Thats crazy talk....
He was an amazing coach, I know the term is over used but he definitely revolutionized the NFL with the West Coast offense.

I played football at KU in 82-84. My coach (Don Fambrough) was buddies with Walsh and had him come speak to us during spring drills/spring game in 82 (I had signed to play there but was still in high school). The guy was so intense and intelligent about football and life in general; one of the best motivational speakers I have ever encountered. Some of the parables he spoke of then I still refer to to this day. One hour, 25 years ago and still has an impact on me.

thank god someone else called out that statement. Montana was not the best QB of our time. He had talent like no other QB around him. I have heard many times that if Phil Simms was drafted by SF and Montana by the Giants. Simms would have 4 rings and Montana would have been out of the league in 3 years.
On to Mr Walsh. Great coach but a better man. He did a lot for football but more for everyday folks. He was a great man he will be missed.

Wow....a huge loss in the football community...
The West Coast offense (while based mostly on Paul Brown's system) has to be considered the greatest offensive system ever created...it COMPLETELY changed the game, and everyone nowadays runs a form of it (just look at his coaching tree, Denny Geen, Iron Mike Shanahan, Jon Gruden, Mooch, Paul Holmgren, Ray Rhodes etc etc)
If there's a Mount Rushmore of football coaches, he has to be on there (along with Lombardi, Brown, Halas, and Landry)

Now this i gotta call out
First of all, isn't it unfair to point out a QB's "situation" in relation to his greatness? Does that mean I should think Johnny Unitas wasn't as great because he played with Lenny Moore and John Mackey and Tom Matte? Does that mean I should think less of Terry Bradshaw because he had such a great defensive team behind him? Should I think less of John Riggins because he ran behind one of the greatest offensive lines of all time? Of course not....
And secondly, Montana led the 49ers to TWO titles WITHOUT Messrs. Rice, Taylor, Jones & c. And they beat two REALLY good teams (the 81 Bengals of Ken Anderson and Pete Johnson were a great team that knocked off the Kellen Winslow Chargers (ask GVac) and the 84 Dolphins were one of the greatest offensive teams EVER, plus the Killer B's were still together for the most part, even though Don McNeil had John Riggins' cleat marks on his ass).
Plus, the NFC at the time in the early 80s was LOADED with talent like the Redskins, Giants, Cowboys (even though they were on the decline and in the middle of the Danny White era), the Eagles (went to the super bowl in 80), the Rams (went to the Super Bowl in 79) and even the Falcons (the Gritz Blitz and General Bobby Lee teams) were halfway decent...if anything, its their Defense that doesn't get enough cred for being as good as it was
Now i'm not saying Montana was the greatest ever (that goes to John Unitas), but the guy still won two titles without a whole lot of help (his 81 team included such superstars as Earl Cooper and Bill Ring and Freddie Solomon)...
Look at this Roster (http://www.jt-sw.com/football/pro/rosters.nsf/Annual/1981-sf) and tell me if you still think he had as much talent around him as you think...
And how about this 1984 team....who's the offensive stud besides Roger Craig? (http://www.pro-football-reference.com/teams/sfo1984.htm) Renaldo Nehemiah? Freddie Solomon? Russ Francis?
For my money? No one was as clutch as Montana...not only cause he led TWO super bowl winning drives, but there's the drive and pass to Dwight Clark in 81, and all the stuff at Notre Dame.
And to say "Montana would have been out of the game in 3 years" if he had been drafted by the Giants, is a huge insult to the Giants, who only had one of the greatest Defenses of all time during the era, led by some guy named LT, and some other guy named Banks, and some other guy named Carson, and won two super bowls in their own right

Got to agree with El
Montana led the 1993 Marty Schottenhiemer coached Kansas City Chiefs to the AFC championship game. The same dreadful, choke-filled Marty Schottenhiemer who has not gotten out of the first round of the playoffs since. Montana had Marcus Allen on that team but VERY little more. That team was all Montana, even at the age he was at the time.
Best QB ever.

The original quote was that Joe Montana was the best quarterback of our time. Not the most clutch, not a great motivator, not the one with the cutest smile. That statement is simply false. Dan Marino, John Elway, Brett Farve, Steve Young and Payton Manning are / were better quaterbacks then him.
As far as Phill Simms never had a John Taylor or a Jerry Rice and he played in the notoriously difficult meadowlands. If Montana and his rag arm was the G-Mens QB he would have had a very difficult time.

Joe's got 4 super bowl rings....the other guys you mentioned have considerably less than that...and how many game winning drives did any of those guys make in the Super Bowl? The only one of those that comes close to Montana in my eyes is Elway, and he never won till he got a running game

Unitas is not even close to being the best QB Ever. Elway, Marino, Favre imo are much better and if Peyton continues his career like it is now he will be the best hands down.
And the statement about Montana being out of the league after 3 seasons if he was drafted by the giants was made (and imo true) because Montana couldnt take a hit and the early simms years were very bad. If Montana took the hits Simms took Montana would be out of the league because he couldnt take a hit.

Youre joking right?
3 Titles, 10 pro bowls, 3 MVPs, 3 Bert Bell Awards, over 40,000 yards and close to 300 TDs....in an era where NOBODY THREW THE FOOTBALL
Unitas set many passing records during his career. He was the first quarterback to throw for more than 40,000 yards, despite playing during an era when NFL teams played shorter seasons of 12 or 14 games (as opposed to today's 16-game seasons). He also threw a touchdown pass in 47 consecutive games between 1956 and 1960, a record that still stands and is considered by many the Mount Everest-like football equivalent to Joe DiMaggio's 56-game baseball hitting streak.
NONE of those QB's you mentioned would be around in their capacity WITHOUT Unitas....

I hated Denny Green and what he did to MY Vikings & Cardinals!! I blame the west coast offense, undoubtedly Walsh was the man for THAT team,God bless him & all that...he should've kept his secrets to himself...some idiots bastardized that system and make me long for the 3 yards & a cloud of dust....with a GREAT defense.
