View Full Version : Top 5 living Legends....

At dinner my wife and I started talking about living legends. It evolved into a list of the top 5 living legends. People that are just huge and transcend fame. So far we came up with 3:
Paul McCartney
Nelson Mandella
Jane Goodall
So what do people think, any one else to add to the list, or do you disagree with any of these three?

I'd disagree with Jane Goodall, maybe throw Muhammad Ali on there. But if Ali's on there then we have two black people on a five person list and that hardly seems fair.

I would throw Neil Armstrong in there too.

Cool question and being myopic a little I turned it into my biggest 5 still out there I'd chose. Tough call but here's four for me ... for now.
1) Patrick Roy
2) Raine Maida
3) Ronnie B.
4) Jack Nicklaus
For your poll, how about Robert DeNiro, Nicklaus again, Mick Jagger and even Tiger at this point.

Ronnie B goes with out saying.
I like Neil Armstrong on the list, he is by all accounts a legend.
I think you need to keep Jane Goodall on the list, in fact she is my #1 on the list. She forced us to redefine what it means to be human. In 100 years she will be in the history books.
I thought about Ali and a few other athletes, but could not come up with one that had a large enough effect on the world to warrnet top 5 status. If Jackie Robinson was alive he might be on the list.
Spoon. I do like the personal top 5 legends idea, here is mine,
Jane Goodall
Arther C. Clarke
Kirby Puckett
George Lucas
Garison Keiler

i think i might put dylan over McCartney....
Pacino? Deniro? I think both of them lack something that Brando had, but obviously he's out...
Hank Aaron? He currently holds the most famous of all sports records?
Everyone knows Hulk Hogan...
but then again, what defines being a legend?
thats the toughest question ive been faced with in a long time...

It Seems Like A Legend Has To Be "Of A Certain Age", At Least That's The Usual Implication, And Must Have A Certain "Gravitas". If F_S Had To Choose A Rock Legend, It Would Be From A Pool Of Dylan, McCartney, And Clapton, And He'd Probably Pick Dylan.

I would say a Legend is a mix of someone that has had an impact on their field, and their impact has to also touch other areas. They also have to have staying power, their names and what they have done has to have the potential to stick around well after they are gone.
I have a problem with actors and musicians for the most part. They are famous but that isn't exactly what I would call legendary. I mean can anyone name an actor form the
1800s ?
As silly as it may sound Stan Lee is more of a legend in my mind than Jack Nicolson or Elizabeth Taylor. Stan Lees creations are cultural icons.
As far as the Dylan/McCartney debate, I still say sir Paul takes it. Paul was a member of the Beatles, and they relly changed music and had a huge cultural impact. There is no doubt Dylan is a Rock Legend, but I wouldn't put him top 5 overall.

It's interesting that most of the pople mentioned are entertainers. What about leaders and inovators?

Hmm...It Would Seem To Be A Legnd, That You Would Need The Genaral Public To Be Aware Of The Person. Pretty Close To 100% Name Recognition. F_S Bets If You Ask Joe Or Joanne Blow On The Street, "Who Is A Legend", They Would Pick Liz Taylor Over Stan Lee 100 To 1.
Here Is The Lame Definition From Dictionary.Com:
7. a person who is the center of such stories: She became a legend in her own lifetime.

Thats kind of my point. If we were posting on a board in the 1800s we may have mentioned some stage actors that were huge, and then film comes in and the stage is almost forgoten, but some people are above all that, like Mark Twain for instance.
Maybe I should rename my idea, I guess what I mean is people that have chaged the world and left a huge impact, thats what I was going for when I said Top 5 Legend.

Stephen Hawking maybe. Although I read/saw something recently that asserted he was more revered by the media than he was by his fellow physisists.
I'd go with Neil Armstrong as mentioned above.
A few months ago I would have said Kurt Vonnegut, but I guess I'll go with John Irving instead.
Bill Gates
Cal Ripken

As silly as it may sound Stan Lee is more of a legend in my mind than Jack Nicolson or Elizabeth Taylor. Stan Lees creations are cultural icons. I agree with this. And what you said about Pacino/DeNiro not making it either. Brando would deserve it though.
Too bad so many people from the 1960s died. Looking at my books and bios, it's almost like there are no "great" people today either.
Stephen Hawkings?
In my mind, a living legend has to be someone who could be out of the public eye for years and yet when you mention him/her, people knows exactly who you are talking about. Someone like Ali, I feel is like that. You might not know exactly what he did but you know who he is. I don't feel that was about Jane Goodall.

That is waht I am talking about Stephen Hawkings has to be in the top 5, I can't believe I missed him. Hell he is the only guy ever to play himself on Star Trek, if that isn't Legend status I don't know what is.

In no particular order
Paul Newman (not only on the Mount Rushmore of Acting, but also raised millions and millions and millions through charitable ventures)
Muhammad Ali (the ultimate living icon of black America)
Chuck Berry (for his impact on music)
Pele
Tom Waits

Muhammad Ali
Neil Armstrong
Paul McCartney
Jack Nicholson
I really can't think of a fifth.
About Jane Goodall, she showed up at the Giants Stadium Live Earth show and a good number of the people around us either didn't know who she was or basically said "I think she did something with monkeys." Her contributions to the world shouldn't be ignored, but part of the living legend thing to me is the awe of being in their presence, there has to be a star quality to them. I don't think she qualifies

The Term "Legend" Was Probably Not Right, As Someone Pointed Out.
The Root Of The Word Legend Is "Story" (IE, The Legend Of Paul Bunyon). A Human "Legend" By Implication Is A Person About Whom Stories Are Told, To The Point They Become Almost Mythical.
A "Legend" Does Not Have To Be Good. If Jeffrey Dahmer Were Alive And Lived To Be 80, He Would Probably Be Considered A Living Legend.
After Thinking About This More, Of All The Names Listed Above, The Only "Slam-Dunks" To F_S Would Be Muhammad Ali And Nelson Mandella. Mother Teresa Was A Slam-Dunk Living Legend Too, But She Died.

Ali defines this topic. I think he has to be the #1 Living Legend. The fights, the trash talk, his status as a sports/political/social figure is unmatched. Look at the controversy he created by converting to Islam, changing his name, and refusal to be drafted into the Army. The Parkinson's has in a weird way only added to the Legend. The Greatest.
