Premieres tonight on AMC (http://media.amctv.com/originals/madmen/?s_cid=yahoo1)
Mad Men is AMC’s provocative new original series from writer and executive producer Matthew Weiner of The Sopranos. Set in 1960 New York, Mad Men pulls the viewer into an unexpected new world - the high-powered and glamorous “Golden Age” of advertising - where everyone is selling something and nothing is ever what you expect it to be.
I'll check it out since its a Sopranos alum. It doesn't sound like a great concept to me, but neither did the Sopranos when I first heard of it. The Ad business can be a completely upside down world, so it might be good.

I'm interested in seeing it since I always loved that life and time. For awhile I even thought about getting into marketing before realizing that I am probably not good enough.
I might wait until it gets further into the season since I'm not particularly interested in starting a new series now. Also seeing people do things that I wish I could do that might, at some point, have been accomplishable kind of depresses me.

Being "in the biz", I think I'll check it out.
But I don't think times have changed that much since then.
The pretty girls get hired and eveybody fucks everyone else. Literally. I don't even know why most of these folks are married.

ill check it out just for the period piece aspect of it
but the nostalgia of a time i didnt live in will wear off so it'll need some good writing to keep me on board

Not bad. Some interesting story lines, some good characters. I'll tune in again next week.
One thing that stands out is how different everybody talked, routinely saying things that would you fired immediately nowadays. And how different the women were in so many ways as compared to today. Interesting stuff.

but the nostalgia of a time i didnt live in I'm glad I'm not the only one who feels this way. I was born in 83 and have no desire to go back to the 80s or 90s. But a time like the 70s or 60s or especially the 1920s seem so much cooler than 80s-00s.

I've been watching the first season on On Demand. I didn't catch it while it on regular TV, but it's really good. I recommend it for a couch-ridden sunday hangover.
The blatant sexism, racism, and alcoholism of the sixties culture is hilarious.

Mine too. Definitely.
This season's going really, really slowly tho, just like the beginning eps of last season.
I was even watching the time.
One thing that occurred to me was that some scenes were unnecessary or mebbe unnecessarily long for what little information was gleaned from them.
I'm certainly not giving up tho. I hung on last season & felt I was duly rewarded for it.
pete campbell is a douche of epic proportions.
Hands down best character.
I think about the show a little more than is necessary or healthy. Earlier I realized that he n Don are really very similar. And I mean the fact that they are both sociopaths/don't know what they're doing/don't really feel anything/want more than anything to be in control or appear to be in control (at work & at home). From last season I can think of more examples of Don losing control than Pete.
They are both so needy in the way they demand respect from others/need to keep up appearances.
Pete definitely has the most potential. His downfall is that he's younger & hasn't quite learned how to hide his hunger &/or rage. I can't help but think it's already too late for Don. I don't mean the Duck factor either. I can only foresee one trick pony Don fighting & fighting to keep his position there until there is nothing left of him whereas I can see Pete shooting off in any number of directions.

I searched and didn't find a thread. How there isn't a thread for the best show on television, I don't know.
But season 3 begins this Sunday on AMC at 10pm.
Where we last left off:
Peggy got a new haircut and a new office. Just told Pete about having his baby and giving it away.
Joan is engaged to be married to a handsome doctor, but all is not well. He basically raped her in Don's office.
Duck Phillips worked a deal to sell Sterling Cooper to the Brits. Now they are in control and he is president.
Roger left Mona for the maddeningly hot Jane. Despite her age, they are to be married.
Betty, oh Betty. She found out she was pregnant with child #3. Then goes and cheats on Don with some man in a bar bathroom. Somewhat of payback for his infidelity.
Don went on a 3 week disappearance in California. We learned a little bit more about Dick Whitman. Upon returning home, his marriage is in shambles and his company was sold. But he doesn't work under a contract and has a ton of money from the sale. Will he venture out on his own? Will he and Betty move on with their relationship?
I can't wait for this season. It should be a year or so in the future. The British invasion is in full force, both the company and the Beatles.
The show is exquisitely crafted and perfectly acted. I am so glad Matt Weiner came back to run things. Should be a great season.

Well, season 2 is free On Demand. Probably only until the season starts. But you can catch the last few to be all caught up.
I have season 1 on DVD so I rewatched the last few weeks. Just incredibly good, even the 2nd time.

great wrap-up hammer. I love this show, and have both seasons (plus my sigs). Don could be one of the best male characters in television history. do you know what year it will be in? I'm going with 1966 or 1967. All i know is that JFK will be shot, but they wont dwell on the subject all that much (trying to not be hack like some shows might)
the show has a great way of dealing with products, movements, peoples, and social situations they way it would realistically have happened then, and not some shitty acting nor oddly pointing out something from that era (that 70s show, that 80s show, most period movies).

