...decorating my new house when it's not even bought yet?

Every day, I pour over MLS listings, looking for the house that's perfect, even though I'm a year away from buying it.

I know one of the first projects I want to do is make a finished basement. Laugh at me, but yes, I'm going to make a mancave with a kegerator, video games, and sports memorabilia. Tray ceiling, bathroom, bar and neon. Yes, it's cheesey and cliche.

Upstairs will be a re-done master bedroom, a nursery, my office, and Liz's office/guest room.

Flat screen, a fence, faucets and furniture. Siding, shingles, see-saws and sunrooms. This is what I think about ever since we got married.

It's why I started the real estate thread. I lived in a two family house and I was given the opportunity to partially renovate the downstairs half and I had a blast doing it. I want to do it again, and this time, call it my own.

Was anyone else like this when you started looking for your first new house?

I'll be moving in September. It's an older house that needs work. IMO...A lot of work. I'll be moving in with my girlfriend to save money for a house. Her older brother owns it, so the rent will be cheap. I'm used to living in a newer place w/central air, very clean, etc.... I don't mind footing the bill for some of the repairs, and I'm actually looking forward to transorming the place.

I'm just not sure it can be done. I really want an opinion whether it's worth it or not. I don't want to make it just tolerable, I really want it to be nice.

Starters:

PINK BATHTUB
All of the kitchen cabinets need replacing upper/lower
Replace linolium floors w/ hardwood in kitchen
New Carpet in bedrooms and livingroom
Bathroom re-worked and tiled
It's just old

Upside:

Our own backyard
Cheap
Quite neighborhood...i hope
bigger kitchen
another bedroom
Kitchen is above a basement-not ground/all pipes will be accessible

Will it be worth it?

Tenbats.... I know the feeling.. my wife and I just purchased our first house a couple of months ago.

The little things we've been able to do differently (ie changing the cabinet hardware) bring us joy each day. Now we're looking to redo our master bathroom (too pink for us!) at the moment.. so we've been batting around ideas about that.

Good luck with the house hunt!!!!!!!!!!

Not at all my friend. Go ahead and plan it out and dream.

It'll suck the money and the life right out of you. But when you do get the occasional opportunity to enjoy it, I guess it's all worth it.

10 years, broke as a spoke and still not done.

11 years for me and I'm in the same situation, with a second mortage so that we could get the kitchen and roof done last summer. Still, it's a great investment.

it is nice to have dreams, but I have a feeling your basement project will not be getting done for a while. I am sure as wonderfull as liz is, she is going to have more pressing things to do with your new tighy budget than let you redo the basement, esp. if you are planning on having kids which it seems like you are.

for me buying a house seems kind of far off, but I look forward to doing outside work like landscaping.

Are you kidding me? I've been at my place of employment for 6 years and have my own cash to spend on my pet projects. . .and if that means redecorating any rooms because the last owners painted them pink, so be it.

The finished basement is an investment in our continued happiness: it'll keep him occupied (and two floors away) when I need sleep and will allow both of us to watch whatever TV shows we want to without complaining. Besides, he needs somewhere that he can watch football without me asking silly questions. . .Dad is not a sports fan, so we didn't really pay attention to professional sports growing up.

I, on the other hand, am looking forward to having a backyard and, I hope, a garden.

If it was ever finished you'd just want to start all over again!
