OK. Let me rephrase that in case my wife should ever read this. My wife is from New Jersey and only went to Penn State for two years. We both grew up across the river from NYC so our entertainment options were limitless. When I went up to visit her in PA it was my impression that the vast majority of girls there were hayseed farmgirls. They came from small towns with absolutely no nightlife. Consequently, when they got their "freedom" they drank to excess and fucked like rabbits.

He's a Maryland guy, and quite upset that PSU can go across the Mason-Dixon line and get any player they want from down here. Maryland then has to get players from Long Island and a few from Florida that aren't offered ships by the big 3.

Also check the all-time PSU vs Maryland record in football. It makes ND-Navy look even-sided. The last game the teams played was 70-7 and has been described as 'not as close as the score indicated.'

1) We get all our players from Jersey....if youre talking about D Williams, we lost him cause years ago the University laid off his dad (his mom still works there tho). Besides, we had no trouble getting Jeremy Ricker and Jordan Steffy from PA

2) Our football program for YEARS was terrible...It was a powerhouse in the 50s, but its just now getting back on track in the last 6 years. And since those pussies at PSU joined the Big 10, they don't play any regional teams any more, so there's no way to fix that

3) How's that basketball program there at Penn State?

I'm referring to a little before the last 6 years and Derrick Williams (who isn't exactly lived up to the #1 recruit in the nation just yet).

I'm talking about Richie Anderson, Jim Nelson, Kevin Thompson and Zack Mills (just off the top of my head). Not to mention the class two years ago when we took 8 or 9 players from the Old Line State--AJ Wallace (future all-american and future 1st round draft pick at CB), Aaron Maybin, Bani Gbaynu, JB Walton, the list goes on...

And you probably aren't old enough to remember, but MD had decent teams in the eighties with Boomer Esiasan and Neil O'Donnell (both from LI). Neither every beat PSU in the careers.

We're playing traditional rivals these days--Notre Dame, Syracuse, Nebraska, Miami... We had Alabama scheduled but the backed out for whatever reason.

Passably decent....that's about it. Even the Reich and Esiason teams weren't very good (even though they had the biggest comeback ever in the history of college football during the Reich era). And any momentum they had in the 80s was killed by the Bias scandal...

Remember also that DUKE won the ACC title in 1989. Until FSU came in the early 90s, the ACC was strictly a basketball conference (FSU didn't lose a GAME in conference for almost seven (7) years until they finally crapped the bed in Charlottesville in 1995). With the addition of Miami, BC, and VPI, the conference is slowly turning into a football conference, but its still for the most part a basketball conference. And those three programs they added have decent basketball programs to go along with their big time football programs

We've only really started to be viable again as a football program since 2001 when they hired Ralph Friedgen, when they came out of nowhere to win the ACC title.

We're not at the level of PSU yet for those reasons, but we're getting there. We're in a major conference, we have a great location, great facilities, and theyre busy expanding the Byrd, so I think we'll be making a lot more noise on the national scene in the next few years

Aj Wallace was the number one cornerback recruit in the nation, runs a legit 4.3. I don't care if you have a team of ten all-acc freshman in the secondary--you recruit him and you recruit him hard. He was so fast they put him in at WR and ran end-arounds--his first carry was something like a 77 yard touchdown. And i hesitate to bring it up, but Maryland seemed to want that Antonio Logan-El guy (he was clearly not all he should have been, he's already transfered down to Delaware or Delaware St or something).

Doesn't everybody credit MD early 2000's sucess to Vanderlinden's recruits? He probably didn't get the shot he deserved, he's done one hell of a job with our Linebackers.

Not technically Vanderlinden's recruits....a lot of those came from Mike Locksley (who served in both the Friedgen and Vanderlinden eras), who's now up at Illinois (and its no shocker that the Illini are getting a LOT of recruits from this area like Aurrelious Benn). Vanderlinden was just a terrible coach.