And Pete is such a worm with that office dance after the promotion. Or half promotion. I love Kenny, can't wait to see them square off.

I'm pretty much the same way. It really is a show to be taken as a whole. When taken individually, each episode isn't overly impressive and nothing major usually happens. Almost like the anti-Lost.
The show is relaxed, slow paced but each action is thoughtful and has meaning. The look, the acting, and the overall themes that play out make it so great.

I have to admit, as the lawnmower sound got lounder and louder in the background while Joan and Peggy talked, I cringed. You could see that something over the top was coming a mile away. For me, this was the first moment in the shows run that felt clumsy and forced. I was more dissapointed in the poor set-up than the great payoff.

I love the unspoken subtleties of the show - like in the episode when Betty gave birth, and Dan met that babbling asshole prison guard. The guy was all gung-ho in the waiting room, not even seeming to take in the nurse telling him that the baby was born breach.
Later Dan passed the guy wheeling his wife down the hallway (presumably going home), and when the guy saw Dan he angrily glowered and looked down, averting his eyes and not speaking or making any contact - not even to follow up and ask Dan about his baby. Clearly the implication was that something bad happened with that couples baby - but you're left to wonder what.
It brings to mind The Sopranos and that Russian in the woods - what ever happened to him? Did he escape? Did he die out there? We never found out.
Unanswered questions - just like in real life.
And by the way, what's Dan's problem with Roger?

yeah; it was that weird / awkward thing.
her character in general is pretty awkward- sometimes wanting to be strong, sometimes being passive.
the season is strengthening as it's going along.
Also Cooper made that comment "and who is really signing this contract anyway"- did they ever explicitly say that he knows about Don's real past, or is this the first we see that he may know?

"And who are you supposed to be?"
Not only the best episode of the season, but I believe the best of the series. The tension from when Don pulls up to his house and the moment he walks in and hears his kids on, was a fucking panic. Then the thought immediately goes from the chick in the car to his entire past coming to light. Just the way it played out was amazing.
Perfectly acted and perfectly written. I have no idea where the show goes from here, I thought they would have the Dick Whitman story hang over the entire series.
With the last couple weeks and the momentum they have going into the Kennedy assassination in the finale, this already is and will be some of the best television ever.
Good episode except there was not enough Joan.

What an incredibly satisfying and well written season finale. Divorce, back-stabbing, Joan and getting kicked in the face by a horse.
The best 4 episodes of any show that's ever aired. And now the show is kinda going in another direction.
I don't know if they can keep the brilliance with Don's secret being revealed to Betty (I thought that was the lynch pin to the show) but I'll give them the benefit of the doubt.

The closer was amazing.
Pete really is a douche but there are 8.5 million reasons to keep him around and I like that he just fucked Peggy out of anger.
Too bad Sal Romano left. I liked his character. Too bad that fire alarm went off. Why did he leave anyway? I know they gutted the art dept. but was there some other reason?
I bet Betty returns unmarried to that old man Harry or whatever his name is. Probably not - but maybe.

I'm dying to see Draper post-Betty and on his own. And what the fuck is the new agency gonna look like. Here's something to get you in the mood, cawksuckas:
Ya I am pumped about seeing how this new agency pans out. I just saw the pilot last weekend and then watched seasons 1-3 in the next couple days. I was really impressed, after breaking bad I was hoping it would be good as well. Was able to avoid ever seeing an episode till the other day.
I thought season 1 was amazing. One of the most impressive first seasons I have seen on TV. Draper and Sterling are just awesome when they are together so when they were beefing in season 3 it was a bummer. That scene where they just got back from getting trashed at lunch and the elevator was broken was one of my favorite scenes yet. Cracked my shit up.
So ya looking forward to Sunday, I just got lucky in my timing of watching seasons 1-3 I had no idea 4th season was about to start.

Sal got fired cause he didnt bang the lucky strike guy. It was Sterling Coopers biggest account worth 25 mil so Draper had to fire him to keep lucky strike from leaving their agency. The lucky strike guy was embarassed and wanted him gone.

