I think it was Opie said something about greyhounds on K-roc show today. I didn't quite catch all of it, but it was pretty negative. If he thinks adopting retired greyhounds is not a good thing he is completely wrong. It might be important to point out that the WJFK stream actually has an 'adopt a retired racer' commercials which plays during their show (!).

I adopted my Zuni in January and she's a phenomenal pet. She loves all people, and has a overall great dispostion. She loves to run, but she loves a normal walk, and loves to sleep most of all. In short--she's a dog, and she acts like a dog, she just can't ever be off a leash unless it's a fenced in area. But that's true for all the sighthounds--Whippes, Ibizan and Pharoh hounds, Borzois, and Afghan Hounds. I even live in the city and it hasn't been a problem. People refer to them as 45 mph couch potatos.

It was opinions that greyhounds don't make good pets that resulted in almost all greyhounds being put down when their careers were over (unitl somewhere around 15 years ago). Sorry to rant, but I really think he is doing to a disservice to people who are out there volunteering time and money just to find each retired dog a home.

One of the writers of the Simpsons does have a greyhound, a lot of things from the show have rung true since I adopted Zuni.

It wasn't much really, kinda tucked in the middle of the Michael Vick conversation. Something about being annoyed about someone calling them 'rescued.' Most folks I know called them retired, but their are some PETA loving folks out there with a extreme dislike of racing who feel their have rescued their hounds, I guess. He was probably just trying to be funny or something.

I like Italian greyhounds much better. They are 1/4 the size and are great with kids. I had big dogs my whole life and now we have no dog. But if I ever get a dog again I/m getting a small dog.

I like Grayhounds

One of the worst things I ever saw was on Bryant Gumbel Real Sports. They show what happens to greyhounds who lose more than 5 races in a row. They euthenize them and toss them in dumpsters, also have mass graves in Hayseed Backyards

i consider myself close to heartless, but I was brought to a tear or 2

The reason you heard Opie saying that is because he IS A DICK. They have also spent a ton of time making fun of the Michael Vick thing.

One more reason to turn the dial. Oh yeah, on top of the racism, mean spirited other shit they do.

BTW, if my wife would let me I would rescue every stray animal I laid my eyes on.

Maybe I should look for a grey hound rescue in my area.

Cute dog! Now that I think of it, I don't know if I've even seen a greyhound before. I'm not saying I don't know what they are. I just can't think of any time when I've seen one.

Oh if I had the space I would have a bunch of them. When I lived in Halifax, the mall I worked in had a community service booth that groups could use to sell tickets etc. At least once every 3 months or so the Greyhound Adoption Group in the city would come in and set up. There were always 3 or 4 greyhounds there hanging out. I used to love to go down there on my break and just hang out with them. They LOVE human contact. What i remember the most is if they were standing up and you went over to pat them they would come close and actually lean their body weight on you while you were patting them.
I always wanted one of my own to snuggle up with on the couch. Maybe someday.

It's not so much that they are prone to bolt, it's just when they do, you're never going to catch them. Zuni did managed to get of leash in the park, but when I stopped chasing her she came back to me. I consider myself pretty lucky.

I think they've come a long way with adoption, so this kind of thing is rare, but it seems they do still put down a lot, they just find ways to hide it. My Zuni didn't win a single race, and she entered 19 races at seabrook track in New Hampshire--and she's living and breathing... So I think win or die is a thing of the past to a certain extent.

Zuni is not a 'leaner,' but she absolutly loves people, and will just be so happy with anyone that gives her attention. I've been taking her to events so she can win over people thinking about adopting.

Mendy has had two greyhounds since 1990
Mourne Breeze- 1987-2001
Fort White 1997-
They are gentle giants, great with kids and don't need as much running room as you think.
THey have been bred for 3000 years. No real physical defects, except fro a little arthritis in the joints as they get older.

Florida is big on greyhound racing. It was pretty bad especially in the 70's and 80's for the dogs when they couldn't race anymore. I think the industry has tried to clean up the image and treat the dogs a little better. Its definitely a good thing when people adopt the animals. On the other hand I can't get too outraged about dogs when there is so much going on with people being treated like crap on every continent.

My upstairs neighbors have two grayhounds. I love them! they are the dumbest dogs ever but so friendly. They dont seem to be very active either. I've heard that grayhounds are good for apartments because they are bred to have a good disposition while penned up.

My Zuni is quite smart, actually. I think it's the males mostly who are big and dumb.

I dog sat for a friend's Greyhound once. The fucker ran circles around my yard and ruined my grass for about two months. He was nice, but never again will he blaze around in my backyard!
