View Full Version : Five Guys, pricey...

while ago, Ron and Fez talked about Five Guys hamburgers and fries. I mentioned on this very board about how I'm not paying 11 bucks for a fucking hamburger, fries and a drink. Plenty of people on here told me that you can get a burger and stuff for 6 to 7 bucks.

actual receipt:

Burger - 5.39
reg fry - 2.39
soft drink - 1.69

sub total - 9.47
tax - 0.67

total - $10.14

for a fucking double cheeseburger, fries and drink, its right over 10 bucks?? Granted, the food was good....but thats too much.

for the record, a little cheeseburger would have been 1 dollar cheaper.

Me and my buddies make a point to go there every once and a while. It is a very fine establishment, and by that I mean the place has a really nice atmosphere. As for the food... burgers can't be matched. Mayo, pickles, tomatoes on a bacon cheeseburger please. I skip the fries because the burger is good enough to fill me up. Compared to a fast food place it is somewhat steep, but if you go to even a diner, you will be paying atleast that for the same meal, lesser quality.

A burger and fries at McDonalds and Burger King are fast food because they are prepared to get to you fast. Any food at McDonalds and Burger King are fast food.

But if you prepared the same in your backyard, or went to a sit-down restaurant that has burger and fries, it's not fast food.

The Five Guys fixed the food as fast as it could for us customers, so I would call that fast food.
Plus, it was in an establishment.

if its prepared in my backyard, it is not fast food because I prepared it myself.

I think this really falls into how its prepared, so with that point....Its both prepared the same. Which I would think would make it fast food.

To me, Fuddruckers is a children's restaurant - like a Chuck E. Cheese. The burgers are pressed into uniformity and have no difference from one to the other to the point of no flavor, except that of ass. No difference from a High School cafeteria, which I guess some dig.

To keep things musically - Fuddruckers is Black Diamond (a Kiss Tribute Band) and Five Guys is Fugazi.

Enough of the "opinion," though - how about some facts:

Five Guys = fresh meat, no preservatives, not frozen, burger patties made right there (so, no - they are not "pre-fab")

Fuddruckers acknowledges it has TOO MANY HEALTH VIOLATIONS (http://www.healthinspections.com/articles.cfm?YXJ0aWNsZUlEPTI2).

Five Guys fries rocks the fat ass (literally!...errr...yeah) - all the Five Guys I've been to are VERY generous with their fries - too much so. More times than not, fries and a junior burger from Five Guys will be more than enough for me.

In & Out and Five Guys both keep their menus simple and neither use frozen meat. "Fresh" meat makes the difference, imo. However, of the two, Five Guys is the one closest to me - unless I choose to move to Nevada, Arizona or California. Side by side I'd still pick Five Guys.

Red Robin - crap, crap, crappity, crap crap

Cheeseburger Cheeseburger - never heard/seen of them

Fat Burger - someone brought them up to me yesterday and was swearing by them; will have to check 'em out.

Cowboy Cafe - a sit down bar/restaurant chain in the DC area had pretty good burgers last time I went to one - Mondays was "half price burger night" - a little undercooked at times, but they were not stingy.

w00t. That's right down the road from where I am. Can't wait. I go to one in Va when I am down there and it's the best fast food burger I have ever had. I just hope the one near here will be good as I am told that every location is a little different.

As for Cheeburger, I went there expecting Five Guys like goodness but was left very disappointed. It did not come close to what Five Guys offers.

As for best burger ever, my vote is for Jackson Hole in NYC. That place was amazing and the only burger I have bought out that can beat Five Guys.

The one on Columbia Pike - across from Bob & Ediths closed about a year ago (supposedly that Giant is going to expand) - it was sketchy, but kind of cool. The fact that it didn't look welcoming was a big plus in my book - of course, now that it's closed, it shouldn't look too welcoming.

Riding around Delaware, Pa., Maryland, Five Guys are opening everywhere. They are friggin' awesome, but I worry about over-franchise-ation. Real word?

Down here in Bristol we have the Burger Bar which sounds similar to Five Guys. They lay the claim to serving Hank Williams Sr. his last meal while he was traveling in 1953. Dont even fuck with the fries - you cant eat the whole burger.

They need to be careful with their franchising. The food at the one in Reagan airport is very mediocre. Yeah, I know airport food in general sucks, but a lot of first time customers aren't going to make that distinction.

It seems kind of expensive, but people are right...if you check out the fast food joints these days, to get something comparable, if it's around $9-10 at Five Guys, it's $7-$8 at a fast food place.

