View Full Version : How do you shave?

What does everybody do/use? I'm trying to get some other opinions and maybe get some other options.
Years ago I had a Norelco electric shaver but became unhappy with it. I couldn't get a decent close shave. So, I switched to razors and am now using the Gillette Sensor. While I happy with the shave I've ealized I'm spending a king's ransom on blades. Anyone know of a decent electric razor? Or, where do you get your blades? Because I just paid $25.00 for 8 blades, and that's just fucking crazy.

The Gillette Fusion is the best(in my opinion)I have a pretty nasty scar where I had a steel plate put in my jaw so I need the manueverability.

F_S Has Tried Electric Razors And Keeps A Norelco In His Car For Social Emergencies.
However, He HATES Electric: It Is NEVER As Close A Shave As A Blade And Always Itchy And Uncomfortable.
Here Is What Works For F_S:
1. Moisten Beard With Hot Water, And Put On Original Noxzema Shave Cream In The White Can.
2. Leave Shave Cream On For About 3-4 Minutes So It Really Soften Things Up.
3. Shave With A Gillette Good News Disposable Plastic Razor. F_S Has Tried Them All And This Is The Best By Far.
4. Rinse Face And Dry.
5. Smile At The Mirror.
(Note: You Get About 3 Good Shaves From Each Disposable Razor.)

I ve never been able to deal with electric razors. Seems to take forever and not as close a shave. Ive used Gillette Atra Plus for years. Combines price with close shave. Ive had the same handle ~20 years Im Irish so I don't have a real thick Italian beard so I can't complain about much. I have never used shaving cream either that shits for pussys

I agree with the Mach3 and shaving everyday. the longer you let the hair get, the more irritated you are going to be.
I shave in the shower, using a shower mirror. it gives me the closest shave and by far the least irritation, as well as really easy cleanup.
Also make sure you change the blade kind of often, a dull blade gives me the worst razor burn.
I shave with the grain, and then I go back, relather, and go against the grain to get a close shave. my beard grows fast, so if i did not do this, i have a shadow in a few hours.

I've also been using the same Gillette Atra Plus handle I got for free when I checked into the dorms my freshman year of college (19 years ago). Still works great and you can get generic replacement blades cheap.
However, I use fancy shaving cream from American Crew ($10/tube), which I guess makes me even more of a pussy than those who use traditional shaving cream.

I shave with a Mach 3 in the shower every morning. I don't go for any special creams or anything. I shave by feel and then double check in the mirror when I get out.
I have also been known to dry shave in the car on the way to work a few times.

Mach 3 is the next best thing to a straight razor. My last girlfriend worked in a barber shop and she had a straight razor and used the real deal, warm shaving cream. She was really good at it but I couldn't trust my own hands to operate a straight razor.
I agree with Smails that razors are quite a rip off, I think I paid $18 for five Mach 3 razors the last time I bought some. That adds up but I think I probably only use 10-12 razors in a year.

I use Mach 3 and always have. I never tried an electric.
I only shave once a week. I shave Sunday night to be fresh for the beginning of the week of work. I dont give myself enough time and I'm not awake enough to do it in the morning. By Friday in work, I look like a scruffbag but who cares. Sometimes I shave again on Friday before going out if I have plans for the weekend but then I do it again on Sunday night for the work week.
I dont go through razors that quick since I dont shave a lot.

oh i love talking shaving here is what I do and my routine:
First like F_S i use hot water to moisten my face
then I use this brush:
http://www.classicshaving.com/i/Rooney/0313.jpg
Remember always use Badger bristles in a brush they are the best around.
I then use this shaving cream:
http://www.qedusa.com/productimages/GTviolet.jpg
I like Geo F. Trumper and I also love Taylor of Old Bond Street.
I then use this razor:
http://www.classicshaving.com/i/Merkur/33c.jpg
I prefer the hefty because it has a great weight to the razor and feels sturdy in your hand.
Then when shaving, I shave in all down strokes never against the hair. Then I wash face with nice cool water, then I lather face once again with the cream and shave in all up strokes never with the hair.
Yes it is a very long procedure but I only have to shave twice a week. If i had to shave every day I would only shave in down strokes and skip the last part, the last part is only if I want an unbelievably close shave.
Most of the stuff I use I got either from my dad as a present or bought them off classicshaving.com it is a great website.
My way is much longer then most but it gives a great shave, feels awesome and I was taught by my dad and it is how he shaved everyday so it just stuck with me.