Ralph has brought in a LOT of good players over his time here, and even if those were Vanderlinden's players, he still won with them, which was something Vanderlinden never did. And with the continued upgrading of the facilities and the program, plus Friedgen's connections to the NFL (was San Diego's OC during their super bowl run), its only going trend upward, and it has already...Scott McBrien led to Josh Portis...EJ Henderson led to Shawne Merriman....Chris Downs and Bruce Perry led to Keon Lattimore and Lance Ball

I am getting a bit off subject here, but I was drawn in by El Mudo and Pepperjacks replies. As an avid college sports fan in the mid-Atlantic, I follow and root for both of your schools except for the few times they face the Hokies. The Terps are slowing becoming a dominant force in the ACC - which I have to disagree with El Mudo, the ACC is not slowly becoming a football powerhouse, they are a power house - and this year they can definitely compete in the Atlantic division.
Still can't get over PSU's lost chance at a national title when they were jobbed in the Mich. Game.

As of Monday's press conference, the grand jury presentment identified eight separate victims, six of whom were known to prosecutors. Since the Attorney General asked further victims to come forward and publicized a phone number to call, the number of reported victims has "more than doubled in the past day, and is closer to 20 victims."

That's reported by FOX 29 in Philadelphia, on top of a verified ninth victim who has already spoken with authorities. That man, now in his 20s, claims he met Jerry Sandusky through The Second Mile .

How many more are there who are too ashamed, embarrassed, don't want their family and friends to know or have just moved on in their life? I was listening to Mike Francesa yesterday and he was talking about how Sandusky's wife called a victim to get him not to talk.

Went to the authorities and what not. If 2 days passed and that dirtbag wasn't in cuffs. I make sure he us.

NOT AS LATE AS LAST WEEK ALLOW HIM ON CAMPUS

Allowing Paterno to retire at the end of the season just reinforces the impression the University isn't serious about this. This is not going to get better on its own.

I get the feeling that a lot of people think that Paterno was personally responsible for allowing Sandusky on campus after he was investigated, that all the abuse happened on campus, and that he was given access to the locker rooms by Paterno who had full knowledge of what he was doing down there. That's not the case at all. I don't think that Paterno had ANY say in the matter of letting Sandusky on campus, let alone even knew how often he was there. The man is in charge of a Nationally viewed Div 1 college football team....how much time do you think you'd have to keep tabs on who's coming and going on campus? Paterno was made aware of an incident by a graduate assistant involving his best friend who he trusted. He notified the AD and there was a meeting a few days later that Paterno was not involved in. We have no idea what the context of the conversation was with the grad assistant and Paterno. We have no idea what was discussed in the meeting that Paterno wasn't a part of. There is all this hate for Paterno now and nobody is saying a word about the Grad Assistant, the AD, or even Sandusky. But that's the way it goes because Paterno is recognizable, and familiar. He's the face of Penn St. so dump it all in his lap. I don't buy it for a second.

I refuse to demonize a man who did what he thought was the right thing to do at the time, only to find out almost a decade later that he was wrong, and that the consequences were way, way more serious than he could have possibly imagined.

THEY SHOULD SHUT THE ENTIRE PROGRAM DOWN for allowing this to happen. Because of ALL who are responsible. ALL OF THEM ARE SCUMBAGS. Better to just wash away the program. It needs to go now. All the other acts that Sandusky is being charged with occurred at his non-profit center.

why do you keep bringing it back to paterno? You think cause im sayin shut down the program that its an idictment of just paterno? Also, if you bothered to read, he is being charged with 8. So many more have come forward the number is actually up around 20. They caught him TWICE. One time, he admitted to a mother he mighta touched her kid, he wasnt sure. They caught on in 98 and again in 02. And for the last 9 years, no one did anything about it while he continued to do it more.

Just announced his intention to retire at end of season. We'll see if he makes to then. I'd bet he will.

If they are gonna fire him why wait even 1 more minute never mind game ?

His actions, or rather inactions, have made it so that he shouldn't be allowed to go out on his own terms.

I keep hearing that he's been so good all along and we should give him the respect but how the hell do we know that " all along " he hasn't been shuffling and hiding shit for the sake of his program.

Gutter and Snoogans - you are both right. Although you jumped into insult mode pretty fast there Snoogans when it was unnecessary and uncalled for.

Gutter's right about the focus on Paterno because he is the face of the team and right now he's getting more frowned upon than Sandusky.

Snoogans' right about the entire program. It should be shut down because they chose to protect the brand. They chose money over people.

A DECADE has gone by and Paterno knew this guy was still working a football program with kids and he did nothing but report it up the chain who covered it up. That's his crime.