I like Five Guys a lot. There's a few here in Delaware, notiably one on Concord Pike (Rt. 202) and one in New Castle/Bear (Rt. 40).

The atmosphere is great, they offer a better variety of toppings for your burgers (fried onions), and they don't fuck it up like if you try to order it a specific way, unlike trying to do so at a fast food place.

The fries are amazing, but I recommend not over-eating them...as much as I like them, I've eaten a few too many on occasion, and let's just say you 'feel it.'

And you have to love a place with complimentary peanuts.

We're a little lucky in DE, because we've got a place called Jake's which is very comparable with Five Guys (depending on who you ask, one's slightly better than the other). There's about four of them, and there's a CheeBurger CheeBurger right across the state line in Chadds Ford, PA.

Agreed with the franchising thought...that's the one thing that could kill Five Guys.

Plus the larger the chain gets, soon the ingredients start to suffer.

i was excited (but not overly so) when we were ordering five guys burgers at work earlier this week. everyone spoke so highly of them here. what a letdown. first, what moron there decided "let's call our double-cheeseburger a cheeseburger and our cheeseburger a little cheeseburger"?? i knew that little quirk going in, but it's still idiotic. i ordered the double-cheeseburger with whopper toppings (lettuce, tomatoes, mayo, pickle, ketchup, onion). what a disappointment! it was a good burger, don't get me wrong, but nothing special. very similar in taste to a wendy's burger (always fresh, never frozen). mildly above-average for a fast food burger, but nothing more. as i've stated before, nothing that everyone raves so much about can ever be as good as the hype, everyone loves it mainly because everyone else does (yeah, i'm looking at you in-and-out burger...and ipods). and their cajun fries were worse than most fries i've ever had.

they dont do curly fries, unless you guys have some wacky franchises up there. and if you're getting five guys delivered to you at work, id almost say dont bother-its so fucking sloppy delicious everything is gonna be soggy 5 minutes after its made. try eating it at the restaurant next time and see if you dont like it more

This post makes me sad.

Five Guys is the best burger place going out there, blows just about everything else away. I just went last week and it was just as delicious as it was the first time I went in VA years ago.

Their fries are also amazing, some of the best around cooked in that delicious peanut oil.

Yum.

I sent a bunch of the old guys at my gym to the one in Watchung for their weekly old man lunch meeting, they all came back the next day raving about how it was one of the tastiest burgers they have had in a while.

Five Guys: Ron Bennington Approved.

(In-N-Out burger stinks)

(Jackson Hole in NYC is better than Five Guys)

i see it as a different thread (kind of an homage to the tastykakes thread (http://ronfez.net/forums/showthread.php?t=70547)) and am saddened by this reckless merge. there are so many worse ones that never get merged even after repeated requests. boo mods.

and it's still a glorified wendy's (with less options), so fuck everyone who loves going there. trendy fuckin' sheep.

Yeah, I've never been overly impressed with them either. The burgers are good but nothing to really get excited about. I didn't care for their Cajun fries, but I think I'm pickier than most when it comes to fries. If you ask me Red Robin is a much better burger chain.

There were at least 6 five guys threads. This one stuck out because on the first page someone was already trashing them.

Having been to the original locations there is a bit of a dropoff from them to the all the locations that have sprung up all over the east coast. But it's still cooks the food to order, keeps it simple and has a shitload of toppings. So it couldn't be any more different from a wendys or burger king.

I just don't get the 'I don't like so f$&% you because you do' attitude. You don't like it, fine. More for me...

dude, that's exactly what wendy's does, unlike burger king or mcdonald's.

and the attitude wasn't "you like them and i don't" it's "they taste exactly like a more common chain, but since they're a smaller outfit, we'll act like it's in some way different."

so I go to the wendy's I can get a burger with mayo, sauteed onions, mushrooms, and jalepenos--wait for five minutes for them to cook it in front of you and I will get it?

Someone at five guys must have played a funny trick on you and gave you a burger from somewhere else.

Wer got a five guys over here in the lehigh valley PA. I finally went recently after about a year of passing by it. The place is great! I loved the burger and the fries were very good. The peanuts available to pick at was a nice gimmick. I don't think its anything like wendys, maybe besides both having good quality meat. Ron Bennington approved, now Contra approved!

i actually think the fries are their best attribute. the burger is just that, a burger. ive had a million of them in my life (999,900 of them good) and ill have a million more. but those fries had good flavor and there are always more in the bag then i can ever dream of eating.

I think there is one at that shopping center (its open now?), but the one I went to was all the way down tilghman street about 5 minutes past tilghman 8 movie theater.
