Too much Cool Whip.

And a nice touch using "Tomorrow Never Knows" at the end.

It worked best thematically with the episode. The lyrics of "For No One" or "She Said She Said" might have actually been a little more on point for the situation -- I mean, "For No One" would have really worked as a message Megan was sending Don -- but "Tomorrow Never Knows" was the perfect choice, because it really shows how much the world is moving on, maybe beyond what Don can handle. I mean, the episode begins with a client saying they want to do a commercial that looks like "A Hard Day's Night", and that song shows that even the Beatles were well past that by this point.

And so, of course, it made perfect sense that Don only made it about halfway through the song before he shut it off and went to bed.

And leave Betty alone! Shes weighing her food, shes doing the steps. Her selfishness and psychological child abuse is just classic Betty.

The best part of seeing fatass Betty last night was when it became clear that her little plan to try to fuck up Don and Megan's marriage by having Sally ask them about Anna had failed, that they'd come clean and Sally was cool with it. That little deflated pout she gave...Betty's always been a horrible person, but this episode she crossed that line into being just evil.

Pete gets more and more pathetic. Dreaming about how a NY Times Magazine article is going to get him laid, freezing everyone else out of it, and then they don't even make the magazine. And it was hilarious how he basically admitted to that guy he wanted to bang his wife, and the other guy just thought it was a joke. What a pathetic piece of shit.

My favorite Roger line of the night, asking how Jewish the Manischewitz guys were going to be: "Fiddler On The Roof, the cast or the audience?"

I thought the significance of Don's speech was that it showed him deciding to start giving a shit about his job again. I mean, there was a scene earlier in that episode where he was basically sleeping in his office.

Lane continues to get more and more pathetic. There's no way he gets away with forging that check.

Poor Peggy, that lobster looked delicious.

Eh, I've eaten at The Palm and their steaks and even their chicken parm are better than their lobster.

Back on point - I think Weiner has done a great job with the narrative arcs of Joan & Peggy. Although they are similar in age (although I assume Joan is a few years older) and in intelligence (although with different skill sets) they are in very different paradigms. Joan is stuck in the old school "women succeed in life by being sexually attractive and by playing that one card wisely" mode whereas Peggy, although she has actually doing more fucking by my count, has trail blazed the view that a woman can succeed by forcing the power structure (ie. men) to judge her on her work alone with the poonani being a side issue at best. Nicely played.

PS Last week's bar scene with Joan & Don seems like foreshadowing now, especially when Don is leaving and basically telling Joan to "Go on, fuck him" re: the guy giving her the eye at the other end of the bar.

PPS Pete Campbell has to be the biggest (and best/worst) creep on any TV show I've watched.

KnoxHarrington

The most infuriating thing about that episode (not because it was badly done, or it doesn't work with the plot) is that you know that Pete being such a total piece of shit has probably saved his career, or at least given him a lot more influence and power within SCDP. I mean, that character's arc this season seems to have been him unraveling, both personally and professionally. Now he does something just totally shitty, and that probably means he's back on top again. Of course, that's how corporate life works anyway, and the show nailed that. Scummy, damn near psychopathic behavior often gets you ahead.

I had a feeling Lane would do it but they way it played out in this episode really showed how far he had fallen: getting caught with the forged check, trying to justify why he did it, begging to keep his job so he could keep his visa and stay in the U.S., the awkward comment to Joan about picturing her in a bikini, his loving wife whom he cheated on buying him that Jaguar because he "never did anything for himself" and his failed first attempt at suicide. Jared Harris really went out with a great performance.

And one of the best scenes was Sally getting her first period and running home to her surprised mother who responded with a rare display of maternal love for her daughter. Betty redeemed herself for being such a stuck-up, selfish bitch earlier in the episode.

His lifestyle was built on a financial house of cards. He kept his wife in the dark so she kept spending on "essentials" that he had to go into debt for and this was way before debt became the standard way people lived like it is now. He would have lost his visa and have to return to Britain where, let's not forget, the only firm that would have known his work would have been the one he screwed over to let Draper & Crew start their own shop.

The poor bastard had painted himself into a corner and his reputation, which he clearly valued by the opening scene where he was pretty pleased with himself at getting chosen for that acctg. group's board, would have been ruined.

