yea def LSU, good call.
but who would go play for USF when you can play for Miami or FSU?
Because ballers aren't stupid. USF is a school on the rise when Miami and FSU has been declining. You have a better chance to be visible - and therefore get into the NFL - playing for a good program than one that's relying on it's prestige from the 80's and 90's.

LSU gets most of their kids from Louisiana (but they also do very well in Mississippi, which is why both of those schools in Mississippi proper suck now, and they get some good kids out of Texas)
The problem as I see it is:
1) There used to be three taps going into Florida for talent...Miami, FSU, and Florida. Now pretty much EVERYONE gets Florida talent...even some of the lesser programs in D1 get Florida people because of the proliferation of the staffs of those universities now spread throughout the country (Spurrier at South Carolina, Chuck Amato when he was at NCState, Mark Richt at Georgia)
2) Miami is NOTORIOUS for having poo poo facilities, and I think that's coming back to haunt them on that front. And I also think FSU is being KILLED by Florida on recruiting, because (a) Urban Meyer is a hell of a recruiter and (b) the SEC is a much better conference to play in than the SEC in terms of getting kids ready for the pros, and the fan bases are better there than in the ACC
3)I dont think "Florida talent" is as good as everyone thinks it is. Do they have good football players? Yes, they do. But at this point, I'm thinking the best football players are coming out of Texas, California, Louisiana, Ohio and Pennsylvania in that order. I just think that in terms of what ive seen in recent years, the players from Florida haven't been as good as the players from those states, ESPECIALLY Texas
JimBeam, you raise some good points about LSU. They may not have been playing top tier teams, but LSU DAMN sure looked like a great football team. I see really no holes for them either on defense (lots of seniors, two amazing players in Ali Highsmith and Glenn Dorsey, who will probably both be top 10 picks, and Chevis Jackson might be a top 10-20 pick too), or on offense (Matt Flynn is athletic, has experience even though its his first year starting, and besides, Ryan Perilloux is a superstar in waiting that verbally committed to Texas and then came to LSU, which makes him one of my heroes, and Keiland Williams and Jacob Hester are really good backs, plus I LOVE what ive seen out of Brandon Lafell, never mind that Early Doucet guy who's got a good chance to be ANOTHER top 10 pick)

The thing w/ the recruits from the state of FL is that there are only so many spots to fill on any team, including the Big 3, and players nowadays would rather play at smaller schools than sit the bench for 1 or 2 years at the big schools.
That's why we have so much more parity these days.
But dont be fooled. In the end the talent and skill that the bigger schools get will allow them to win games against these other schools at a very high percentage.
For example one 5 star RB going to say Central Florida doenst mean they can go into FSU and win on a consistent basis because FSU will have not only several 5 star players but many more 3 and 4 star athletes. Those are the players that make the difference over 4 quarters.
Also not matter how great a program is right now it only takes 1 or 2 so-so classes to slow them down a bit.
With the " powerhouses " most recruiting is still very regional w/ schools getting 98% of their players in state and possibly stealing a few good players from a neighboring one.
You wont see an LSU or a USC looking into NY or NJ for many players unless they have a good reason.

And the Florida schools return the favor by stealing the better guys from NJ. Well, the ones that Penn State, Notre Dame, Wisconsin, etc. haven't already grabbed. You forget how powrful the appeal of going south is to kinds from the cold north. "you mean it's 85 degrees year round? Sign me up."
I know it's pretty early but Penn State has a defense for the ages. As soon as they get AJ Wallace in at the second corner. Of course, he's playing the nickel and is returning kickoffs, so it's all good.
I'm surprised the 'offensive genius' Weis could have come up with something that would work against the defense. The best play he could come up with was swing passes hoping that guys would miss tackles. Here is a secret: They don't. Not in the past 3 or 4 years.

Yeah and as I posted yeaterday the 2 losses that the Big East has are by Syrcuse which is the only team to play 2 teams from a major BCS conference.
Credit for the Or St and Auburn wins but the other 12 wins are as weak as they come.
Miami's actually going to be getting a new stadium in the next few years.
The whole Miami/UF/FSU thing is cyclical.
There are points in the last 20 years where 1 had the advantage over the others and that will always be a shifting scale.
All it takes is a coach putting his eggs in one basket and that could hurt him.
I think you may see that this year w/ UF when they start Tebow for a full year.
He's energetic on the ground but can he beat an LSU or a Tenn when/if he needs to pass ?
We shall see.

