I LOVE Rape!

Broccoli Rape, that is. My mom came over today and brought some food. I hadn't had this dish in a while. It's sauteed in olive oil and garlic. It's great as a side dish or just by itself, with a squeeze of fresh lemon. It's got this bitter and sweet at the same time taste to it.

I remember when I was growing up my parents would buy it by the case from the Italian grocer. My friends would come over and see these empty cardboard boxes in the garage that said "Rape" on them and they would wonder what was going on in our house.

I think the PC Police have recently changed the spelling to "Rabe". But that's bullshit! It was, is, and forever shall be "Rape" in my house.

i never witnessed the rape, only the rabe

my dad made it often when i was growing up. try it in an omellette, deelish!

Brown some garlic in olive oil in a deep frying pan that has a cover. While its browning, wash the broccoli rabe well and drain it. When the garlic is browned, toss in the broccoli rabe and cover it quickly with the cover, or else it will splatter and pop and you'll get hot oil on you. Lit it sit there for a minute or so and then open the lid and quickly toss it with a spatula and cover again. It will reduce in size and wilt, but do not over cook.