All that said, I saw the joke with the Jaguar coming from a mile away and still LOLed when the car wouldn't start.

Matthew Weiner and whoever directed this season finale brought their A game IMO. A lot of strong scenes and character development/reveals - I even felt a twinge of sympathy for Pete Campbell at one point - followed up with some laugh out loud, low brow pins to the balloon to keep things from getting overwrought.

I don't want to get into spoilers until everyone has had a chance to catch up but I will say the image of the partners in the new space was good but that Don's final scene was so great that Scorsese would be proud if he had done it (and the follow-up scene highlighting the "high/low" theme they've been developing all season was unexpected and perfect).

Kudos to all.

From Don's weird-ass "Hawaii, a great place to commit suicide" ad, to Roger's mother and, apparently more importantly, his shoeshine guy dying, and that annoying ass doorman collapsing in the lobby, the whole thing just kept returning to death.

Matthew Weiner, of course, got his first big break in television writing for The Sopranos, and I think that there's a very Sopranos-like element in this show: a character that was once necessary to the plot, but now is just sort of still hanging around and brings the show to a halt when she's around.

Yes, Betty is this series' Dr. Melfi. I'm tempted to just start dragging that scrubbing bar to the right when she shows up on screen.

Ken Cosgrove's reaction to that line was equally great.

It kind of showed that Ken didn't really understand that the only reason they have Vicks is that because Pete's father-in-law threw the business his way, and so this goes beyond just seeing a client shitfaced somewhere. Makes you wonder if, in the larger sense, this is kind of the beginning of Pete being exposed for the fraud he is.

Besides, I went back and watched that episode. That "big black prostitute" was probably 150 lbs tops, not 200 like Pete said. She was definitely bootylicious, but not the fat monster Pete said she was.

I was surprised because big women were seen as sexy back then, not like now where guys basically want to fuck skinny boys.

I wonder what the actress thought about it. The way she was portrayed as a big black monster.

It struck me that as fucked up as Dick Whitman/Don Draper's past is, I really did think that the "grandma" who broke in could truly be some woman who raised him, not just a burglar. And you gotta wonder if this just drives home to Sally how little she knows about her father.

Good to see Betty was not letting the trauma her children were just through get in the way of her being a total cunt.

Doesn't that place have a door man? How was she allowed in?

I see a fired doorman in the future..

I want to listen to the record that that sleazeball Bob was listening to, because apparently it works. He's gone from damn near getting fired to being a big man on the Chevy account, and mostly because he just stands around in the right place at the right time, offering the partners a cup of coffee in one of those stupid Greek cups.

And then I remembered poor Sal in that projection room with him...

In case you're one of those people who tries to gather some sort of clue about where the show is going from the song that they use on the episode, then you'll be interested to know that the song that ended this last episode, as Don lay curled up in a fetal position after being totally destroyed by Peggy, is "Porpoise Song" by the Monkees, which was the title song from their movie "Head." Pay special attention to what is going on at the beginning of this clip.

Everybody was Kungfu falling?

It's kind of hard to tell from that video (and I'm too damn lazy to find a better one), but the whole sequence is basically the Monkees jumping off a bridge.

And, of course, it harkens back to Don's poor attempt at swimming last week.

I found myself spending more time watching Roger, Jim, and Ted's faces as Don told his heartwarming story about how a whore used to buy him Hershey's bars out of the money he'd helped her steal out of a john's pockets.

That season finale really set up the final season of this series well.

The final season will be done just like Breaking Bad, divided into 2 seven episode parts, separated by a year. Yay!

That would take forever to cook. And try cooking it halfway through, then sticking it in the freezer, and then cooking it some more a year later. You're just asking for food poisoning.

So I'm rewatching the entire series with my wife, who slept while I watched it on Netflix, after her bedtime. Anyway, has anybody else noticed the MASH influence on the writers? I mean, Roger is written much like Hawkeye, Pete is Frank Burns, and maybe Joan is a little Hotlips. I don't know if this is an original thought, I admit I haven't read all 15 pages here, but it's become so obvious to me that I refuse to be wrong.
