My grandmother used to do that, but her raisons were little these raisons she put in are big. They do not taste that bad they are a little sweeter. I prefer them without but I was afraid she would of yelled at me if I said something to her.

If The Meatballs Have Pork In Them, Then Raisins Would Be Delicious. Maybe Some Toasted Pine Nuts Too.

If They Are Primarily Beef, Then Raisins Sound A Little Odd, But F_S Always Keeps An Open Mind About Stuff He's Never Tried.

The Only Thing (Other Than Onions And Bread Crumbs) That F_S Ever Tried To Put In Beef Meatballs Were Tiny Little Cubes Of Cheese He Had Cut Up. It Was A Good Idea In Theory, But In Reality Most Of The Cheese Cubes End Up On The Surface Of The Meatball, And Just Melt Right Out Of It During Cooking.

Meatballs should only consist of:

Garlic Powder and some chopped onions.

I also throw in a pinch of Rosemary, Salt & Pepper.

ive never heard of raisins in meatballs, but i would give it a try. i like trying new things.

on a side note though, my mom makes an appetizer for family events in which mini meatballs are served with a grape jelly/chili sauce. it may sound weird, but damn are they good.

I've never been a fan of raisins so I probably wouldn't like it. That just sounds like something that shouldn't be put in a meatball.

Raisins in meatballs can be PERFECTION.

My mom used to make a sauce that took all day... tons of fresh basil and she would cook the meatballs in the sauce. All beef... raisins (cut up) ... and they absorbed the flavor of the sauce. The basil, tomato and seasoning mellow out the raisin so it isn't overwhelming at all.

If you haven't tried it then invite me over for a day and I will convince you.. mama left me the recipe!

Raisins in meatballs, Fucking gross.
Raisins in the filling for empanadas, Outstanding!!

I think it has to do with the sauce, or lack thereof.

Ok. Back to the discussion.
Meatballs.
Use the 3 meats (Beef, veal, pork.) {also called meatloaf mix}
Salt, pepper, finely chopped omions, garlic powder, a dash of oregano and basil. Braise in the bottom of the pot with some olive oil. Put to the side. Save the oil/meat drippings for sauteeing the onions and garlic for the sauce.

Empanadas.

Beef. Salt, pepper, garlic powder, small raisins, chopped olives and chopped hard boiled egg. Fill the discos, crimp with a fork and fry.
Or do an egg wash and bake.

Meatballs should never go near raisins. one of my friends mothers made meatballs with raisins. They were nasty. I would chew the meatball and spit in my napkin the raisin. I have been told that this is very northern italian, northern italians arent real italian (imo lol) they have blonde hair/blue eyes. Northern Italy gets a lot of their cooking styles influenced by the Swiss so you can understand their adding a nasty ingredient like a raisin.

Im 100% Italian and 1st generation. Just saying so its not asked later.

Chimee

I think raisins would kinda take you out of the meatball eating experience. There you are enjoying a nice meatball and boom, there's a raisin. That would ruin it for me.

And since we're all clarifying, I'm not remotely Italian.

if my mom did that i'd be raisin hell

boo!

can't see raisins making any enhancement to a meatball. i usually use just ground beef but my ex always used the 'three types of meat' packet which i believe was chopped pork, beef, and veal??? breadcrumb, a little onion, crushed garlic, egg, oregano, salt, and pepper...

don't it suck when you take your meat out of the fridge and as your mixing all your ingredients your hands start going numb from the cold? i hate that...

As usual, I agree w/HT. Beef with raisins screams Empanada to me. You could throw a little bread crumb in the meatballs, or take some day old bread and soak it in some broth and mix it in. But not too much, just a little to absorb some of the juices as its baking.

For the Empanadas, try boiling the raisins in water first. They'll rehydrate pretty fast and make the filling more moist and last longer.

Actually, BD, I just braise the meatballs and put them to the side. Then when the sauce is bubblin, throw them, and the braised pork into the whole mix.
I know a few savages who put raw meatballs into the sauce, and let them cook that way.

Just wrong, you need that tasty fried texture, and the svachim from the cooking is perfect for the sauce base.

Exactly. I do the same, I just throw the meatballs in the sauce a little sooner. I like the way the sauce softens them up.

Nothing, nothing, nothing on this planet is better than (pre broiled) sausages that cook in the sauce for a few hours. Soft, tender and the casing practically disappears.

Ok this is the right way to do it. First you put some olive oil & real garlic cloves in a big giant pot with some sausage, chicken & pork & cook it until golden brown...then add the tomato sauce & tomato paste cook..while that is cooking in a seperate pot fry the meatballs with no raisins in olive oil until golden brown. Once all the meatballs are done throw them in the pot with a little bit of the oil from the meatballs (gives the sause a very nice flavor) Then just cook that all day for like 8 hrs.

I my mother fry's her meatballs. My grandmother bakes them sometimes but also put them raw in the gravy as well. The gravy cooks for 5-8 hours so the meatballs get cooked perfectly and the oils from the meatballs makes the gravy taste so good. I like baked or raw meatballs in the gravy better then fried. Fried meatballs get to hard and dont taste as good.

I make a fine sauce to. It's not as thick as hottub's. I made one yesterday with ground meat, sausage and chicken legs. My boys loved it.

I have never ever heard of putting chicken legs in gravy. I have had pork, meatballs, sausage. I have friend whose wife puts pepperoni in her gravy. When I head this I thought it would be nasty. Then I tried it and it has become my families new favorite. We dont add it everytime we have gravy but as a little treat every now and then it hits the spot.
