Limey Bastard! I love this show too, though to be honest I always had my doubts. I always figured that the film crew had to be right there and wouldn't let anything really happen to him, but I had no idea it was this bad.
In one episode filmed in California's Sierra Nevada mountains he was shown biting off the head of a snake for breakfast and boasting that he was living on 'just a water bottle, a cup and a flint for making fire'. (http://www.dailymail.co.uk/pages/live/articles/news/news.html?in_article_id=470155&in_page_id=1770)
Viewers were not told that he was actually spending some nights in the Pines Resort hotel at Bass Lake, where the rooms have Internet access and is advertised as 'a cosy getaway for families' complete with blueberry pancakes for breakfast. (http://www.dailymail.co.uk/pages/live/articles/news/news.html?in_article_id=470155&in_page_id=1770)
In another episode when Grylls declared he was a 'real life Robinson Crusoe' stuck on a desert island, he was actually on an outlying part of the Hawaiian archipelago and retired to a motel at nightfall. (http://www.dailymail.co.uk/pages/live/articles/news/news.html?in_article_id=470155&in_page_id=1770)
Mark Weinert, a survival consultant brought in for the programme, said one show also wrongly gave the impression that the adventurer built a Polynesian- style raft using only materials around him, including bamboo and palm leaves for a sail. (http://www.dailymail.co.uk/pages/live/articles/news/news.html?in_article_id=470155&in_page_id=1770)
Mr Weinert had in fact led a team that built the raft, which was then dismantled so that Grylls could be shown constructing it on camera. (http://www.dailymail.co.uk/pages/live/articles/news/news.html?in_article_id=470155&in_page_id=1770)
In another episode, Grylls was filmed attempting to lasso 'wild' mustang in the Sierra Nevada, when the horses were actually tame and had been brought in by trailer from a nearby trekking station. (http://www.dailymail.co.uk/pages/live/articles/news/news.html?in_article_id=470155&in_page_id=1770)

That is terrible.
I never saw the show, but was looking forward to catching it because I've had a few friends tell me it was great.
Now, I'm smiling as I forward this story to them.

Though, to be fair, he did once sqeeze some elephant shit and drank the liquid inside. After that, I guess you can't hold it against him if he wanted to go back to the hotel room and order up some in-room porn on the tv.
Don't worry....Survivor Man is coming back with a new season soon. That mother fucker is actually alone out there, he has to set up his own camera shots and does most of the his stuff on a hand held.
I saw that "wild mustang" Man vs. Wild. He falls in black mud and then after the next commerical break his pants are back to khaki color. Come on man....

I always thought the show was really enteraining but I don't think they should market it as a survival show being that most of the shit he does would get you killed in a heatbeat.
This being said...
Les Stroud is a God! Survivorman forever!

I can't say I am surprised. The guy has way too much energy for someone that is supposed to be in a survival situation. I wouldn't say the guy is a fraud, he never explicitly says that he is out there for real. I don't watch cause I think it's real, I watch it to know how to start a fire with sticks. I mean it is TV, they won't let the talent get killed. But they will let him drink shit (Dave?)
I'll still watch the show.

Wait, you thought that show was real?
Exactly. Survivorman has the total advantage because his show was on first. And eventhough his show is probably not 100% what it seems to be, they at least go out of their way to maintain the conceit that his is alone and living in his environment. That being said, the recent "Urban Survival" show was god awful.

What people fail to realize is this show is not about a guy stranded in the wilderness using only his cunning to survive long enough to find civilization. It's an instructional show teaching techniques YOU can use if you find yourself in similiar situations. The guy has done PLENTY to earn my respect on that show. I've seen him skin and eat animals. None of that was faked. I've seen him jump into quicksand, not fake. I've seen him drink his own piss several times. Not fake.
The fact he has a camera crew completely negates the possibility for an authentic survival experience, so the wool was certainly not being pulled over my eyes. No network is going to risk losing an entire crew and equipment for a stupid show.

in the very first episode he floats down a river and you can plainly see he is wearing a life jacket under his clothes, from then on i took everything he did with a grain of salt, but the info and techniques he gives are true imo

Quicksand poses almost no danger to people--mythbusters proved that one. Rest of that stuff is meh at best.
Now if you tell me the Real World isn't real, i'm going to get angry.

Some of the things that he "teaches" are pretty useful. I.e. the sun moves one hand width per hour. Interesting.
But, some of the stuff that he does is simply stupid. If you were in a survival situation, you would never climb down a fucking waterfall. Even if you where a skilled climber, you would never put yourself into a situation where you could cripple yourself in the wild. That bothers me.