Put the Santa suit on Roger...lol
Creepy kid is an interesting twist. He trashes all of the house except Don's daughter's. He left her a lanyard too. Betty Draper has faded into the background for now. Her new husband is a creep too.
Don and his alcohol problem are getting interesting.
All of this reminds me of a B&W movie I saw a few years ago...trying to think of the name of it. :wallbash:

All of the characters are pissing me off for some reason and i don't know why. I am far less irritated by Pete than i am Peggy. Don & Betty are truly sad, i doubt it will be soon but it's just a matter of time before they're back together-it seems like they feed off each other too much to be apart.

The whole episode felt off for me. Don wasn't Don for even 1 minute of it. He is either a slobbering drunk who can't think straight and blacks out while a chick is blowing him or a giddy fur-coat salesman trying to blow Sterling just to get a job. What happened to the Don that could drink half a Jack Daniels bottle before breakfast and pitch a perfect Marlboro tag at lunch? And even as a car salesman he was all swagger and none of the sissy "I want to get in the door" bullshit that he showed with Sterling.
I get what they were trying to do, show him spiraling downward and the drinking finally affecting his work, but I think we've seen that in the past and it was done far better, it didn't need an episode.
The show is hit and miss. One episode it's the greatest drama on TV, well-deserving of an emmy, the next, it's complete and utter shit.

Yeah, but as soon as she stood up for herself, Don put her in her right place. She's been a copywriter for what 2-3 years, and she wants credit for the one successful pitch she did out of 50 crappy ones that Don changed to actually work for a commercial. Peggy is a whiny bitch. And what is it with the longing looks at Pete and Trudy. She hides a pregnancy from the biological father, then abandons the baby to the care of an unloving and bitter grandmother, it's her damn fault. Because Trudy is now showing and was patting Peggy on the back saying that she "still has time". Also, i thought for a moment the remark Peggy had made about having to pee more often was going to ring a bell for Trudy but then Peggy's face after she said it just made me sad.

Nah i don't think so. Peggy stood up for herself and that's that, Don can't undo the fact that she spoke up to him and neither can she, she let her feelings be heard and didn't stifle them any longer. The entire thing with Campbell is based on the fact that it was her first time having sex, it was a one night stand on the night before his wedding and she didn't even know she was pregnant!!! She gave her baby up because she was not emotionally or psychologically capable of caring for it herself, which is a lot of unintentional mothers of that time succumbed to (whether or not this is what their heart wanted was besides the fact). Her being a copywriter for 2-3 years still says a lot about her, given both the time period this show is taking place during, the nature of the business she is in and the fact that she is a woman. Look around, the only other females in the office are secretaries, her being a copywriter and still maintaining the same position over a 2-3 year period says a lot about what she is ultimately capable of.

The person that couldn't come up with an obituary? Yup, there was love there.
The way I read it is that Cooper was seeing his own mortality in the death of his onetime secretary, so he was overreacting to it and was showing that emotion, but couldn't back it up with anything meaningful from his history with that woman, outside of her always being there as the secretary. The best he could do was the astronaut tag line - which is all it was - a marketing slogan for the death of a woman he cared about as much about as the hundreds of clients who came and went.

Agree on the first point. What I liked about most of this season was the writers taking Draper down a peg or two. This last secretary seems like they're going to the poonani well once too often but they've got two more episodes to make it all fit.
Not sure about the Sterling prediction though. I'll put $2 on the swerve that his dopey book gets misinterpreted as wisdom and becomes a big hit. I think the zeitgeist of the show includes the fact that rich kids usually do alright for themselves, usually in spite of themselves.

I think you guys are being a little hard on the show. One of the narrative arcs of this season was how would Don's personal life develop post-divorce. They started him down the "wild dog" path, humping everyone (and thing) he crossed paths with. Then he was presented with a choice: an incredibly hot woman who was his peer in the business world, an equal who would be more of a "challenge" to him but also showed she was willing to sacrifice her professional reputation to support his career (leaking the Heinz info) or an incredibly hot younger woman who would be slotted into a supporting, adoring wife role albeit with some flashes of smarts and good maternal instincts (keeping the kids under control with charm and the "It's only a milkshake" scene).
A more evolved Don Draper would have chosen Faye but he instead went with the new (& presumably improved) version of Betty, because 1. It's still all about Don & his ego and 2. It's still the mid-1960's and the feminist world view has not made it into the American zeitgeist, although we see the sprouts of it through Peggy & Joan.
I think the very last scene is a wink to the audience that we know that Don made the wrong choice even if he doesn't (yet).
Also, Peggy looked crushed when she spoke to Don.
Betty too when Don told her he was engaged.
I liked the part when Don's son asked "Who's Dick?" and he says "it's my nickname".
Yep....I can think of several people who would agree.

