Does anyone here still use USENET?
I use Google Groups to lurk... for the groups that interest me, USENET has literally become the wild wild west. There's some good nuggets there, and some interesting topics, but some of the most deranged, psychotic people hang out there, and it's completely unmoderated.

That's the funny thing about it. Usenet seems to be frozen in the mid-90's. But it is an entertaining collection of psychopaths.

Usenet is the best kept secret on the internet. Get yourself a good provider and a news reader, you can find just about any tv show or radio program very shortly after it airs. I rely on it for when I miss O&A or R&F. In some ways, it's a relic of the past, but indexing sites like binsearch.info have made it much easier to find what you're looking for.
I'll shut up now, because the first rule of Usenet is "Don't talk about Usenet."

Usenet was my favorite when I first discovered the Internet in 1994. I still post and read several groups.
I wish the Ron and Fez group (alt.fan.ron-and-fez) was more active.

The FBI or the RIAA/MPAA? Most stories I've heard involve people getting fined by the MPAA/RIAA for sharing files over Bit Torrent, Limewire, etc. Usenet isn't a typical "file-sharing" service, since it's decentralized and most people use it for downloading but not uploading. That's not to say one couldn't get in trouble for downloading, I've just never heard of it happening. It's more likely they'd go after the news providers like Giganews first. I'm actually surprised that's never happened but Usenet seems to fly under the radar because it's over the average user's head.

it's spelled Binaries :)
I love usenet. Giganews now offers encrypted transfers, which is nice. They also don't keep logs from what I read.
Just stay away from "UseNext" client, I have not heard good things about it.
On my Mac I use "Unison" as my client. That thing is freakin awesome. On Windows there's "Agent" (or the free version, "FreeAgent").

I never paid. It's part of the e-mail service with your ISP.
I've also never used it to download binaries. I strictly used it just to read and post messages.
It was the predecessor to message boards.
