I love New Miserable Experience. "Found Out About You" has incredible lyrics and the music and singing are both pretty good.

Is this an embarrassing band to like? Should I keep this to myself in the future?

Dammit, by saying that one song, it ruined the obvious joke... Couldn't you have picked Hey Jealousy?

I liken the Gin Blossoms to The Spin Doctors.

Overall, I wouldn't admit I like them as a band. But they do have a couple catchy tunes.

No way, I think the Gin Blossoms are much better than the Spin Doctors... but I think you've answered my question.

If by "the Gin Blossoms" you mean dressing like Kristy Yammaguchi and riding the mechanical horse in front of Walmart singing "I'm a Slave 4 U" then yes, it's embarrassing.

But I wear a skirt so who am I to judge?

yeah so, i'm not embarrassed. she sings, dances, plays piano/guitar, writes her lyrics.. the Wayons brothers stink for ruining her good name! haha!

anyone who glissers into a moonwalk is ok by me!

I remember buying their first album just because I read that they were David Letterman's favorite band.

I still like "Hey Jealousy," but couldn't name another track by them.

No, not embarassing. Only if they were like your favorite band or something.

They have some pretty listenable hits. I'd liken them to Goo Goo Dolls or Third Eye Blind. Bands that have a few songs I like, but I'd never go see them in concert.

Their first album is one of the better power pop albums of the last 20 years. Everything after that strikes me as pretty "meh," likely because they kicked out the guitarist, who was their songwriter, just before the first album broke due to his drinking problems. He eventually offed himself.

Comparing them to the likes of Goo Goo Dolls and Third Eye Blind in terms of having a few hits makes sense, but musically, not at all. TEB were about as trad rock as you could get, sounding like dozens of other bands that spawned after the alt.rock wave crashed and pulled back around 1996 and 1997. The Goo Goo Dolls are one of the worst ripoff bands of all time, never able to settle on trying to steal the Replacements' or Soul Asylum's sound more.

And the Spin Doctors? Come the fuck on...they were a hippie jam band for Christ's sake. They SCATTED in their songs.

You have to at least be comfortable being pseudo-gay to publically love some quality power pop.

Seeing Rancid, however, requires acceptance of some full-on, ass juice-flowin' butt-fuckin' in the middle of the road.

I knew this would be a hot topic! Say what you will.. New Miserable Experience is a damn good album.

Look at the lyrics to "Found Out About You"

"All last summer in case you dont recall
I was yours and you were mine forget it all
Is there a line that I could write
Sad enough to make you cry
All the lines you wrote to me were lies
The months roll past the love that you struck dead
Did you love me only in my head?
Things you said and did to me
Seemed to come so easily
The love I thought Id won you give for free
Whispers at the bus stop
I heard about nights out in the school yard
I found out about you
Rumors follow everywhere you go
Like when you left and I was last to know
Youre famous now and theres no doubt
In all the places you hang out
They know your name and know what youre about
Whispers at the bus stop
I heard about nights out in the school yard
I found out about you
Street lights blink on through the car window
I get the time too often on am radio
You know its all I think about
I write your name drive past your house
Your boyfriends over I watch your light go out
Whispers at the bus stop
I heard about nights out in the school yard
I found out about you"

I'm sorry, phenominal lyrics.

From Wikipedia:

In 1999, he released his third and final album as Scatman John, Take Your Time. It was later revealed that he had been battling ill health since late 1998. He continued work on the album despite being told to take it easy from his substantial workload. He was later diagnosed with lung cancer and soon went into intensive treatment. He maintained a positive attitude throughout, declaring that "whatever God wants is fine by me... I've had the very best life. I have tasted beauty." He died in his Los Angeles home on December 3, 1999.

In a 1996 interview, he commented that "I hope that the kids, while they sing along to my songs or dance to it, feel that life is not that bad at all. Even for just a minute."

It was the lung cancer...and he's been dead since 1999(!)

You sure don't run into a lot of people who secretly (or openly) love Better Than Ezra. I saw them live a few times at Ole Miss and once just last year at Nokia Theater in Times Square. I love and know every word to every song on "Deluxe". "King of New Orleans" makes me cry every time I hear it. I don't know why, homesickness and a love/longing for pre-Katrina New Orleans I guess. But I digress. I too love Better Than Ezra. Always have. Gin Blossoms ain't so bad either, but I don't own any of their music.

I believe Mayhem did indeed wear make up, it's Black Metal. That's a staple of their music it seems. Never very interested.

And I have watced Metalocalypse. Great show in my opinion, loved it. Hope it gets picked up again. Can't wait for the soundtrack CD I heard is due out eventually. I want to hear full tracked recordings of the songs from the show. They had A LOT of Metal artists in on the different songs.

If anyone should be ashamed and embarrased of their love for the Gin Blossoms its me, I have on my Ipod all 3 of their albums, including the 2006 release "Major Lodge Victory" AND , and this is a big AND I also have the little known release they did as "The Poppin Wheelie's" , My love for 90's music is a sickness really. Tommorrow I am attending a concert in Dayton, Ohio, the bill is Collective Soul, The Counting Crows, and Live..........I'm driving 700 miles for this show.........I should seek help

Wow. Is there a wormhole on that 700 mile trip that leads to 1995?

I love New Miserable Experience. "Found Out About You" has incredible lyrics and the music and singing are both pretty good.

Is this an embarrassing band to like? Should I keep this to myself in the future?

no need to keep it to yourself. there is nothing wrong with admitting that you like the gin blossoms.

But weren't the Goo Goo Dolls on Metal Blade records? un-metal on a metal label?

the Deftones are on Maverick, which is Madonna's label.

Know how I know you're gay? You listen to the Gin Blossoms.

...but I like some of their songs too, so I've got a bit of the ghey in me as well.

Miss the Scatman .......

And I'll always like "Hey Jealousy" because it was the Beginner Level song in the
guitar playing PC game "Welcome to West Feedback" ....

The Gin Blossoms?

Why not just throw Poi Dog Pondering and the Del Fuegos on the pile? And Matthew Sweet.

And, whoever did that "Closing Time" song (I'm too lazy to Google it)

Whatever. I've got Ministry on my Ipod, and there's nothing ghey-er than that.
