You can use any criteria you'd like. Here's what I based it on: 1) I had to have seen it for the first time during my highschool years in the 80s (my comedically impressionable years). 2) Chock full of funny lines that my friends and I repeat to each other until this day.

1) Caddyshack
2) Strange Brew
3) The Jerk
4) Stripes
5) Blazing Saddles

I need to think about it but number one on my list will probably be Dr. Strangelove. Might be the funniest and smartest comedy ever made. Not many movies get funnier the more you watch it, or funnier the older you get but this one does.

And no one mentioned Monty Python and the Holy Grail yet? Even though I prefer Life of Brian overall, I have to throw it to Holy Grail. Definitive, brilliant, hilarious, so many memorable moments, a perfect comedy.

Planes, trains and automobiles, may be the funniest movie ever made. I have watched that movie well over 30 times, and I still manage to laugh at almost every joke.

My list.

Planes, trains, and automobiles
Groundhog Day
Ace ventura: pet detective
Midnight Run
and lastly, this ones kinda silly but, The Golden Child, always cracks me up. I don't know why, I think that was eddie murphy's funniest movie.

Lotsa good uns. Good calls on Dr. Strangelove and Blazing Saddles.

I have to throw in Breaking Away (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0078902/) in my honorable mentions, while not a pure comedy, it is hilarious. Paul Dooley as the dad is a fucking riot.

I love a LOT of the movies people have been picking as much any movie on this list, but I think it has to be about the best 5 I've seen in one post. If I sat down and watched all 5 of these back to back, I think I'd literally die of laughter.

I only hate 2 actors (that I can think of)
Nick Cage
Jaquin Phoenix

I have seen a lot of their movies and like most of them, except for their parts. Something about the 2 of them make me want to break something

As for comedies there are so many that I cant think straight. No way I can list my top 5 but a few

Tommy Boy
Black Sheep
Rush Hour
Fletch
Forrest Gump (it had everything drama, comedy, history but the comedy was brilliant)
fast times

"okay theeen"

hear ya on Cage. but i always loved raising arizona because it has perfect timing- its like a cartoon.

watch the scene where hal's trying to steal the kid...movement and composition just seems so right. testament to joel cohen's directing talents.

plus, one of the best intros in movie histroy. by the time that yodelling music kicks in- you have yourself one of the greatest setups EVER.

My First Five- probably going to be changed

* Dr. Strangelove- funnier the mosre you watch it, the older you get and is just so smart on its own
* Monty Python and the Holy Grail- though I prefer Life of Brian, Grail is quite possibly the perrfect movie comedy (though I wouldn't argue with any Python film on this list.)
* The Big Lebowski
* A Fish Called Wanda- I haven't seen it in awhile but I remember thinking it was ridiculously funny. And since no one else mentioned it, I like being cool and different.
* Billy Madison- I know I lost all credibility with this bullet and it's probably the most likely to be changed. But I did want to include just a fun, zany, wacky, senseless comedy. And I love Caddyshack and Animal House and PCU but maybe it's my age but there is just so much hilarity in Billy Madison that, at least for me, the movie is up there on my personal list.

Of course there are movies I want to put on the list but no room. I wish I was more learned in stuff like Marx Brothers or Chaplin/Keaton (who was better) so I can act all hoity toity and say 'Oh, I prefer The General peons or you're John Belushi holds nothing on Fatty Arbuckle." But I don't so fuck it.

Honorable mentions (that haven't been mentioned by many people before me): The Graduate, the Parker/Stone films (I think the hardest I ever laughed in a movie theater was the first time Matt Damon showed up in TAWP); Woody Allen; The Producers (oriignal); The Jerk and many, many others. FUCK! I forgot the Kaufman films, I really need to re-think this.

- Midnight Run

I don't think enough people have seen this movie and not just because I stole my name from one of the characters. If you ask people about Robert Deniro and comedy, unfortunately most people only know Meet the Parents. Midnight Run is not only DeNiro's best comedy, it is one of his best movies period.

There was a period when I was young where I watched this movie at least once a month with my father, and ALWAYS when my sister's godfather came over to visit. It got to a point where we knew not only the dialogue but every editing mistake.

After all that, it's not my number 1. Here's my list:

1. The Big Lebowski
2. Midnight Run
3. Best in Show
4. King of Comedy - Stephen Chow
5. Super Troopers (on the strength of the first 15 minutes alone)

I've seen a couple of classics recently that haven't been mentioned but have held up better than I'd have expected:

Every Which Way But Loose - It's edgier than I remember and I still love the Black Widows. (whenever I see a biker-type dude that saxaphone theme song pops into my head and I giggle) and Ruth Gordon. It was on in the middle of the night twice in one week when I was in Cambodia and I watched it both times. It'd be in my top 20.

The original Police Academy. There's alot of stupid laughs and a couple of huge gags that are classics - the hooker under the podium and the Commendant's reaction afterwards, and the running Blue Oyster Bar gag. That's top 15 I think.

A couple of classics: Arsenic and Old Lace. I haven't seen it in too long but that's just a brilliantly written comedy that I'd buy in a heartbead if I could find it on the road.

The Odd Couple and Grumpy Old Men. Jack Lemmon and Walter Matheau = pure gold.

I'd have to put something from the Stooges and W.C. Fields for a top 20 list.

Edit: Uncle Buck!
