My fallback spot is Angelo's in Maywood. Huge sammich with steak-like meat, real cheese, and peppers, onions and mushrooms.
I am really directing this question to the non-Ny NJ and of course PA people. Do you even have such a thing?

That's an easy one. I get mine where I work. They're quite tasty, and I get a 50% discount. They make it with both provolone and american, but I usually tell them to use just the provolone.

I'm no cheesesteak expert, but in Houston we have Texadelphia (http://www.texadelphia.com/), which I find to be pretty good.

Try Mike's Steak Joint, on Baily and Minnesoty, Get the "Steak in the Hood" 1/2lb steak 1/4lb itailain sausage and all the fixin's. Jim's is great, but I think Mike's is a little bit better, plus you have nice gheto crowd oposed to the drunk douch's I alway seem to run into at Jims.

not much to add because I haven't bought a cheesesteak for as long as I can remember. I do know that I don't like when they chop the steak up into pieces and cook it. I prefer a solid piece of meat, thin but not too thin with a little bit of fat. just like some deli-counters like shop-rite, they have turkey and ham that's all chopped up, I prefer solid slices

Funk, I love ya, but have to disagree. The meat has to be chopped up, and fried WITH the onions. Then you take two long metal spatulas, and scoop from each side. Lay the cheese on top, and just as the cheese is about to melt, pick up with the spatulas and put on awaiting roll with ketchup and extra mayo. Yum!!!
Damn. Now I'm starvin'!

if have this untrusting feeling that they chop the steak up because they're using a 'less quality' piece of meat and they can hide it easier somehow. when it's whole i can see and feel(with my mouth) exactly what I'm getting. i'm sure I'm being a bit paranoid about it though
thanks for the suggestion, the way you describe it makes it sound too good to pass up...

i have never come close to have one better than Charlies in Kenilworth NJ. they also have kick ass italian hotdogs.
Are you talking about Charlies Italian hot dog place? I think they use thin sliced roast beef, soak it in a auju sauce and then throw it in the bun. They are pretty good.

Oh I disagree. I like thin sliced steaks chopped in to little pieces (except midway they leave it whole)
Anyway my favorites in this order are
Midway
White Rose (Roselle NJ)
Glendale Pizza (Union)
When I was a kid there was a cheesesteak place in "the center" (business section in Union) it was called Hanks. Well they had the best cheesesteaks ever. Hank would always put brown gravy on them. I thought that was normal until I got older and ordered it that way somewhere else. They looked at me like I had 3 heads. Anyway the place went out of business, but if you ever get a chance try brown gravy on your cheesesteak.

Some of the best steaks I had was at Tony Lukes' by the ECW Arena. I had some last year before a concert at Citizen's Bank Ball Park with Baz and Chet. The steaks were good, roast pork, not so much.
I think outside of Philly, Voltaco's in Ocean City, NJ had some pretty good steaks - the bread they used was phenomenal - but it's been a while since I've been down there, so I don't know if the quality has declined or not.
It's been so long since I had a decent cheesesteak in central Jersey though. I'll have to think about this.

No real steak joints up here in North Jersey. But when I'm in Philly I have to go to Abner's near Drexel University. Great steaks. You order right from the guy cooking your steak and if you drop a tip over the glass, he'll make you a football sized sandwich. They also have good curly fries and a beer fridge with all shapes and sizes to choose from (not sure if they got da 40's but I know they got da quarts!)
Or you could go to this place and drop a C note:

Are you a complete and total retard? Taking 287 is WAAAAY out of the way.
Getting to Angelo's is most convenient if you take the NJ Turnpike North to Route 80 West. From Route 80, you'll take the 2nd Route 17 exit and then take the Essex Street exit off of 17. Turn right at the top of the exit ramp and make a left at the traffic light; this puts you on Maywood Avenue.
Follow Maywood Avenue into the downtown; I think there are 3 or 4 traffic lights until you get to the Commerce Bank, where you will make a left. Angelo's is a couple blocks down, on the left-hand side of the street, near where IGA/Maywood Market used to be.
I'll be damned if I know mileage, exit numbers or whether you're going northbound or southbound because I can do this on auto-pilot. . .I practically grew up in Maywood.