So it's OK for Miami/UF/FSU, but it's NOT ok for Rutgers/Louisville/WVU, with the only different being that the Big East Teams have only about a "quarter" of the tradition that he Floridian teams have?

if this were true, why would so many of their former players (http://www.eastvalleytribune.com/story/73272) go there to work out?
Because fomer players love going back to their school. They always show people on the sidelines during games--if you watched the PSU-ND game, LaVar Arrington was at the game. He might be at all of them now, he has a lot of time on his hands.
And to your original point, Miami doesn't need to update their facilities because they have those big name former players at their facilities. Most people pitch recruits with 'look how great our work out room is,' etc... And that impresses people. Miami pitches recruits by putting them in between Willis McGahee and Edgerin James. And then look over there--it's Clinton Portis and Sean Taylor. Wow, Frank Gore just walked in. (you get the point) And the former players don't care. I mean how much you can improve on a bench press? It's all weights to them, hell, they've used those facilities for years, probably feels like home to them. Regardless of how bad condition they are in.

Offense crapped the bed...we did a pretty good job on D most of the night. I could understand the point of the gameplan (keep WV off the field), but it did come off as being a little too conservative. And i really think they should have just kept pounding Lattimore instead of flipping him in and out with Ball, who was pretty ineffective. Keion killed them on the stretch runs all night. No offense generated through the air...not a whiff. That HAS to change as the season goes on. Its a shame the whole team has to suffer because Josh Portis decided to cheat on a stupid quiz.
It wasn't as big as the final score indicated...this was a REALLY close game

Too many turnovers and wasted opportunities too. The fumble on the very first play was inexcusable, and it led to a TD. Lost points right before halftime too when he tried to go for the Josh Allen Play, but Steffy made a bad throw.
And that very last drive at the end of the game after the onside kick was just pathetic to the point of being depressing
And speaking of depressing, why couldn't Erin Andrews show up when I went to school at Maryland?????

ND has got to win this game just so that I can hear Mike Hart explain why he didn't win after guranteeing a victory.
For some reason I'm also casually interested in the USC/Neb game.

Rushing stats for college teams are deceiving because they include sacks, in reality they have rushed for 38 yards, still horrible but its not negative.

Hilarious. They ran him out after basically the same seasons that ole failed stapled stomach has had; yet Weis gets a 10 year deal. Weird. I admit, I hate ND, and yes it probably stems from jealousy somewhere deep inside, but who cares they suck this year. I was thrilled to see the chosen one suck it up again this week.

This is not coming from being an ND fan, which I am. But if I am the top recruit in the nation and announcing my plans to attend wherever it was I am going I would say we are going to win 4 National Titles as well, almost every single big recruit does it, people just dont know it cause they dont follow signing day. Ryan Mallet did the same thing and said he is coming Michigan (not 4 but said he wants to win National Titles every year). Why go to a school if you arent there to win 4 national titles?

The difference between Weis and Willingham is supposedly recruiting. Weis had one of the best classes this year, so hopefully they give him time before throwing him out.

Agreed, but not so over the top "I am going to win 4". Some rational thinking would have been nice, he comes from a football family - a family of flops may I add - so he should have known better. Also, he shows up to the speech, wearing all of his high school title rings to show off- great - but he has to take the heat after another sub par performance. Yes his o-line sucks and he has no running game, yada yada yada.

last years recruiting class, the one with Clausen, 4 Offensive linemen, some were very good at HS. Our Oline is just very young, last year we had 4 seniors and 1 true freshman, so its hard to replace 4 linemen and not expect some kind of drop off plus that 1 true freshman freaking sucks now apparently. Yes our new center is still a center, but obviously is having lots of problems with snaps.
This years recruiting class, the OL we have already gotten commits from are pretty good, Braxston Cave, Mike Golic, a couple others but they also tend to move people around alot.

yes i completely agree with the academic standards i think its the one bright spot of our team, at least our players can read. One of the major reasons Urban Meyer did not come here was because he wanted ND Admissions to accept all his Juco transfers and they flat out said no unless they have the grades and scores to back it up, which of course they don't.