He wanted to do something good? "I'm not stepping onto the field until that man is arrested." In 1998. The scandal would have passed. Then he would have gone out a hero.

I agree with Kevin and A.J.'s assessment on this:

This entire program needs to be shut down.

You can't allow a sick bastard like Sandusky continue to ruin lives for years ands be allowed to exist.

I don't care how long he has been there and what he has done, this old douchebag should not be allowed to retire at the end of the year and leave on his terms. Pack your shit up today and get the fuck out.

At worst, he did the bare minimum to stop it when he found out about it. Which, again, shows how little control he had with this team.

Paterno, his assistants and the administration ALL are responsible for this.

And this will probably effect all of College Football too. As it should. They're protected because they make so much money. More scandals will come out.

Mike McQueary, the then-graduate assistant and current wide receivers coach who testified he saw Jerry Sandusky raping a boy in the shower, has had "no change" in his job status, Surma said. Paterno also was told of the board's decision over the phone.

WTF?

How does this douche get to keep his job?

Might as well leave everyone in.

it really is sick. I would get rid of every single person who knew anything about anything goin on and maybe even people that are strongly suspected to know anything, IE other coaches who had to have caught on or heard stories about what was reported. No way you can be a coach in there and not find out anything. I dont believe thats possible

Isn't he the only one who's an actual coach (since Paterno was a figurehead)? If I'm right about that, I'm thinking they are still more worried about the team winning games for now. They'll probably axe him after they find a replacement. I may be way off, though. I know very little about college football. In any case, even though they finally fired Paterno and the Prez, the board of trustees is still showing they have their heads up their asses, and only care about winning.

which is exactly why the program should be shut down. I say forever, if you wanna say 5 years just to completely refresh it, i can understand that. Then it wouldnt be any of these people. But if its forever, fine by me. it sucks for the seniors to miss their last 3 games. But all the other kids would be free to go to another school without having to sit out a year.

He's a fucking WR coach. He puts about as much into the actual game plan as the cheerleaders.

No doubt in my mind a job was given to him for his silence.

Also, something that may play into this is that McQueary and Sandusky had personal issues before he saw what happened.

That being said, if you saw the press conference with the guy who fired him last night, I wasn't sure if it was reporters asking that poor bastard questions or students, because ALL of the questions were "Poor Joe, why are you making him a scapegoat"?If it was reporters , they are all unprofessional assholes. At worst, he did the bare minimum to stop it when he found out about it. Which, again, shows how little control he had with this team.

Paterno, his assistants and the administration ALL are responsible for this.

I believe his inaction more showed how much he and the PSU brass overvalued the school's legacy, football program and of course, his own legend. The guy is clearly a selfish asshole who looked the other way and hoped it would go away, all the time claiming to have great integrity compared to other coaches, programs and schools bc they didn't ever pay off kids to come there and play. No hats in the buildings and other rules based on respect, but yah, kid raping in the showers...look the other way and act like it didn't even happen in the end. Hypocrite, dangerous, disgusting, deplorable......need I go on?

There is little debate on his passive in involvement here. I think he has plenty of power via his name alone on that campus and always did in terms of admin and personnel. Sure he doesn't make the calls at all points on the field, but overall, he was still VERY MUCH in control of the program in my mind. My buddy played there 5 years (red shirted) and left RIGHT before the first incident we have heard of 1997 grad. He's leveled by this and always stated Joe was completely in control at that point when I would talk about it even up to recent times.

I agree with this part of your argument, but not the fact that Paterno is under more attack overall. In reality, the fact he refused to step down immediately and take blame for his part in this brought ire he surely deserved, but it's bc everyone with a brain KNOWS Sandusky is completely destroyed and should never be free again or worse.

Truth be told, the guy shouldn't even get offered bail. He has been ordered not to be alone unsupervised with his own fucking grandkids. So I ask you, how is it he's not a risk to the public, not so much a flight risk. However, I wouldn't even rule out a white bronco type situation or suicide.

Wow... a LOT of people should burn for this. Especially every public official who knew but waited for their precious JoPa to get his winning number. Pathetic.

Did Penn State not make an issue of Sandusky's alleged behavior in 1998 in exchange for him walking away from the program at an age premature for most coaches? Did Penn State's considerable influence help get Sandusky off the hook?
Don't kid yourself. That could happen. Don't underestimate the power of Paterno and Penn State in central Pennsylvania when it comes to politicians, the police and the media.

