Tonight I watched the Last Waltz for the first time. As with other confessions, I'm ashamed to admit this, but it's true. Great fuckin' docum..., I'm sorry, rockumentary. Great music, and Van the Man does have a great spot in the show.
Now there are other great flicks that I haven't seen, and have no excuse for doing so, so I imagine I'll be doing this confession again.
So have you seen anything for the first time lately that you should have seen long ago? And did it live up to the hype? For me, The Last Waltz did.

a few years back I watched gone with the wind. it was OK, nothing earth moving for me. I can appreciate its place in history and all that shit, but i guess I am not a big enough film buff for it to make a huge impact on me.

Week-
You are missing out. The Die Hard movies are not that earth-shattering by themselves- you've seen it all in other big hollywood action flicks. However, the first one is the first movie that I can remember that threw you back into the seat and didn't let you take a breath for almost two hours.
It redefined the action movie genre by overwhelming you. I distinctly remember walking out of that movie thinking "I've never seen anything like that before"

I have to agree about the first Die Hard. As nate said, it redefined the action genre completely. After this movie, every following movie was "Die-Hard-On-A-Plane" (Passenger 57, Executive Decision, Air Force One), "Die-Hard-On-A-Bus" (Speed), "Die-Hard-On-A-Boat (Under Seige, Speed II), "Die-Hard-On-A-Train" (Under Siege II), and "Die-Hard-On-A-Stadium" (Sudden Death), plus others I've probably forgot about.
As while a number of these flicks suck, the very fact that so many movies tried to duplicate the original Die Hard speaks to how good it is.
And when I first saw it, I was very skeptical about Willis as the lead, and this was coming as a fan of his on Moonlighting. But he became a star because he was really great in this movie.

I remember arguing with a friend of mine in college tha he was stupid to put The band in his top ten bands of all time. I never even saw The Last Waltz. Well sooooo mnay years later I finally saw it ...loved it...and was I a wrong headed douche bag that didn't know shit!
BTW The Weight is perhaps one of the greatest filmed songs ever.

Muddy Waters with Butterfield on harp and the rest of The Band backing him up is incredible to see. I didn't know Scorcese was involved with The Last Waltz until years after I watched it for the first time.
I went out and got Dexter after hearing the show talk about it and seeing the thread about it. I also went out and got The Hudsucker Proxy after hearing Dave go on about it. Great flick. I didn't know it was a Coen Bros. movie.

I saw Close Encounters of the Third Kind for the first time last weekend.
I don't think I saw Back to the Future until I was 18.

saw casablanca in my late 20s. very good film, enjoyed it thoroughly. what was more amazing than anything is how many iconic phrases have come from that movie.

I saw it for the first time when I was in college. I found several things amazing about it, the first being the same thing sailor found.
The second was how funny it was. It really had a lot funny dry lines that were said perfectly.
Finally, there's not a bad role in the whole movie. Every character and every actor playing them was perfect.

Isn't that supposed to happen in the reverse order? My grandpa's Sox are so loud I have to leave the house sometimes.
