My friend recently bought a new cellphone, and he set his ringtone to be an mp3 of The Sopranos theme song. He didn't have to buy this ringtone. He just dropped an mp3 from his computer onto his phone, and voila. But he has Cingular/AT&T...
I have Verizon. I heard that Verizon is tight-asss with this shit and basically forces its users to either buy their ringtones from their crappy selection of songs, or no dice. Is this true? I want to make a custom ringtone.

I can do the same thing on my sony ericcson phone and I have T-Mobile. I read that Verizon puts a block on all its phones to not allow this in any way at all. You must buy your ringtones from them.
Verizon sucks, their plans are over priced and there service isnt any better. IMO

I have a Verizon phone, and there is a work around. If you change the extension from .mp3 to .mid and copy into your My Sounds directory, you can set an mp3 as a ring tone. I don't know if this is true for all Verizon phones, or just my Samsung.

Is it a Motorola?? I was able to "hack" my Verizon Motorola following instructions on www.howardforums.com. I can now use Motorola Phone tools and do all sorts of cool shit with the phone. You'll definitely be able to find info on that howardforums website.

This is the method I use for my VX9800, and it works perfectly. It seems sort of difficult at first, but once you do it once, its pretty easy. And if your phone has bluetooth, you don't even need the cable for it. Bitpim has bluetooth support now. It is all taken from here (http://www.howardforums.com/showthread.php?threadid=762550) :
Step 1: Plug Cable into phone and into computer
Step 2: Open Bitpim, QPST, or any other program that can open the phones file system
Step 3: Create a new folder for your ringers (i.e. Ring) this is done because there is a limit of 3mb for the brew folder, and if you put more than that, your phone dies (like my first phone R.I.P.)
Note: If your using the memory card for your ringers, you don't need to make the directory for your phone, you can use the memory card directory (mmc1)
Step 4: Open notepad and create several blank dummy files (i.e. 1.mid, 2.mid, 3.mid) until you have a number equal to the number of ringers you want on your phone
Step 5: Go to the directory Brew/16452/lk/mr
Step 6: Place your dummy files here
Step 7: Reboot your phone
Step 8: Open The Dload folder on your phone, and save my_ringtone.dat to your computer
Step 9: Open my_ringtone.dat in Winhex (or other hex editor of your choice)
Step 10: on the right hand side you will see the names of the locations of your dummy files (i.e. brew/16452/lk/mr/0.mid), replace these with the location of your files (i.e. ring/hello.mp3)
Note: THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT for the ringers, you must start typing on the "B" in brew, and if your ringers ends before the original file name ends go to the hex sections, and erase the remaining segment by using "00", not by using spaces in the text portion.
ALSO: The Path Names And File Names Are CASE SENSITIVE. For those who don't know what that means, if you spelt ring with a capital R when you created the directory, all your files names must be "Ring/hello.mp3" if you use "ring/hello.mp3" IT WILL NOT WORK
Step 11: Now just overwrite your old my_ringtone.dat with the new one, delete your my_ringtonesize.dat, and delete your dummy files.
Step 12: We're Done

And if this doesn't work, angrymissy is right, go to howardforums.com.

Howardforums is the best. A Rep from T-mobile told me about that site for software upgrades on my phone and how and where to do it.

I guess people have figured away around these ringtone blocks. I hope Crip read this thread b/c he has been trying for awhile to put some ringtones on his phone. Now this may help him.

Okay, UPDATE:
I tried e-mailing the file to my phone, as well as uploading it to my VZWPix account. Neither worked. The phone couldn't download the attachment from the e-mail, and when I used VZWPix, it told me I had to go to my VZWPix account on the web to listen to the sound file. (Note: I also had to spend a dollar to find this out, because I had to subscribe to mobile web for 24 hours.)
This fucking sucks.

My phone doesn't have Bluetooth and I don't own a USB adapter for it... So I guess if I can't do it wirelessly, I'm fucked.
Verizon is queer.

How do I find out if my phone can even play mp3 ringtones? I would hate to spend $7 on this cable and find out it doesn't even work. Already wasted a buck on this stupid mobile web.
I have a Samsung SCH-a570. It's a very barebones phone, got it free with my contract.

bitpim converts mp3 files to a different format im pretty sure. check out: http://www.howardforums.com/forumdisplay.php?f=38 and do a search on your phone for info.

I've got a samsung a990. I have a microSD card that I use to copy files to and from the phone. Putting mp3 ringtones on my phone is easy. I just copy the mp3 into the My Sounds directory, then I change the file extension from .mp3 to .mid. Thats it. I usually also copy the files off the SD card and onto the phone once I put the card back in.

same here, except it gives me problems when I try to drop an mp3 in. It may be a combination of my computer/phone/filesize. I will have to try again some time. Also will try that .mid workaround suggested.

if you are trying to send an entire song that is probably where the problem is. No ringtone needs to be 3-4 minutes long as the ringer wont ring that long.
You need to download audacity open the song in audacity and then cut away the parts you dont need any longer. Pick a 20 second segment you want. Then export as an MP3 file and then e-mail the file to yourself.
