The racism talk is spreading like a wild fire, I wonder how long it will take until mainstream media picks up on it and Al Sharpton is out protesting the next installment of the Resident Evil series.

The Village Voice:
http://www.ronfez.net/forums/newthread.php?do=newthread&f=13

But looking again at the trailer, I see a different message: it’s not just that these zombies are black, but that the uninfected black villagers are zombie-like too. See all those spooky shots of the villagers before they get infected? It’s as if race itself were a disease. The white protagonist has to fight back or be infected.

And that’s the other issue with setting a zombie movie in Africa. The whole idea of zombies is based on our fear of contamination. Get bitten by a zombie, or just drop a tiny bit of undead blood in an open wound, and you’re a goner. Soon you too will carry the disease of the living dead.

Some site name Black Looks:
http://www.blacklooks.org/2007/07/resident_evil_5.html

This is problematic on so many levels, including the depiction of Black people as inhuman savages, the killing of Black people by a white man in military clothing, and the fact that this video game is marketed to children and young adults. Start them young… fearing, hating, and destroying Black people.

Some other site:
http://microscopiq.com/2007/07/blackface-goes-hd/

But perhaps the most troubling part is that these scenes seem to be set in Africa; the “dark continent.” With all the positive steps being taken of late to raise awareness of the good things happening in Africa as well as the urgent need in some parts of the continent, we really can’t afford this kind of step back. We need to find ways to humanize Africans, not dehumanize them.

Oof.

How useless. For a decade or something we have been shooting up white zombies. In RE4 we went to Europe and shot up Spanish zombies. Now we happen to go to a black land (I dont think any mention has ever been made of it being in Africa. For all we know it could be in Hati or Jamacia) and the fury has started. I can only imagine this nothingness hype growing and gaining speed like every racism snowball does.

But besides all that, the trailer does look pretty awesome.

This is ridiculous! They are freaking Zombies and are in Africa - of course they are going to be Black. WTF is wrong with that? IT'S A GAME!

The only malicious part is that Zombies are killed - it is only a coincidence that they are Black and that is due to location (Africa).

It would be something completely different if they were in Philadelphia and ONLY Black people were infected. That could be considered racist.

i dont think its racist at all. i say that cuz theyve been killing nothing but white zombies since 1997. that being said, the al sharptons, jesse jacksons and naacp's of the world will be all over it, ignoring the facts and riling up the media about "the black community's outrage" and it will probably never be released.

I loved Resident Evil 4 and just finished beating it again on my wii. RE5 is one of the reasons I plan to get a PS3 in the next 6-8 months. I have no problem with the race thing. I would kill zombies from any race and the way capcom is going with this series I will be abe to. So bring them on!
You gotta admit that this is scary (http://media.ps3.ign.com/media/734/734381/img_4743057.html)

This statement is sooo rascisct its kind of funny. To assume that everyone in Africa is black is a racially ignorant stereotype, thats like saying everyone in Ireland is white.

Coincidence...or not so subtle portrayal of race/class war between white/black & living/dead?

How do you mean that Moe? Do you think the game is racist or that the reaction people are having to the game is breeding/continuing racism? I don't understand your comment.

Lots of blogs popping up on the internet about resident evil 5 and the blackness of the zombies. The game takes place in Africa and the good guy is white. The way things are now away a days the small interest groups could stop this game from coming to the states based off of that.

example of one.

Honestly, I'd bet good money the game company had an idea that a stink would be raised over this. Video game companies tend to thrive on this kind of negative publicity. They likely could have avoided the whole mess by making the character you play black as well, but NOBODY thought of that along the way?

I'm not saying it's not ridiculous that people are coming down on a freakin' zombie video game, but I have little doubt that the people behind the game are likely stitching some extra big pockets and smiling with glee.

American companies (Rockstar) do but this is Capcom and they are quite rooted in Japan, Resident Evil has always been a popular series, if they did something to purposely give it a bad press wrap I would think it would cause dishonor and what have you. Also since it's a Japanese game first it will be coming out there first and I doubt anyone will give a hoot about the color of everyone's skin. And making the lead black would defeat the whole purpose of bringing back a main character from previous games.

Again, you have got to be kidding me.

I know that not every person in Africa is Black but the grand majority of the population is, especially in the setting they are using for the game. They are in an area that has a predominantly Black population, thus the Zombies are predominantly black people. How is that racist?

As another person pointed out earlier, one of the earlier games had action in Spain so you were killing a lot of Spanish Zombies. It isn't because people are racist and hate Spaniards, it's because the population was Spanish and became Zombies.

This is artificial bullshit. It's a game about killing Zombies, not a comment on race relations or geo-political social structure.

I'm sorry, what are those publications carrying who claiming racism about what?

I want to get on the outrage bandwagon here too but I've never heard of the people who we're all outraged about. I've only even heard about one publication linked to and I don't give a rat's dick about what it publishes the rest of the year so why are we giving a fuck now? What group of people are they supposed to represent to me now? Help me out somone! The herd is moving somewhere and I want to come along I just don't understand the instructions! Help me! B-a-a-a-a-a! B-a-a-a-a-a! B-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a!

"Cause dishonor?" Yeah, samurais are running Capcom.

Bottom line, this is a global business where gore and headlines sell more copies. We could easily see a similar uproar in Europe, too. I'm not saying they necessarily sought out to raise some shit, but I doubt they're too worried about it.