Here's Paterno's statement:

"I am disappointed with the Board of Trustees' decision, but I have to accept it.

A tragedy occurred, and we all have to have patience to let the legal process proceed. I appreciate the outpouring of support but want to emphasize that everyone should remain calm and please respect the university, its property and all that we value.

I have been incredibly blessed to spend my entire career working with people I love. I am grateful beyond words to all of the coaches, players and staff who have been a part of this program. And to all of our fans and supporters, my family and I will be forever in your debt."

He still doesn't get it (or even recognize his complicity). At a MINIMUM he should have been fired when this went to the Grand Jury.

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -- Authorities investigating sex abuse allegations against former Penn State assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky are examining the role of other parties not yet charged in the case whose actions, or lack thereof, may have delayed intervention by law enforcement authorities.

One guy was like ' Don't you think you owed him the courtersy of telling him in person and not over the phone ? "

The board guy should've said , " Don't you think he owed the victims the courtesy of following up on accusations ? "

These stsudents saying " I love you. " and " We owe you so much. "

Really ??

Why do you owe him anything ? Because he won a few games. Get real.

He wouldn't have pissed on you if you were on fire if it didn't help his team/brand.

He's getting credit for how the school does academically ?

How in the hell did he help that other than by maybe brining in a few more dollars ?

I'm sure he never directly impacted the academics of that school.

Just when you think that this can't get any more fucked up and sick:

In April, Pittsburgh radio host Mark Madden wrote a story revealing Penn State for much of the cover-up of Jerry Sandusky's alleged child rape that has been exposed in the past week. While it didn't raise many eyebrows back then, six months later it looks to be incredibly accurate.
On Thursday morning, just hours after legendary head coach Joe Paterno and university president Graham Spanier were fired by the school's board of trustees, Madden was asked on The Dennis and Callahan Show what he believes the next piece of news will be.
What he said was twice as shocking as anything that's been released thus far.
"I can give you a rumor and I can give you something I think might happen," Madden told John Dennis and Gerry Callahan. "I hear there's a rumor that there will be a more shocking development from the Second Mile Foundation -- and hold on to your stomachs, boys, this is gross, I will use the only language I can -- that Jerry Sandusky and Second Mile were pimping out young boys to rich donors. That was being investigated by two prominent columnists even as I speak."

If this is true..holy shit.

It was a mistake to make the announcement at 10pm last night. They should have made it this morning. Instead they announced it to a bunch of kids who were up anyway, most likely partying anyway, and instantly evolved into mob mentality. Mark Madden was accurately described as a "professional troll" by Barry Petchesky. Of course, a Deadspin guy using this term is kind of rich, but remember: Mark Madden was a fucking dirt sheet writer for WCW back in the day, and WCW fired him because he was an asshole.

I'm going to reserve comment on the new allegations, but there was a major, major reason why people didn't jump on Madden's story when he wrote it back in April - he doesn't have a shitload of credibility. Blind squirrel finding a nut, as it were.

How long until some politicians start passing more laws to "protect the children"?

As if 10 more years added on to a life sentence makes a dif. Now you get life + 10 years. That'll make 'em stop.

I bet Sandusky jerked off 20 times already in jail. Oh WAIT He's NOT in jail? He's HOME? He needs to be on a suicide watch cell. He shouldn't be allowed to get off with a quick suicide. He needs years of black cock therapy in jail.

Everyone notices McQueary on the field, but he doesn't get the recognition he deserves. Please suggest this page to all your friends. With your help, we can make this one ginger feel loved.

I heard that the Board has now asked MacQuery to not even go to the game based on the number of threats he's gotten. As of last night they just requested that he stay in the booth upstairs.

Two things that I've been thinking :

- What's the deal w/ MacQuery's dad ? Was he a coach/on staff ?
- Why the hell is he getting a pass if his son told him the story before he told Paternon ?
- Even if he didn't work for the school he still knew there was an issue that his son told him about and could probably tell that nothing had happened.

With regards to the DA that went missing it's quite possible there was another case, totally unrealted, that might've been what got him killed ( if that's even what happened ). Wasn't it 7 years between when he decided not to pursue the charges and when he disappeared ?

they reported that the last searches done from the DAs home computer were about how to wreck a hard drive. then he disappeared and they found his HD in the river wrecked a few months later. Seems like he was into something he was afraid would get out.