But I think they should do that with all college coaches. If they aren't there for 4 or 5 years, you really have no idea what he could be.

I've had season tickets to Rutgers since that season, and I really, really resent the new "fans" who come to the games now. They're fucking horrible. So many people don't come to watch a football game. They come to walk around the stadium for the whole game looking for their friends and standing in front of me. They come to do the awful fucking wave. They come to play with a beach ball. The parents just let their 7 year old kids run around the stadium all alone. It's horrible.
It felt great sitting in the stadium for the second half, especially the fourth quarter. The place cleared out and it felt like it did in the old days when the crowd was only a few thousand strong for an entire game. It's great to see the team I've been following since I was 8 years old finally being very successful, but it's bittersweet because the douchebags who come to the games really make it hard to enjoy.

ND shouldn't take JUCO transfers just to make them a better football team.
The only disservice it is is to the players who commited to go their for 4 years and did and do what they need to to stay eligible.
I don't have the exact numbers though I remember reading them when Willingham had gotten fired but at one point Willingham had lost more games by 20+ points ( actually I think it was mid to high 20s ) and had allowed 40+ points by the opponent in more games than any of the previous coaches combined.
Now Weis has taken his lumps in the 2 BCS games ( and obvioulsy yesterday ) but I don't think it's anywhere near Willingham's numbers.
I'm making a t-shirt that says something along the lines of " Ntre Ame .... they don't have an O or D so why should I ??!! "

My entire apartment complex now knows that Bama won that game.
Holy Shit! That was AWESOME!
Nick Saban is the most underpaid coach in America.
Suddenly, I am not looking forward to the FSU-Bama matchup in Jacksonville in 2 weeks. I'm looking forward even less to going into the swamp at the end of the season.
Did anyone catch the USC-Nebraska game? That WR for Neb, Purify, got 2 DUIs over the summer and got a 1 game suspension? What a dirty prick Bill Callahan is. They deserved to get their shit handed to them.

Heh... the Texas game back in '99 was the first RU game I ever went to. The stadium was packed and it was 90% Texas fans.
I watched a lot of the USC/Nebraska game and the announcing was bad.
I mean I like Herbstreit, he knows his stuff, and usually Musberger is tollerable but there were times when they missed whole plays.
This was mostly due to ABC wanting to interview Clarence Thomas but while the reporter was talking to him they could've been doing the game.
There was a time when it was 3rd and 20 for Nebraska from their own 5 and from what I saw they threw an incomplete pass and it should've been 4th an 20.
Next thing you know Nebraska has the ball 1st and 10 from the 20.
There was never any mention of what happened.
Now I think it must've been a roughing the QB call because at one point later they showed a USC defender and then showed the Neb QB but it was never confirmed on air.
To be honest watching the play live it didn't look like they had even gotten a hit on him let alone roughed him.
I was also disappointed in the score. To anybody who didnt watch the game and only sees the final score it looks like Nebraska was competetive but I can assure you that they weren't.
It was 42-10 at one point and that was after Neb was up 10-7.
I don't know if USC is as good as they looked but their RBs were running threw huge holes.
That defense looked good too as they were just pushing around the Neb O-line early.

I knew it was over for Nebraska when they had Larry the Cable Guy announcing their starting lineups. Reggie Bush > Larry The Cable Guy.
Actually, I knew it was over before that when USC had 50 and 40 yard runs on 2 of its first 3 plays. There are just some moments when a difference in speed is starkly evident, and those were a couple of them.
JimBeam
09-16-2007, 11:40 AM
Yeah Neb had some momentum as they had put USC back @ their own 5 for the first possesion but nothing like a 50 yard run from scrimmage by the FB to take some wind out of the sails.
Then one of the 15 RBs rips off a 40+ run.
Not only was the Larry The Cable Guy thing stupid but he's still using his tired catch phrase.
Maybe Foxworthy will do a game one day and use his old " You might be a .... " schtick.
While we're on announcers I couldnt hep but notice a lot of pissiness in the voice of Maguire during the ND game. Here's a guy who's supposed to be unbiased and he was just tearing into them. I mean I know it's his job to analyze and point things out but the way he was doing it made it seem personal.