I can't find cheesesteaks anywhere out here. But I do get them in the employee cafeteria where I work. On steam tables there is a pan of thinly sliced beef, marinating, with provolone cheese melted on top of the whole mass. Next to it is a pan of peppers. Throw it all on a roll, the juice is the sauce, and that's it. By the time I get to it, it's usually been sitting there for a few hours. So it's not too good.

it's insanely kitschy, but pugsley's pizza (http://www.pugsleypizza.com/gpage1.html) in the bronx is my favorite pizzeria and has a great cheesesteak. i haven't been there too much since graduating college...need to go back soon. plus, they have perhaps the worst web-site ever. love is it!
I forgot about that place. In Philly I do Tony Luke's. In Southern NJ I go to Big John's. I dont eat them in NY cause I like to keep it a local treat when I head down to the Philly Area.

Me and my cousin did this once. We tried 2 or 3 different cheesesteak places. I wasnt impressed with the authentic philly cheesesteaks. Your not missing much. If anything the whole wit, wit out and if you dont order the way they want they kick you out of line attitudes kind of sucks. I would say if your in the area give it a try and decide for yourself. I could care less if I ever get another authentic philly cheesesteak.

I lived there for 10 years.
Check out Primos in South Philly for one hell of a hogie. Nick's Roast Beef in South Philly off of like 23rd and Jackson has the best roast beef in the state. Delicious beef on rolls with au jus and horseradish. Also, Scooters north of Drexel on Powelton and 38th(ish) has the best chicken delux sandwiches. Chicken cutlets, provalone, spinach and garlic covered in hot sauce. They even sell OE pounders by the six pack.

Abner's (near Drexel). I know that I've posted about this place once before somewhere on here. It's the best spot. PLUS... they have a wall of beer to choose from. You order right from the guy making the steaks at the grill, tip him a few bucks over the glass divider and you'll end up with a sandwich the size of a football. (I get provalone & mushrooms) Slide your tray down to the cashiers and get yourself a quart (or a forty) of something nice. Behind you there are plenty of tables with all of the fixin's in holders (hot sauce, ketchup, mayo etc...) and rolls of paper towels.

Im back to report about my experience in Phllly......in a word, disappointed. I went to a show at the Khyber in ye olde city, and that was fantastic. the disappointment came when i went to Jims to get some post-midnight snacks (it was close to the bar and close to my hotel). not enough cheese, not enough flavor. i can get a better steak sandwhich at a place 5 blocks from my house. but ive always considered myself an open-minded guy, so next time i go down, im going to give a shot to one of the "not-famous" places. ill review this thread at that time and make my choice. thanks for all the responses, gents and dames, it was appreciated.

I too was in Philly over the weekend. Happened to stumble upon Jim's on Saturday night. I must take the opposite view of the cheesesteak, I thought it was awesome. I got the standard (with the whiz) I liked it exactly for the fact you didn't, it wasn't overloaded with cheese, but the combination of cheese, steak, and onions was delicious. Given I'm no connoisseur (this was my first authentic cheesesteak), but I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Unfortunately, I've lived in the Philly area all my life.
I'd have to go with Jim's in the city.
If you have the opportunity to travel a bit outside the city, you have to try either Pudge's in Blue Bell or Pudge's II in Jeffersonville.
Huge and fantastic.
Ask for extra cheese, though. Lot o' steak.
There's a dozen places in Philly better than Pat's or Geno's (some of them already mentioned in the thread).
But if you're going the name-brand tourism route, Pat's is way better and has been for years. You could conceivably get one of each since they're right across the street from each other, and compare.
