Rent a dog for a day or two, not worry about the vet crap or actually getting attached to your pet.

If only we could do that with women.

I think this is a good idea if people use it the right way, which would be to adopt a pet for a week or so and see if they can handle having an animal in their life. maybe teach the kids a lesson on how to care for a pet. i think that is much better than adopting a pet and then 6 months later trying to bring it back to the shelter

The whole point to gettin a pet is to become attached and have little budday.

You know I might rent a monkey for a day, but a dog?

You could make a killing if you could combine a dog boarding service with this dog rental. You get paid for boarding the dog, rent it to some rube, and you just collect money on both ends and you don't really need to do shit.

Why would you Rent a pet? The whole reason for having a pet is to have a friend and companion that helps to enrich your life.

The only reason I can see for renting a pet would to have a "try out" if you aren't sure you can handle a pet. But still, that can be really cruel to the "rental" pet that bounces from home to home. It couldn't be a well adjusted animal - like a kid that bounces from foster home to foster home, they usually end up screwed up.

Would you be able to return them all beaten-up,battered & bruised like a rent-a-car?

Oh yeah, that teaches kids a great lesson. "Hey, get a dog if you want, we can just give it back once you're sick of it." :wallbash:

Don't get me wrong - I am against this concept.

However, I can see if somebody like Fez who needs another "life" in his world, or an old/infirmed person might need to "Try" having a pet first before completely committing to adopting one. But that is an extreme case and I don't really think it's a good idea - I am just trying to find some reason that renting a pet would be a good idea.

No way is it good if you are "renting" a pet just to see if your kids will be good with a pet or if you want a new one every few months. If there is any doubt that your family can have a pet, DON'T GET ONE.

is it better to have rent and lost than to never have rented at all, i ask you...

what's important is the quality time when you are together

I think ESD would use the same term to describe these pets.

A better idea would be FOSTERING dog while it is awaiting adoption. There are so many organizations that pull dogs off death row in teh shelters and just need someone to watch the dog while they try and get someone to adopt it. It's sick that with all the dogs that need homes, people are whoring out designer breeds so someone can carry it in their pocketbook for a week or two.

I think it is. I wouldn't worry about pets getting too attached, they adapt to their situations very well. They're like little kids, they don't know any better.

The MUCH bigger problem is the thousands of dogs who are put down every day because of the lack of good homes. One of the problems with getting a dog is its a big commitment. If this helps people do a low risk test run, to see how it goes and they later go adopt one of those homeless pets, then I'm all for it.

Though I suspect this is more for rich twats like Paris Hilton who don't want to be bothered with any real responsibility, but like the attention people get when walking their dogs around town. Even if thats the case, if it leads to more pets finding homes then again, I love the idea. And if the pets they use are from shelters, then I like it even more.

I lived and worked in the Grand Canyon once and while i was there i learned that you could "check out" dogs from the kennel and spend a few hours with them. The dogs were lost or abandoned by tourists. I thought it was great, since i knew no people there and generally find dogs to be better company than humans anyway. Probably not the same type of situation as "renting" one, but i just thought i'd share.

With people like this out there (http://cbs11tv.com/topstories/local_story_212153745.html) there seems to be much worse fates for dogs than being rented out. Hell, people probably spoil these dogs rotten, if your spend that much a month to hang out with a dog, you're probably going to spend a lot money on toys and treats...

I have a chocolate minpin and he's a mama's boy. He was just evaluted, and apparently is the tamest minpin on the planet. no aggressions. his half sister, on the other hand, is evil. EEEEvvvvIIIIllll.

Some people just want to 'borrow' an animal to take morning jogs with, or they miss their pets at home if they are on extented travel. Some dogs i think would be ok to do this, like goldens. *shrugs* I would think, though, it would make for a very unstable dog, confused dog?