You know, Spoon brought up a good point in the "Douchebag Rutgers Fans" thread, and it's valid to bring up here.
There is no such thing as a bandwagon college football fan if you actually, you know, go to the school and/or went to the school.
The bandwagon fans are people who have never gone to the school and/or have zero relations to the school whatsoever (family members who go). I'm looking at you, East Side Dave.
JUST BECAUSE YOU LIVE IN NEW JERSEY DOES NOT MAKE YOU ENTITLED TO BE A RUTGERS FAN. I grew up in a Rutgers household. Even though I didn't go there (grades weren't good enough and then when I was getting ready to transfer, my father specifically requested that I not go there)
You can't berate Rutgers student fans for liking the team because they have been doing well since Schiano came on board. You just can't. Rutgers has set the bar for crappy college football for 20+ years.

I have no problem, and never have had a problem, with bandwagon fans. If people are going to start going to the games to WATCH them, then I'm cool with that. It doesn't matter if they didn't even know Rutgers had a football team. My problem is with the people who go to the games and then proceed to do everything BUT watch the game. And that's a lot of people, especially those around me.
I'm just used to going to the games in the years where 2 wins was a godsend and I could have an entire section of the stadium to myself. Not that that is what is best, and I'm more than elated that Rutgers is finally becoming a real football team. I love getting to go to a packed, loud stadium and to see it on TV.
I just don't like people who go to the games and spend all of their time paying attention to anything that isn't the game. And coming to talk to their friends and standing right in front of me as plays are happening down on the field. 3 games this year and I'm already fucking tired of saying "hey, sit down, I'm trying to watch the game".

nice little article over on the front page of ESPN by Pat Forde. some quotes about the Irish:
"Of course all the accountability for Notre Dame's historic offensive collapse rests with Ty Willingham. The Dash deeply regrets not coming to that conclusion last week. It doesn't matter how many three-and-outs occur on the watch of the current head coach; just blame it on the last one."
"In keeping with September revisionist history, Notre Dame fans have unearthed evidence that Hurricane Katrina, high gas prices and defaulted home loans also are directly attributable to Willingham's tenure in South Bend, Ind."
I'm glad somebody else realizes that majority of this blame should be laid on Weis.

I dont think there should be ANY blame placed on anyone...ESPECIALLY Weis
They just hit a gap in recruiting...it happens, and itll work itself out again as the new kids theyve brought in get older. But ND fans also have to realize that they just aren't a superpower any more. They have the name, but in terms of recruiting, they can't compete with the Texases, LSUs, Southern Cals, and Oklahomas any more, so theyre going to have seasons like this where the team is full of kids that just aren't ready to play yet

i disagree, and let me tell you why. I dont know how to post links here, so go over to foxsports.com and read Michael Rosenberg's column on Weis. I've been saying this for a few weeks now.....I'm a life-long, die hard ND fan and as a Jersey guy I'm also a huge fan of Weis. But things like this bother me, and this is from Rosenberg's article:
"Weis is supposed to be cut from the same mold as Bill Parcells, a Jersey guy with a big ego who builds championship teams. But Parcells would never have taken a new job and announced that his teams would have a "decided schematic advantage" against every opponent, as Weis did. Do you understand what Charlie Weis did? He took credit for winning before he even won."
that along with this, which sums up perfectly how I feel:
"Weis has brought in three recruiting classes. The first one was a transition class, but the last two were not. I think most Notre Dame fans understood the Fighting Irish would not be very good this year. But in your third year at Notre Dame, the team should at least be competitive."
TheGameHHH

and El Mudo, i do agree that they have kids that simply arent ready to play yet and that will work itself out in the future.......but you can't be this offensive genius and not put the ball in the end zone ONCE in 3 games. granted Weis is not that man out there making plays, he can't do it himself. but as a "genius" he should be able to design something that would lead the offensive to at least ONE score in 12 quarters

I don't understand what you're saying. The polls are ridiculous because Rutgers won their game and Nebraska lost and Rutgers moved up?
And then you're saying if Nebraska played Norfolk St. and Rutgers played USC, Nebraska would have lost and Rutgers would have won?
To answer your questions:
Louisville's loss, UCLA's loss, and Nebraska's loss is what helped Rutgers' bump in the standings. It wasn't just Nebraska.
And I like Rutgers, but even if Rutgers was playing USC at home, I'm not positive Rutgers would win. It's the "any given day" theory at work. It's why you play the game.