i use a mach 3 blade. electric razors rip my face to shreds, i can't use them.
use the fusion gel, but when i need a good shave i use the fancy stuff from kiehls that my brother got me as a gift.
i always shave in the shower after i scrub my face with the kiehls face wash.
then use a aloe face lotion from kiehls when im done.
i usually shave 3-4 times a week, even though i could do it everyday. when i do it everyday, it gets really irritated.
i highly recommend anything by kiehls, great stuff.

I'm blessed not to have to shave every day or even every month. I have red hair and a light beard so I usually just knock the ol beard down with a triimer with no guard. If and when I actually shave, I hit it with the clippers, the with the Braun electric then with a Gillette whatever model my wife is using at the time.

I use the newer Norelco electrics during the week. On the weekends I use the Gillete Fusion.
I also do not regularly use shaving cream, I usually use a mild hand soap and never have any problems. Once in a while though, I will try the old fashioned shaving cream.
I also keep one Noreclo electric shaver in each of my cars.

i've used soap and a brush since my early-mid-20s. i've used l'occitane shaving soap (in their travel case...keeps it clean and handy) except for like the first 2 years of this time. i use a mach3 as many others do. i'd always wanted to work up the courage to get a straight razor, then i saw some segment on a morning talk show and they had an old italian barber come out and shave some guy and he used like a sensor excel or such. the host said they were surprised by this. the barber said any twin blade was just a ton better shave than a straight razor. i trusted him and never considered the straight razor again.

Sailor, what i use is a safety razor its the same thing as a mach or a sensor but its just the blade minus the 4 blades and line of aloe or whatever.
Plus you can buy a pack of blades for like 10 for $5 its awesome.
A straight razor is the razor that opens up, mine is just a normal safety razor.

gillette sensor excel - 2 blades - lasts two shaves and in the middle of the 3rd shave i usually change it cause it's pulling
i like to shave down and then shave up to get every little stubble. my braun electric shaver has a moustache and sideburn trimmer for balls-on accurate straight cuts/edgings. i'll shave the back of my neck 'dry' like every 3rd shave
i also have shears and 'no lie' my daughter just sheared all the hair off my back and the back of my upper arms, she's a trooper. i should nair it now to really get it baby smooth but too much work!

I'm not a big fan of shaving, so it 's always nice to find something that makes the process more pleasant. I got a sampler from The Art of Shaving (http://www.theartofshaving.com/taos6/home.php) that promised the perfect shave. It includes a pre-shave oil, shaving lotion, a brush and after-shave lotion. I tried it. It wasn't bad. It didn't blow me away, but it seemed better than shaving with your basic drugstore shaving cream. The sampler came with a $25 off coupon for one of their full-size kits so I went to their website to check one out. The problem is that the full-size kits are $100, which seems kind of exorbitant, especially since the kit was nice but not that much better than your basic shaving products. Does anyone use this stuff? I'm sure there are some people that swear by it. What do you use if not this stuff?
I do like this (http://www.lushusa.com/shop/products/face/shaving-creams/ambrosia) an awful lot. It's the best shaving lotion I've ever used.

Someone I work with recently bought a $200 razor/brush/stand kit from them - it got rave reviews. Then again the user is sort of prissy/fastidious type.
IIRC, the razors use off the shelf Gillette type blade inserts, so aside from the thing having more heft I'm not sure how much better the razor handle is.