Thinking about the way he proposed to Megan is making me lol. She was all perfect and unconscious in the bed and then the whole "I feel like myself when I'm with you"...Don, least of all knows who he really is, he's an image, a vapor.
At this point I feel that I'm watching it more for Peggy,Joan and Pete than anything else.

I thought it was a fantastic episode. I was shocked when he got engaged but after he got the ring from the niece i had a feeling something was going to happen with that.
the ending with Bets waiting around for him was great. You could tell she wanted to get a little Don Draper in her 1 last time or maybe she was trying to get him back because she realized life with the new guy isnt that great either? I wonder if Don in the bed at the end wide awake was meant to show him now thinking about Betty or regretting that he got engaged?
I thought one of the best parts was Creepy Glen telling off Betty. She proved her cuntiness seconds later when she fired Carla.

After letting it sink in for a day, the ending wasn't that bad. It is a soapy show and they do let themes and ideas fall off the table from week to week but all in all a good close to the season.

It's $35 for the whole season in HD (basically what a DVD set would cost) and a few bucks cheaper for standard def. it's probably not the cheapest option, but it's less than what a month of cable would cost me.

If you're cool with SD, you can get the season pass for $22.99. The $35 is the cost for HD.
So it's not that you're comparing the price to a standard DVD, you compare it to the price of the Blu-Ray set. Which makes it an even better deal.
Don't have it yet, but I'm guessing it won't be around until it airs on the West Coast as well, so probably no sooner than 1 AM EDT.

It is a little expensive, but I get to keep the episodes, so I'll basically have a digital copy of the season 5 Blu-ray by the end of the season, minus bonus features. If I were to reactivate my cable just to watch Mad Men (I don't watch a lot of TV), I'd have to pay that extra $30 for each month the season runs, which would probably wind up costing me something closer to $90 in the end.

The whole thing of that one whore following Don around, finally ending up in him strangling her, was pretty fucked up. I know it was all Don's delirious fever dream, but that was much darker than this show ever goes, usually
But, then again, since the Richard Speck mass murder formed the thematic backdrop to this episode, it was gonna be pretty damn dark anyway. That final shot of Sally hiding under the couch from her awful bitch of a grandmother and her pretty much equally awful mother and stepfather, like the sole survivor of Speck's rampage, was heartbreaking. And what the fuck is with that new kid, Ginsberg? "Hey, let's play on women's rape fantasies to sell shoes!" He's really fucked up.
All in all, one of the darkest episodes of this show they've ever done.

Quite a sudden switch this week. The previous episodes of this season seemed to show Pete in ascendancy, eclipsing Roger. He'd taken the credit for getting Mohawk Airlines back, and he seemed to be gaining more and more power at SCDP. But this episode seemed to show him completely falling apart.
I thought it was fucking hilarious that when it became apparent that Lane and Pete were going to fight, not only did Don, Roger, and Bert not do anything to stop it, they seemed to want to see it as much as anyone. I'm shocked Roger didn't start taking bets. My money would have been on Lane.

Cool episode. Don thinks Zuby Zoo is dead, Sterling drops acid and Peggy jerks off a stranger. But they all reach the epiphany they needed about their relationships. They all realize the truth and become more honest. And then Cooper drops the ultimate truth bomb on Draper at the end. Kind of brilliant.
Any episode without Betty or Sally immediately loses a few points with me, but this one is prob one of the better "stand alone" episodes in the series.
The scene with Roger dropping acid while the Beach Boys' "I Just Wasn't Made for These Times" is playing on a reel-to-reel in the background is one of those details that makes this such a great show.

And of course Roger cracked me up: "I know I should be the voice of reason but is there anyone who DOESN'T want to see this?"
I also loved Lane's line just before the fight started: "His wife found chewing gum on his pubis!" and then all of them started laughing.

Yeah and then him looking into the mirror with the black and white hair was funny too.
You know, I think they did a fairly good job capturing what an acid trip is really like. They usually show all kinds of trippy colors and play cheesy psychedelic rock (usually something like "White Rabbit") and it looks like something Peter Maxx threw up. I've only done it once or twice myself, but it's usually far more subtle than that. I remember there being periods where everything looked normal, and then something like what Roger saw would happen: a picture would move, I'd hear a song that couldn't be playing anywhere, etc.
I'm not sure I'd ever do it again, but that episode made me think about it a little bit, at least. That may have been one of the most blatantly pro-drugs things I've ever seen on mainstream TV. And it's still having effects on the show: Roger really does seem happier and mroe sure of himself since it happened.