South Carolina and LSU kick off in Baton Rouge about a half hour on CBS. That's going to be a pretty darn good game, as will Kentucky and Arkansas at 6pm. I'm going to hope someone picks up the Maryland game, or ill be forced to listen to it on the radio while I watch LSU/USC

Recruiting is cyclical and ND does consistently get 5 star players evrey year regardless of how well they play because to many of those players the education is the difference.
Both USC and LSU sucked ( or more like light years different than they are now ) w/ recruting 10 years or so ago and everybody was going to FSU, Miami and Nebraska.
I think NDs chances of winning 6 games were aided by the apparent vulnerabilty of UCLA who are no longer being viewd as USC Jr.
ND will win those final 4 games of the season so all they have to do is pull an upset in 2 of the other games and they could get the 6 wins.
Outside of USC there's nobody left on the schedule that's frightening and that includes BC.
ND laid an egg in the Mich rivalry but tye'll play better against BC.
Hopefully !!
PS - why was Mich given so much credit for " rebounding " when they beat a lame ND team that's now 0-3 ?

Yeah that win Ty Willingham had against Syracuse this year sure was something.
Reminded me of the time he lead ND to a thrilling 38-12 season ending loss to those same Orangemen which capped of a spectacular 5-7 campaign.
I do sometimes forget what a great coach he was.
Some claim Spurrier was the genius but now that Willingham is 2-2 ( with another loss to a ranked team ) @ Washington maybe he should be considerd the genius.
I also rememnisce for the the 3 times he lost to USC by 31 points ( he managed to knock that down to only 27 points his first year @ Washington, and actually only lost by 6 last year, but signs are he'll be back to 27+ next weekend ).
Glad to see he handled a UCLA team coming off a 44-6 loss and playing w/out their starting QB.
In 2 weeks Weis may have more wins in the PAC10 than Willingham this year if ND can pull off the upset of UCLA.

USF has a scary-ass team. They were VERY good last year and would have been in the mix if Rutgers didn't beat them.
I'm not complaining. WVU had no business winning that game. It was just sloppy craptastic play by them. Turnovers, botched snaps... I've never seen that many botched snaps.
USF 2007 = Rutgers 2006.

funny thing is, if you look at the stats you'd think wvu had a big win...till you get to the 6 turnovers.
1st Downs 21 13

Rushing 188 139
Penalties 1-11 5-40
3rd Down Conversions 5-17 6-14

Turnovers 6 4

While I will give credit to USF for a big win for their program let's not make this defense out to be fantastic.
They might have come up w/ 6 turnovers but most of those were courtesy of WVU ( yes I know turnovers are always courtesy of the other team but sometikes the defense causes them and other times the defense is just in a place to take advantage of them ).
They gave up a few huge 4th down a long conversions and missed a lot of tackles.
Oh and I think those of you that were boasting 5 H-man candidates in the Big East are left w/ only 1 " realistic " candidate.
According to the Gameday guys on ESPN Radio ND just scored their first offenseive TD but ........................ they missed the extra point.
I'm really starting to think that maybe this Weis guy is a jackass.

I am going to find a jersey of the true freshman kicker – seeing him do the chomp topped off a terrific day of college football. Only if the golden boys from SC could fall.

I'd say a majority of big time schools are hostile. I had no problems with LSU fans. Georgia fans can be very hostile. Even though we have beaten them like what 15 of the last 17 games. I guess it's just its frustration. I would be frustrated as well(see Dolphins vs. Jets) I was in the UF band and don't understand why people would waste their voice to yell and scream at us. I went to LSU and have never been a fan of the football team and their fans are just like other fans in that they can be harsh and rude to fans of other teams the thing that's differnet is that when you get out into the tailgating they treat you like friends.
They welcome you into their gatherings w/ open arms and you may just have to deal w/ a little ribbing.
I haven't been to any other SEC schools so I'm not sure if the same rings true there.
As far as the kicker doing the chomp somebody on UF should've reminded him that he was a kicker and that even a win over UF doesn't erase a loss to USF and Miss St.
He's from Florida as was probably pissy that they didn't recruit him.
I hate when non-skill players act the ass.

