View Full Version : I Fired Someone Today

I've had people before me in the past with some serious charges against them, but I've never actually fired someone. It was a new hire that blantantly cheated on his final exam to qualify for the job. There is no way around it that the guy cheated. When I approached him about it he denied it. Me a colleague explained him again and again how there was no possible way that he was telling the truth. I was trying to give him the opportunity early on to fess up and admit it. I would have been more open to giving him a warning and giving him a second chance had he admitted it and apologized. I would have given him the chance at least to do the test over again. But he kept denying it, which made me madder because he was literally lying to me, right to my face. The girl who was sitting next to him had left her copy of the test by him, so he copied off of hers and one of the parts of the exam you have to physically enter something into the system and get a confirmation number. There is no possible way for two people to get the same exact number but yet they did and only she had an entry in the system, not him. I gave him one last chance to admit it, he denied it again so I had no choice but to fire him.
He then left in a huff slamming the door and punching the wall, it was kind've creepy, but he luckily didn't hurt anyone.

Reef, he was a lier and a dick. You absolutely did the right thing. Even giving the creep a chance to fess up is more than most would do.
Don't sweat it. You don't need asses like that working with you.

Not to mention the way he reacted when you fired him. He obviously has rage issues.

H'Tub is absolutely right. The guy was a lying cheating ass, and he got exactly what he deserved. Don't let him bring you down because he's an asshole.
He's gone. Move on.

You did the right thing! He would have been a menace if you let him do a "do over". He would have been a liar, a cheat and maybe a thief too, so it is good riddance! Someone more deserving will now be able to get a job.

Thanks, I was actually annoyed with myself because it took a while for me to pull the trigger and do it, so to speak. I was surprised how hard it was for me to find the words. I wasn't even worried about him even though he was a big guy, it was more that I wanted to do it right and I didn't want to say the wrong thing that made me hesitant. In a way I'm glad to have it behind me, hopefully it will be easier the next time around. In no way did I take pleasure in it, but it is a part of the job. If anything he did it to himself.

Fire someone else first thing tomorrow morning, just for the practice.
Kidding! My mom was a human resources manager for a long time and had to fire and lay off a lot of people. She said it never got easier.
Luckily, I've never had to do it.

Firing someone always sucks, no matter how it goes down. The last time I was fired my boss practically was crying. He had to let me go because of the recession in 2001.
I've seen some people at my job get fired, and mostly it was because they weren't grasping the skills they needed to have to perform their jobs. One time though, it was because of personal problems between two office girls, one of whom threatened the other with a razor knife. When she was fired, she started crying like a little girl and screaming at the other girl and threatening to "get her for this." We wound up having to call the cops. It was creepy. But I did feel bad for her, she had had a rough upbringing, and also was a single mom. I hope she is doing better elsewhere.
But I feel bad for you. On a personal level, even if you don't like the person, having to fire someone from their job is uncomfortable at the very least, and if you like the person and the office is generally a freindly "first name basis" area like my job, having to lose an employee is the worst thing a boss has on his mind.

Statistics have shown that it's safer to fire someone on a Friday. Less chance of an incident.

Had to fire this one lady once right before Christmas ! I was going to wait until after the first of the year but she asked if her job was in jeapordy and I couldn't lie to her. Very bad timing on her part! It was the best for everybody and now I think back and have a laugh about it. I think it will be a lot easier the next time.

Reef....This is one subject that I have had a lot of experience...1000% of the time the employee does better..I've tracked it and it has always been true in my encounters.I could tell you some great stories about older men I have fired . They broke down in my office. To come back gleaming about there new job. I'm just to nice and I love to have people like me.The only exception to this rule is cut backs. My poor wife is still suffering about losing her job after 29.5 years at Federal Mogal..I swear to all of you it was the most unjust thing I have ever seen in a corporate setting..She would cry in the morning when she would open her eyes to awake .Realizing it was not a dream..Sorry Im not a very good typer..Jug

I was fired from a job too once or twice and now I am doing better than ever. Don't worry about it so much, brother - he will be fine and like I said, now your people will respect you more.

It is hard firing people even when they deserve it.
I had to fire someone I actually thought was an OK guy but they just weren't doing what was expected of them. I was just getting more and more pissed about it until finally something went down that I couldn't hide from the boss anymore and everything got put up on the table so to speak. I always try to handle problems between me and the people under me without bringing the boss into it, I mean, that's part of the reason I'm the Manager. To manage problems before anyone higher up than me has to.
But when the time came to drop the hammer, I still felt really bad about it. There's just something about telling someone "You can't earn money here to live anymore" that really gets to you, even if it's the person's fault.
You did the right thing Reef. You gave them an opportunity to come clean and even get away with a warning and taking this test again, but they won't do it. It's not your fault, he put you in that position. I know it's easier to say than to make yourself believe, but try to remember that.
