off topic but thought this was interesting:
somebody in my fantasy leauge was joking about keeping tom brady in as his starter on his bye week saying that brady would somehow find a way to help his team by not even playing...at the last minute he threw in philip rivers as his starter...rivers ending scoring negative 3.84 points thus proving that if he would have started brady in his bye week his team would have done better

AFC:
Division Winners
Patriots: Duh
Colts: Defense took a hit with Freeney out for the year, but is also the class, may not get by Pittsburgh
Steelers: Easy Lock for the Playoffs, my decision on their season will happen after they play the Pats
Chargers: They will back-door in, but have a good offense, Should win the West, Worst team of all the Division WInners
Wild Cards
Browns: I have a feeling on this, will beat the Schlubs in the AFC North to pick up enough wins. Very easy schedule down the road
Titans: Another Team with an Easy Schedule. The Titans have all these wins with a sub-par Vince Young and Kerry Collins playing for them. If they step it up a notch, they can be a Wildcard Team
Almost Wild Card
Bills: The upcoming loss to the Pats will bring them down. The Jags Giants and Skins will be tough games, too much for the Bills to overcome. I want then to make it, I like their team.
Jags: See Titans(Schedule Wise), but I feel they will lose out to the Titans with the last wild-card spot. Not enough offense and their defense has not played as good as last year.
Broncos and Chiefs: Can Back-door into Division Win, if SD shits the Bed, no other chance to make the playoffs.
The Rest Suck Balls, sucks if you are fan of these teams, they sure let you down

And to make things even better, remember that the 49ers traded their number 1 pick to the Patriots. So even though the league took away the Pat's first round pick for spygate, they should still get a damned good player early in the draft.

In the 2007 Draft, the Patriots ended up trading Joe Staley & John Bowie for a top 5 pick & Randy Moss.

Sports bettor RJ Bell, who runs a betting Web site, said his research shows that the biggest point spread since 1980 came in 1993 when San Francisco was a 23-point favorite over Cincinnati, a game the 49ers won just 21-8. During that time, there have been only five games with a point spread of more than 20 points.

I don't think it has much to do with the Eagles at this point. This is from the ESPN article :
"Nowadays, you don't see too many spreads over 16 or 17 points," said Sean Van Patten, an oddsmaker at Sports Consultants in Las Vegas. "That's because most teams take their starters out in the fourth quarter of a lopsided game. The Patriots don't. I call this phenomenon The [Bill] Belichick Factor."

With the Cowboys and the Packers both winning, meaning that their game next week will probably end up deciding homefield advantage in the NFC, it's an absolute disgrace that it's on the NFL Network.
Especially with Bryant "Turnover On Downs" Gumbel calling it. Pathetic.

Someone high up in the NFL told everyone what to do if you want to watch all the games. "Get Directv." The NFL isn't even pretending that cable is the way to go anymore.
Although, the NFL is trying (http://www.iwantnflnetwork.com/) to get it on your cable. I have to pay for a Sports Package that I don't use just so I can watch 8 games a year. Huzzah!

Actually that's the NFL's spin on the deal. Here is my understanding.
The NFL Network wants their channel on the "basic tier". So if you got channels 1-99 you would automatically get their network. The problem with that thinking is that the NFL Network is a sub-niche channel, and cable companies generally only put the main niche channels on their basic tier.
So you probably have access to NBA TV, but it's on a digital tier & you have ESPN and it's on the basic tier. The logic is that ESPN covers the niche of general sports, but NBA TV only covers the sub sporting niche of NBA basketball.
The NFL Network has argued that they deserve to be on the "basic tier" because of interest, but their rates are pretty high & it's not basic tier worthy. It's the same reason MTV2, AE Biography, Lifetime Movies, Discovery Flight, etc....are all on a digital tier.
The NFL Network & the "Big Ten Network" are both pulling this strong-armed tactic, and quite frankly I'm sick of it. I would gladly pay for the service, but they are getting pretty fucking greedy.

Not sure, maybe because their are so many games. Also the NFL draws many more viewers per game.
Do cable companies carry ESPN Game Plan? DirecTv has that too, just curious if football on both levels are segregated (lack of a better word)

Exactly about the cash.
But Bossanova you are on to something that the NFL doesn't seem to be thinking about: long-term cash. If you keep having these key primetime games unavailable to 2/3 of the public, aren't you going to slowly erode parts of your audience. Especially when the other major sports basically bend over backwards to showcase their products on free tv?

I honestly don't know if you should be mad at the cable company.
The MLB is on TBS or ESPN or FOX, all on the regular cable basic tier. The NFL Network is diverting games away from the regular cable basic tier and asking the cable companies to break their models of doing business just for them. And even more so, just for what...6 to 8 games per year?

It goes back into the 1990s, I believe. They've been battling forever. It was originally about the Sunday Ticket, but big cable didn't want to charge as much as the NFL would charge. So the NFL put all of their eggs in the DirecTV basket, which by this point (2007) should have overtaken cable, which obviously hasn't happened (although I wish it would; DirecTV is light years ahead of cable).
Peter King explains what's going on (http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2007/writers/peter_king/11/18/week11/2.html) (at the bottom of the page)

So Peter King is basically arguing that the NFL Network is a better mass appeal channel than Turner Classic Movies? Seriously, here are the arguments in that article:
NFL: We can make you money.
Cable: We have a model, stick to it.
Like I said earlier, I'll reluctantly side with the cable companies as they seem to have a solid rationale for their stance...whereas the NFL is just throwing arguments against a wall.