That timeout business is all the rage now and is no more harmless than calling the timeout 10 seconds before the snap.
Whether or not the " icing " crap even works is one question but every coach runs through the motions regardless. They sometikes do it 2 times if they have 2 timeouts.
I'm no fan of UF or Meyer but I'm even less of a fan of taunting from a guy who's on the field for 2 minutes total a game and doesn't get his jersey dirty. If a skill player that made that drive possible wants to chirp that's one thing but it's silly coming from somebody that has made as much physical contact in the game as the cheerleaders.

by your logic we also shouldn't boo kickers if they miss a crucial kick, since they're not real players.
JimBeam
09-30-2007, 10:59 AM
No I'm not saying the dude shouldn't be proud of what he did but what did he do to earn the right to taunt other than hide behind a line of 9 other guys and kick the ball w/out fear of being hit ?
Don't confuse my distaste for his antics, which I believe to be hollow, with criticism of the position itself.
In fact I'll argue even more that you boo a kicker if he misses a kick because he has one job to do and he has the aformentioned protection of 9 guys as well a several penalties to protect him in his attempt.
No risk, no reward.
Now if he attempts a kick that's a long shot or if there's some difficulty w/ the snap/hold then the kicker shouldn't be faulted.
Now this comparison is between him and his peers not him and you/I watching this happen on TV ( although he did look like a bit of a dandy so I think I could take him ).

In 2 weeks Weis may have more wins in the PAC10 than Willingham this year if ND can pull off the upset of UCLA.
good to see USC shit on Ty yesterday, that was a huge 3 point blowout.....man, willingham doesnt even deserve to be on the same field as that USC powerhouse.
dont worry, im sure weis will keep USC in check. ND will prob win that game, or at worst lose by only 1. thus proving once and for all that weis is a better coach.

So now Willingham is a great coach because this time he didnt lose by 31 points ?
And if you think that the game last night was close because of anything that Willingham did than you know much less about football than I give you credit for.
That game was an inter-squad game for USC.
You think it's even close w/out the 180+ yards in penalties and at least 3 turnovers ?
You're right Willingham had another team poised any ready to go.
USC gave up almost as many yards in penalties as Ty's team generated in total yards ( 161 to 190 ).
He's the next coming of Bear Bryant.

Looks like Weis now has more wins in the PAC10 than Willngham does this year.
Shit now w/ even a glimmer of hope of beating USC this year ND could go 3-0 or at the very least 2-1 versus the PAC10 this year.
On a side not kudos to Stanford for pulling off that upset.
I was pissed the game wasn't on regular TV.
I saw the score on the ticker of the UF/LSU game and knew that it seemed too close.
I was hoping UF would hold on to the lead they had when I shut off the game but alas to no avail.

i'll tell you what, here's how we'll settle this. instead of going back and forth every week, why dont we just save the talking and at the end of the year we'll look at one thing.......their records. that way their wins and losses can do the talking. not who beat who in conference, which is crazy to begin with because N.D. doesnt have a conference so its not like the reverse argument can even be used. and not only that, we'll also see who had the better 3rd year at N.D.

because anyone who actually knows sports knows that the record doesnt necc show EVERYTHING about the coaching job. Remember what Lou Pinella did in TB? Exactly

Evan Sharply needs to be the starting QB at Notre Dame this season, its painfully obvious.

Down goes LSU
I called it....I KNEW that trip to Kentucky would be trouble for them
And Andre Woodson probably just won himself the Heisman

I enjoyed the beating my Ducks gave Washington State (as they were supposed to).
Also, USC barely pulled out that win against Arizona...They don't deserve to be ranked 10th.

Look at that. #3 South Florida. Who are they playing next week?
Oh.
Right.
The next two weeks will set the tone for the big East.

Am I really prepared to live in a world where CAL is the number one team in the country?

Better then the world we were living in with LSU being number 1.
The sad thing is Cal's bound to lose and Ohio State is gonna get that top spot eventually.

either way Ohio State wins the National Championship
either way Ohio State wins the National Championship
If LSU wins out they still might get a shot at the title. They would absolutely DESTROY Ohio State.

Ohio State won't play a team as good as Kentucky all year.
