I guess the last good ska came out when the Bosstones were in their heyday, but I still really like first and second wave stuff. Man, I think rude boys are cool. Theyre skinheads, and since there's a horn section thats like 12 guys that could kick your ass.

A few of the 3rd wave bands were fun, but I'm a 2 Tone man for life.

The Specials were one of the coolest bands ever. Come on, even if you hate ska, you gotta give it up for fuckin' "Ghost Town."

I am a huge ska fan, of all waves

I miss moon ska records

Moon Ska was one of the few 3rd wave labels that did it right. I still have all those old Skarmageddon comps.

And DC's own Pietasters...those guys always put on a great show.

Nah, but I'll check it out!

Bands like Madness and the English Beat get the shaft only being known as one-hit-wonders here in the US. They really did put out a ton of great music.

I think moon ska did it right because The Toasters founder Hingley started it for the toasters and basically wanted bands like the toasters on it.

They had all the great ska acts, and even when they didnt have the likes of LTJ and RBF they released them on their comp. discs. They just had great gorilla marketing and promoted ska music so well.

The Toasters did so much for indie labels and ska music.

and yes the Pietasters always put on a great show and I really havent encountered many ska bands that put on a bad show, maybe some local bands that werent ready for shows, but most ska bands put on great shows.

RBF are kinda terrible; skankin pickle, aquabats, mustard plug, fishbone- there are a shit ton of better third wave ska bands.

I remember when Carson Daily hosted mtv's skaterday at the jersy shore, wearing a skinny black tie, and all the kids were inexplicably doing the twist.

My kingdom for a rude girl that isn't 15 or a dyke.

RBF are amazing live and a ton better then the Bosstones. Bosstones arent even true ska they are more hardcore as that is the genre they started out in and mixed in some ska which basically makes them ska-core. Plus dickey is a complete asshole.

Wait are you saying Skankin pickle and mustard plug are shit?

Stubborn All-Stars will always be my favorite ska band.

I couldn't get into the third wave stuff, though One Cool Guy (the band before streetlight manifesto) we're pretty fucking awesome. But I'll gladly take The Slackers and play Wasted Days.

And Dr. Ring Ding and the Senior All Stars are really good too.

I never got into bands like RBF or the Aquabats because they were just too damn jokey all the time. I'm not saying bands have to be serious or anything (this is ska so of course we wanna have fun), but come on, when you're bordering on being Weird Al-wacky every goddamn song, it grates on me. They're definitely talented musically, but their songs annoy the piss out of me because they're so ridiculous all the goddman time.

I still listen to ska. I saw the pietasters last month. The problem is, there aren't enough new ska bands anymore. I find myself buying ska CDs from 1998.

I'm saying those bands are among the shit ton that are better than RBF.

It doesnt matter that the Bosstones are a mixed style, they actually wrote some songs. RBF sounds like video game music, theyre band geeks getting pussy for the first time in their lives.

They can do whatever they wanna do...it just bugs me when people toss them out to me like, "oh here are some good ska bands." No, the Aquabats are a good gimmick band that happen to use ska as their musical template.

Back on Wensday Ron and Fez said Ska was dead. I gotta disagree with Ron. Like everything else , a scene of a music will grow less popular when another has a highpoint. I finished Highschool this year and I had/have some friends younger then me. Ska isn't forgotten about , in fact ALOT more of the younger teens are into Ska then when I was they're age (16) , when I was that age the GothPunk Fad just died and Emo became well known. Every school at least has one group of rude boys and rude girls I think. But back to the point , I'm kind of sure that the next "big" think in mainstream is gonna be the 4th Ska revival. Every 10 years Ska has a wave kinda I learned.

Ah.... glad I was able to hit many a North Jersey ska show back in the late 90s.....

One Cool Guy was always at the top of my list. Hence, my handle. (Xample was an OCG song)

But the chance of getting to see The Toasters, Pilfers, and many many more was certainly a blessing. Those shows were great.

realmenhatelife

Like the entire Jersey scene is ska bands and their remnants.

And to that highschool kid; ska is definately something that happens in high school, its always been that way. It's something that just makes sense to you when you're sixteen, like hickies and cutting. Now ska is definately dead, I'm saying 'hey ronny, I like it'

I think 75% of my posts contain my compulsion to explain 'emo' to people that think its fall out boy and shit like that. I won't rehash it this time. However look for my 'explaining emo to the kids' sendspace in the near future

ha ha double post some how.
Im mostly into 3rd wave because of the Punk Mixture in it. The first wave isn't really appealing to me nor is 2nd wave , Though I do enjoy The Specials. 3rd Wave is the best; Mustard Plug , Mighty Mighty Bosstones , Operation Ivy (one of the best bands period!) , Voodoo Glowskulls , The Planet Smashers , the old aqua bats, Goldfinger , Buck-O-Nine, Like 2 sublime songs ,Less then Jake , The Suicide Machines (great band) , Link 80 (great even with the lead singer being replaced), The rudiments. And I also realized this at work , why punk and ska mixed . Rude boys wear the 2 tone suits to mock the upper class and such , punks dont like the upper class and things like that, unity amoungst the scene and other similaritys. Pretty awesome if you think about it , maybe the 4th wave is closer then I think. Theres alot of new ska bands within the teen society and since the big ones from the 3rd wave are still around its gonna be a good wave. Though not many 2nd waves remain.

I disagree , ska's not dead. There will always be a scene left for everything , Ive noticed its alot more popular then it was 2 years ago or even before that. And theres no need to explain emo , anyone that think its about falloutboy and depressed teens with everything else that goes with that is just thinking of the stereotype. Original Emo came from the 1980's , totally different from whats seen today. Though the "emo" trend/genre was the biggest thing it's fading , I think Ska's the next thing to "come up to bat" in mainstream once again. But its probally gonna be mostly Ska Core bands since the kids will always want faster and harder music. They'll get that with Ska Core but also something more unique. Emo is too far gone to try to save from the stereo types of boys wearing girls pants , self abuse , poetry , depression , and whiney lyrics from what its really supposed to be. But thats only my opinion.

cant believe all the RBF love... even when they first hit the scene most people saw them as a fuckin hack band. to each their own though

Always loved mephaskapheles, pietasters, toasters. Was HUGE into LTJ until hello rockview, they still put on a good show but whatever. They're first three cd's and all their 7 inchs are fucking awesome.

And kevin is right, Link80 were a great band, too bad the lead singer died :(

And if you like the suicide machines (their first cd rocked) they put out a split with skankin pickle that I cant remember the name of but it was greta cd.

Also AAA first cd was really good

It just popped into my head why so much of the 3rd wave and onwards annoys me to know end...too many of these bands rely on doing "wacky" covers of 80's songs or songs that "OMG, I TOTALLY DIDN'T EXPECT THAT," like Celine Dion's Titanic song or some shit.

That said, outside of the Moon Ska comps, this is the 3rd wave comp that I always liked the most:

Bill Laswell produced this album from the satanic ska band.

Also, in the early 90's, there was quite a ska scene here in northern CA. There was a ska band called Hoodlum Empire. I liked 'em. I got hit in the back of the head with their cassette tape at the concert. A few years back, I looked them up on the internets. Apparently, their singer was a bit crazy, and one day he just disappeared off the face of the earth. Wierd.
