My vote is for Rakim.

Most say Rakim, and I think I agree. Lyrics, Flow and Gimmick make a great MC. You have to objectively separate production which is tough with those Eric B beats.

I think Big L was better based on those three things but he came along 6 years later so I still give the edge to Rakim for innovation. But again Diamond D, Showbiz and Lord Finesse on production hard to separate.

Followed by in order:
KRS One
Chuck D
Q-Tip
Guru
Tupac & Notorious BIG & NAS(even though I don't like their music, talent can't be denied)
Kool Kieth
Ice-T(not cube)

And then modern greats that have the skill but not quite the rep yet:
MF Doom (Post KMD)
J-Live
Mr. Lif
Acrobatik

2pac is my favorite musician of all time, not just rapper and i love all types of music. The guy's work ethic was ridiculous, the amount of music he made in such a short period of time, especially after he was released from prison in 95 til he died in 96 is nothing short of amazing. The things he said, good or bad just hit me in a way no other rapper does. I think he was so talented and it's sad to think of where his talent might have taken him. I couldn't even narrow down a list of my favorite songs because theres so many but i will say that his most popular songs like california love, hit em up, i get around etc are all my least favorites. He was just so human and intelligent, i just love the guy. Theres just too many songs to list but heres a few along with a few from some talent DJ's on youtube that are keeping his music alive with awesome remixes. Haters bash away.

I agree with that 100% but I dont even think Biggie is the best ever. I think 2pac was 1 of the most overrated ever! I liked some of his work but he gets way too much credit and respect for someone who I though was avg at best! That just my opinion though!

Best Ever, dont know but Eminem has to be in the conversation!

Rawkus
01-08-2011, 12:46 PM
the videos i posted were to try to give another side to people that hear 2pac and all they think of is "oh yea california love is alright". Personally, i think his commercial stuff is way overrated and his other material is criminally underrated. #2, i love biggie he never dropped a bad verse and his first album is perfection. But it's gets old to me that whenever i bring up 2pac the immediate next comment is biggie's better.

I think lyrically biggie had the edge on him. Lyrically eminem and big L do too but, do they have the entire package? i don't think so. When you look at greatest rapper and you take into account everything: Lyrics, cultural impact, message, voice, quality/amount of material, and finally that intangible Aura kind of thing that, to me, only a few other musicians have had(kurt cobain) it doesn't even come to in my opinion. If it's all about punchlines & rhymes, then yes 2pac wasn't #1 but to me, he made hiphop about something more than that.

If it was greatest lyricist of all time 2pac wouldn't be in my top 5 it would be biggie, big L, eminem, early nas then...i don't know about # 5, i ramble a lot

Nasty Nas is still a great lyricist. To say 'early Nas' is to do him dirty.

Biggie
Nas
Ghostface
Del the Funkee Homosapien

the videos i posted were to try to give another side to people that hear 2pac and all they think of is "oh yea california love is alright".

Lyrically eminem and big L do too but, do they have the entire package? i don't think so. dude you are asking who is the best rapper. If you had posted a thread i love tupac and put up the videos id have been here sayin tupac was good. Thats not what this is about.

And also, if you are asking people who is the best rapper ever, the people answering probably listen to rap. Anyone who really is a fan you dont have to show them Tupac stuff, we know it. We have heard it. thats why we are in the convo

Thats why its a debate. If someone says tupac, someone says Big, someone says Nas, I can accept those possibly arguments.

As for Snacks, I dont put Eminem in this discussion. Eminem is very very good, but if Eminem wasnt white, no one would put him in this discussion. Even more so, he probably woulda sold about 25% of the albums he did. i prefaced that he is very very good cause his first 2 or 3 albums were good and worth buying, but thats not why a large part bought it. In fact, id estimate that half the people who own Eminem albums have never even heard a Biggie song past Hypnotize or Big Poppa. Those arent rap fans. KRock and those kinda places playing eminem (only cause he is white, which is shameful in itself) that sold him so many albums
