Did anyone catch the first episode after the Home Run Derby last night?

For an ESPN series, it looks pretty well made. John Turturro make a better Billy Martin than I thought he would and Oliver Platt personifies the George Steinbrenner that we all knew and hated. It was pretty cool to remember all that was going on in my hometown at that time and it's nice to see all of the "behind the scenes" stuff that they didn't report in the papers.

A little trivia: The double for the actor portraying Graig Nettles is none other than Jeffrey Maier (sp). Remember the kid that interfered with the homerun during the 96 playoffs? Yes, THAT Jeffrey Maier

Anyway I'm enjoying it so far.

How about you?

I thought it was really good, I wish we got to hear what the Rangers were doing though!! I'm sure they were losing...

How many episodes is it going to be?

It was pretty good. I liked the clips of the real yanks and what NY looked like on "77".

They did a good job showing what Martin and George must be like. I will tell you this I surprised Martin didnt want Reggie because he was a lefty. Maybe the boss knew what he was doing back in the day? I kind of felt bad for Reggie when Whitey, mantle and martin were drinking in the bar. They acted like real assholes towards Reggie. I had no idea munson didnt like reggie either and that he would go out of his way to talk shit?

I will continue to watch this seems very interesting. I may have to read the book to see what was really what.

(this is based on a book, right?)

Also, the book 'Balls' by Graig Nettles talks about the stuff going on. Really enjoyable if you were a Yankee fan during that time.

Gotta figure 3 or 4 more as a catcher (knees were going bad)

Then maybe another 2 or 3 as a first baseman or DH

Some stats:
1970 Rookie of the Year
1976 AL MVP
1973 - 1975 Gold Glove winner
7 time All Star

His stats don't do him justice but he was certainly one of the games greatest clutch hitters

Was it actually good, or just good for an ESPN show? The commercials looked terrible. And I don't think ESPN has ever had a good original show or movie. Remember that Pete Rose movie? Ick.

So far it looks a lot better than the Pete Rose movie and the acting is a ton better

Yeah, the book is called Ladies and Gentlemen, The Bronx is Burning (http://www.amazon.com/Ladies-Gentlemen-Bronx-Burning-Baseball/dp/0374175284) by Jonathan Maher. It's a decent book, it covers 1977 in New York City. He writes about all the turmoil with the Yankees (Steinbrenner vs. Billy vs. Reggie), the blackout, the Son of Sam, how Abe Beame was a shitty mayor, etc...

A lot of fascinating stuff. The chapter on the blackout has a lot of great information and stories.

I'm not a Yankees fan now, but I was then, and so far I like it. Wasn't aware this was based on a book because I was going to say if this is a show about the Yankees, then why do we have a side story about the Son of Sam as well. I know that was huge news back then in NY (according to the dates they showed, those two girls killed in front of the house was on my 10th birthday), but for a show I thought was solely about the Yanks, this seemed out of place.

I have to assume that this isn't a project that was run by Steinbrenner first. We all know he is a dick, but man he really has come across as an asshole so far. I mean, for being the storied franchise that they are, they hadn't done shit since 1964. Martin comes in, goes wire to wire in 1st place, and gets them back to the World Series. Yeah, they got swept by the Reds, but where were they for over 10 years before that and King George is gonna throw a temper tantrum?

Anybody still watching?
It's not bad. I like the use of vintage footage, and John Turturo is always worth watching, I think he is the most underated actor out there.
The guy playing Reggie is a little too pretty i think. I knew Reggie was a little egotistical, but was he really as bad as the show makes him out to be?
All-in-all, a pretty interesting series...

I sold George Steinbrenner from that show a radar detector.

Still watching and still liking. I personally don't like when they show the vintage footage though. Not because I don't want to see it, as that part is cool, but while watching in HD those shots look so bad on my set that I want to look away.

Something I'm confused about is how they are portraying Martin. I mean, let's be honest here, the guy was not exactly a good looking guy, yet in every episode he has some new chick who is like 20-30 years younger than him. I don't mean to speak ill of the dead, but who the hell would be lining up to fuck Billy Martin?