None of you guys should have cable anyway.......I've had three different television providers over the past 5-6 years, Cablevision, DirecTV, and Comcast. DirecTV absolutely blows every other carrier out of the water. It's hands down the best service. After going the way of DirecTV, if I had a choice I would NEVER go back to cable. The only reason why I have Comcast at my apartment is because my unit does not properly face the south west sky. Whenever I leave Florida I will be going right back to DirecTV.

People always talk about the "weather issues" with DirecTV and though I can only speak from personal experience, Comcast cuts out about 10 times more then DirecTV ever did. Cablevision was the slowest out of the 3 and cut out a little more often then DirecTV, but nothing like how often Comcast cuts out. Yes, DirecTV would go blank in the event of a massive storm but the outage never lasted long. Anyway, this is a football thread. So i'll stop bringing up my love for DirecTV.

Jerry Jones isn't too happy about it, either... (http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2007/football/nfl/11/22/nfl.cable.jones.ap/index.html)
"I am frustrated that we've got literally several million fans that won't get to see that game because Time Warner won't be carrying it," Jones said in the locker room after the Cowboys' 34-3 victory over the New York Jets (http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/football/nfl/teams/jets). "I'm hot about that. I hope those fans will go to AT&T satellite or go over to a competing cable company."
Time Warner is the primary cable provider in the Dallas area.
Jones is the outspoken chairman of the league's NFL Network committee. His comments came just three days after Comcast, the nation's largest cable company, sent a cease-and-desist letter to the NFL Network demanding the channel's representatives stop encouraging fans to leave the cable provider.
"I know I have been given a cease and desist to quit saying that, but that is a fact," Jones said. "It's frustrating to think millions of Cowboys and Packers fans won't be able to see it."

My last two apartments were based upon whether or not I could get DirecTV or not. The place I'm living in now, however, I cannot get it, as I'm in a high rise with no balcony. If DirecTV made an indoor, stick to the window dish, I'd get it again. Or at least think about it, seeing that I dropped $800 on a Series 3 Tivo that won't work with DirecTV.
But I agree, DirecTV is absolutely the best.

what was actually Trigger Finger or Trigger Happy? Cause I absolutely heard "Sawed-Off", you can't mix those up.
You know what? I missed the Steelers defense introductions. The Trigger thing was either on the Steelers O or the Miami D.

Holy Jesus. During the Pittsburgh Defense introductions one guy was introduced as Tyrone "Sawed Off" Carter. Does anybody else find that INCREDIBLY gangster? Like he's prob. got more guns then Tank Johnson.
Maybe he's short.

just like it would take incredible luck and incredible breaks to go 16-0, it takes the same to go 0-16.
i disagree
if you dont show up and just go through the motions, no amount of breaks are gonna make you win a game you shouldnt
but to go undefeate you have to try 110%, get tons of breaks, play in a shitty division, and hav superior talent

its already beyond ugly, i dont know if i have 4 quarters in me. but for some reason I can't stop rooting for Ricky Williams. I don't know what it is about him, it's def. not the pot thing, but I want to see him return to dominance despite the fact that he's never remained committed to himself or his teammates.
i love a good comback story
esp when the most talented guy in the leauge just lacks to motivation and love of the game and then eventually comes back to do something
ive been rooting for ricky for a while now
and he could be a cool fantasy football snag of the waiver wire
no one would have the balls to claim em

no team doesn't show up and go through the motions 16 games a year. to quote herm, 'you play to win the game.' im not gonna question the guys that play professional football. teams aren't there to collect paychecks, they're there to win. no team mails it in for an entire season.

i agree and they prob werent mailng it in all the games they've lost so far but
what i was saying is you have to try hard to every down, every play, get a few breaks to win every game
you dont have to try all that hard to lose every game all it takes is one lazy down per game and you could lose

i didn't watch any of the game, saw there was no score on espn.com and excitedly turned on the game hoping for a 0-0 tie...just in time for the winning kick. sounds like a dreadful game. a kick return td would be hilarious to end it, tho'

For any jet fans still out there, mangini stuck up for Clemens this week, but said it isn't ruled out that Brad Smith might start at qb down the road, what a fucking joke he is, you have your qb, pennington, on the bench and you sit him, then give your new qb 4 games and already start talking about sitting him, what a fucking joke. But thank god he has enough time to make motorola commercials, quasi-fat piece of shit!

Yeah, I'm really not interested in McNabb. I'd rather have Chad Pennington than McNabb, but I need a running back first.
The Bears' window is closing fast, unfortunately, even though they lucked their way through a win on sunday. I don't have a good feeling about this week. Talk about a game where you just can't know who's going to show up doing what. I don't know the line, but it can't be more than 2 points one way or the other.
Edit: I just looked it up, and it's Giants -2. I'm Ritalin the Fucking Greek over here.

Seriously if you guys got Chad, it'd be the best thing for you to do. But the jets will be trading him and vilma in the offseason, so just get the defense healthy and get him then , prolly for a, ugh, third round pick

I know I'm in the insane minority, but I'd sign Grossmn cheap and focus the draft picks on getting a better safety for when Mike Brown inevitably breaks again and strengthening the o-line. Find a RB through trade or FA signing.
I'd also see what teams would offer in a trade for Hester.

It would have to be a touchdown machine otherwise the bears are going to rely on defensive scores

I don't think you're crazy at all. What happens with the end of this year will go a long way towards figuring that situation out. Maybe Grossman really needed to be benched, humiliated a little and given a chance to get his head straight. I'm impressed with his new attitude, and I like that he didn't let it get him completely down.
We need a better safety for sure. Archuleta is finished. You're right about O Line too. It's aging and I think that's a place on a team where you can/have to develop your own talent. We need some D Line help too.
I don't think Hester would get much in trade, and I think he'll be worth a ton of yards of field position in the next 2-3 years. There's almost never any real splash in the NFL trade wise.
