38 years ago today, humans from Earth walked on another world. There's one of them above, Buzz Aldrin of NJ walking on the Sea of Tranquility, July 20th 1969.
You can see Neil reflected in Buzz's visor if you look close:

You'd think we'd remember this more, celebrate the day more, but sadly, the audacity that got Neil and Buzz [and Mike] to the Moon is utterly gone.
Anyway, it's cool to think at one time we had the guts to do these things, something as insane as saying, the Moon? Fly to it? Land and walk around and return safely? No problem.
Can you imagine that? Seriously? Can you imagine the audacity?

I saw a program on National Geographic Channel recently where they tested the supposed photography clues that the moon landing was a hoax. Pretty much proved them all wrong. I think we did go there but its one of those things that the more you think about it the more amazing the achievment really becomes. Hope we go back there soon.

This is one of those days like 11/22/63 whereas everyone knows exactly where we were,I was massaging my Mom's (RIP) feet just so I could stay up and see this historic event on the old B&W Magnavox.

Giant steps are what you take
Walking on the moon
I hope my legs don't break
Walking on the moon
We can walk forever
Walking on the moon
We can live together
Walking on, Walking on the moon

Fantastic achievement. I'm not readily given to conspiracy theory, and I've to my crazy uncle rant on endlessly about how the whole lunar landing was faked in a movie studio - blah blah.
I was not born until 1975 so I only have my parents' recollections of the times and my own study of history and contemporary culture to inform me, but the Space Race was such an exciting thing happening at a pivotal point in our political and personal history. We were racing Russia to be the first to claim the moon, yes. But it seemed to be an event that unified people in wonderment at the achievements of humanity's mental and physical skills.
I am a giant nerd, anyone who reads my posts must have pin-pointed that by now, so it is no surprise that I am a Star-Trek Fan. I always thought of Star-Trek, especially TNG, as a picture of the new era of human exploration. What was so wonderful about the premise was that we had learned much from our past errors, were still prone to make mistakes based on our emotional responses, and still be able to make progress. I always hoped that our tentative explorations into our own small solar system might one day (in my lifetime, even!) yield contact with life outside of our planet. Current Martian explorations point to developments in this vein, and I am still hopeful.
Science holds so much power to simultaneously liberate humanity's minds and unify its objectives. I want to believe that the exploration of extraterrestrial bodies could bring the needed cooperation and peace to this planet. Sadly, in-fighting distracts us from achieving higher aims of humane existence.

If you believed they put a man on the moon, man on the moon.
If you believe there's nothing up my sleeve, then nothing is cool.

Thanks, Mike.
I'm sure you remember how we used to follow the launches and how at school they'd have a tv in the gym or cafeteria that some could watch.
I still look up on a clear night and am awed to think that we sent people all the way up there to walk on the thing, and also how risky it all was.
I miss snacking on Space Food Sticks, too............................
