heading toward Manhattan as Mattingly looks at Ball One."

Thoughts and prayers to Cora.

RIP. Scooter is the perfect baseball nickname. He was given the moniker by a southern teammate who said Phil, when running the bases, was "scootin', not runnin' ".

I heard he had no clue the meaning of his call that is included in Meatloaf's Dashboard song. "Its a suicide bunt, looks he's going to make it home..."
