As they talked about on the show today, Tom Waits may be one of the greatest musicians of all time, as well as a fantastic actor. Appreciate him here.

It is always a treat when ever he is on Letterman

just watched the tiger and the snow, and he (and that song) was a real high point in an otherwise tired movie ... i'd just recommend just watching the trailer (or down by law)
there's a great sequence at the end of smoke, where auggie retells the camera story scored by "innocent when you dream" ... i saw it right after my grandmother died and the song dropped me -- i've been an obsessive fan ever since
i got to see him at the beacon in 1999 -- one of the best shows i've ever seen
i just wish he'd tour more

I love him...kinda like Ronnie was saying, songs like "Blind Love" have gotten me through a lot of dark periods in my life

Closing Time is one of my favorite albums. Every song is great.

Whatever the song was that was in Things To Do In Denver When You're Dead - if that song were to show up in my email box I might fill in for Blowjobman for a day.

I'll forward "Jockey Full Of Bourbon" to LordJezo, and he can forward it to your email.

"It was just me, my problems and Tom Waits..." -Ron B. (this should be in the LOTD thread)
Try to read Wild Years, the Music and Myth of Tom Waits, not so much a biography, but a great history of his music making process.

Don't go to church on Sunday
Don't get on my knees to pray
Don't memorize the books of the Bible
I got my own special way
Bit I know Jesus loves me
Maybe just a little bit more
I fall on my knees every Sunday
At Zerelda Lee's candy store
Well it's got to be a chocolate Jesus
Make me feel good inside
Got to be a chocolate Jesus
Keep me satisfied
Well I don't want no Anna Zabba
Don't want no Almond Joy
There ain't nothing better
Suitable for this boy
Well it's the only thing
That can pick me up
Better than a cup of gold
See only a chocolate Jesus
Can satisfy my soul
(Solo)
When the weather gets rough
And it's whiskey in the shade
It's best to wrap your savior
Up in cellophane
He flows like the big muddy
But that's ok
Pour him over ice cream
For a nice parfait
Well it's got to be a chocolate Jesus
Good enough for me
Got to be a chocolate Jesus
Good enough for me
Well it's got to be a chocolate Jesus
Make me feel good inside
Got to be a chocolate Jesus
Keep me satisfied

Several years ago I played the song ,"The Heart of Saturday Night", for a girl I just started dating. Her reaction was, "Hmmm....its a song about a guy driving a car. Am I supposed to be 'getting' something out of it?" Needless to say, it was a short-lived relationship. Now whenever I date a new girl I play Tom as a character indicator. (I'm still very single)

Tom Waits is some kind of awesome demonspawn that boozed and fucked and fought his way out of the coolest Hell that ever Helled, all while smoking an eternal cigarette and jabbing your soul with a sharp stick.

Wow. This thread brought Mojo Pin out of the darkness, and into the glow of the CRT where he can be appreciated.

Christmas card from a hooker in minneapolis is a very enjoyable tune for me.
It may just be me, but listening to Tom Waits makes me want to drink scotch/whiskey, and read Charles Bukowski.

I never had a large appreciation for Tom Waits until I heard "Innocent When You Dream" on Ron and Fez. Such a phenomenal song. Does anyone remember which song he last performed on The Daily Show? I remember loving it too but no clue what it's called.

He has done some stuff with Les Claypool, and that originally got me hooked. I got 'Orphans' for my BF a few months ago, that made for a happy BF. Tom Waits is goodness. Too bad whenever he plays somewhere, it is sold out by the time you find out about it.

I agree, Tom Waits is an amazing musician. I also love seeing him in movies too, especially when he pops into a scene and I had no idea he's in it.

OK - time for a first post finally after years of trolling...
Post 9-11 Ron and Fez closed out a show with a Tom Waits song that ripped my insides out. I am now trying hard to find that song... anyone?
Not only that, but as I enter a dark Swiss winter, I am looking to delve more into Waits after Ronnie's eye-opening comments a month ago or so. Thanks for the threads - I now have a good place to start.