Id guess he is probably hiding out somewhere or killed himself

Soooo... we're supposed to believe that he LIED to the Grand Jury? Because their report says that he testified that he saw them, and they saw him, and that was it, before he ran back to his office, and then to his daddy.

I'm not buying it. Sounds like "cover your ass" mode.

And even if he did "try to stop" that incident, he was ok with continuing to work for Penn State knowing they covered this up, and he had no problem passing someone in the hallway on a regular basis after watching him sodomize a 10 year old boy.

Amendola represented a 16-year-old girl then known as Mary Iavasile when she filed an emancipation petition in September 1996. The emancipation petition said the girl had graduated from high school in two years with a 3.69 GPA and held a fulltime job at Amendola's law office.

The girl gave birth to Amendola's child when she was 17 years old, her mother, Janet Iavasile, said. Amendola would have been about 49 years old at the time. The age of consent in Pennsylvania is 16.

Janet Iavasile said she didn't know the extent of the relationship between her daughter and the attorney. She thought he was more of a mentor than a paramour.
"She was interested in law," the mother said.

Now the NYT is making a big deal that Paterno sold his house for $1 to his wife over the summer.

Never mind the fact the Pennsylvania AG said he's not a criminal investigation target.

Never mind the fact that Paterno is 15 years older than his wife.

Never mind the fact that there's estate taxes in play now because Paterno makes a shitload of money.

Never mind the fact that estate planning like this is typical and I've seen this happen a lot.

No, he MUST be covering his ass to protect himself from lawsuits.

Basically, here's the tax thing that Frolik is missing: There is no estate tax if Paterno dies and his wife survives, because the wife is protected.

However, if Paterno dies and then his wife dies at the same time (car accident or something similar) or his wife dies before assets are transferred, then chances are the kids could lose the house because it's in Joe and his wife's name, not just his wife's.

Tenbatsuzen
11-16-2011, 06:22 AM
To clarify further:

If the wife dies before Joe, then presumably, for tax reasons, the house is willed to the kids instead of Joe. The kids would allow Joe to live there, and then when Joe dies, the kids have a half-million dollar asset without a huge tax knock.

this is just so much blather...
if the goal was to transfer the house
to his wife tax free...nothing needed to be done
upon his death she gets 100%
of his assets - no limit - tax free

if the goal was to transfer the house
to the kids tax free upon the deaths
of both parents, then any competent
estate attorney would have made the kids
"joint tenants" 5, 10, 15 or even 20 years ago

the ONLY reason to transfer the house
to his wife for $1 is to get it out of his name
and that would be for fear of someone
coming after his ass(ets)

there is no other explanation

Let's go with your theory that Joe thought he was gonna be sued. He retained no lawyer, there was no indication whatsoever he's in trouble with the law, and 9 years have passed since the 2002 incident. What indication was there that he had to do this?

There are only 2 incidents Joe can be sued on, and the big one - the 2002 shower incident - doesn't have a victim that's come forward.

I have dealt with people who have made this transaction. Remember, JoePa wasn't some schlub, he was making over 1.5 million dollars a year (at least) and making huge money while living modestly. This was estate planning, nothing more.

Tenbatsuzen
11-16-2011, 04:26 PM
The long and short of it:

Stay Put
If you plan to live in your home until you die, and your estate is below the $5 million estate-tax exemption for 2011 and 2012, this is your best strategy. When you die, your home's tax basis will be stepped up to fair market value. Thus you and your heirs will escape capital gains tax on your home's appreciation. And, because the value of your estate is below the estate tax exemption, your heirs will owe no federal estate tax. They are free to move into the house, or sell it and keep the cash tax-free. If they do move into the house, their tax basis for calculating the gain or loss on subsequent sales will be the home's fair market value at the time of your death.

That's the problem. Joe is worth way, WAY more than five million. If he and his wife start estate planning to protect assets, especially at Joe's age, you maintain the wealth w/o the tax hit.

Plus, I may be iffy on this, but as a joint asset, the house isn't subject to civil judgments. Both parties have to be sued to get a joint asset like a house, and the judge would throw out anything against Paterno's wife.
