The iPhone thread gave me the idea for this thread because lots of people were talking about phones that aren't iPhones in that thread. Do you like the phone that you have? Would you rather have something else?

I recently got the Blackberry 8830 World Phone. It's got some kind of international features I won't really use, and it has some kind of GPS capability that may have been disabled by Verizon, but I really like it a lot. It's light years better than my old Blackberry, and it has a nice soft case with a magnet that disables the phone when it's in the case, so no more accidental pants calls. The browser seems much better than on my old model, and it uses a little trackball in the middle rather than the track wheel on the side, which I like a lot. It's also the first gen of Blackberries to have a media player, so I have it loaded up with songs, video and pics. It also has upgradable memory -- I'm not sure how long Blackberries have had that feature. I was able to get a 1gb mini SD card to upgrade it from Amazon for only $6. Overall, so far, I like the phone a lot.

I have the very boring Motorazr V3, but I only use it to talk on, and not very often. I hate talking on the phone. I'm sure that it has features that I don't even know about.

I think it's what Tony Soprano has.

To me it's just a phone. As long as the service is good, I'm fine.
I don't get why people make a bigger deal out of cell phones than need be.

if you can put a 1 gig sd disk in,can you put a 4 or 8 gig sd disk in when they come out with them later this year? or does the phone limit the size?

My price ceiling when buying a new phone is $0 with a two-year contract extension, so I have a four-year-old Nokia 3595, which I've been very happy with.

https://www.t-mobile.com/images/products/Nokia_3595/162x160.jpg

I decided to log in to my T-mobile account and see what phones I can upgrade to for free with a two-year extension, and here are my options.

Nokia 6030

Anyone, have an opinion on any of these?

I have an old blackberry that I originally got for free and used on verizon's wireless plan. I was getting the service free from my last employer. Now I miss my blackberry. What provider do you use? How much do you pay for voice and data? I checked verizons site and they are at $80 a month. That's a bit too high for me. Any suggestions?

I've got the same one (6202b). The phone really does suck, but I usually have my real camera with me anyway. It's not a bad phone, but sometimes it does this thing where it says I have to insert the sim card (even though it there). I just turn off the phone and turn it back on, and it's fine. It's annoying, though. If I don't realise it's in that mode, I can miss a lot of calls.

To be honest, the best performing phone (if all you need is a phone) I've ever had was my old Motorola Startac. The speakerphone unit for it worked great in my car. I've yet to find a decent one for my Nokia or my older nokia.

I'm on Verizon as well. I think my voice is $35 and the data portion is $45. The voice part for my particular plan is discounted through work, and I get reimbursed through work for the data part, so I don't really have any good suggestions.

i fuckin' hate nextels and the supposed adults who think it's ok to have walkie-talkie chats on the subway. bad enough i need to hear you yelling into the thing, but i have to hear your friend's garbled response? fuck that! then one day i saw a chick using one and guess what? you can turn the fuckin' volume down and use it like a regular phone even in walkie-talkie mode. imagine, turning it down and holding it to your ear instead of inconveniencing everyone else??

yup, there's a button on the top of pretty much all nextels that turns the speaker off. but that would mean that joe sixpack would have move a finger to do it, ain't gonna happen.

We all got nextel's at work about 4 years back because we had normal walkie talkies and normal phones and wanted to have both in one device. About 2 years later no one was using the walkie talkie feature anymore because it sucks.

I'm a Nokia man through and through, and own a bunch of them. For battery life, durability, and ease of use they just can't be beat. Because I have AT&T/Cingular service, I just swap the SIM cards back and forth between them. You can also do this if you have T-Mobile.

Verizon and Sprint use CDMA technology and you must activate an entire phone, as there is no SIM card. You're pretty much stuck with having just one phone for the duration of your contract.

If you have either AT&T or T-Mobile and you're looking for a new phone and don't want to wait until your contract is up, I'd suggest buying one of their pre-paid phones. The Nokia 6030 is currently $29.99 on T-Mobile's web site. All you have to do is throw out the SIM that comes with the pre-paid and throw yours in.

If you have AT&T and buy a T-Mobile phone (or vice versa) there are plenty of web sites that will "unlock" the phone for you. That means you can use it with any company that uses SIM card technology. It's also the best way to go if you travel abroad. Instead of paying international rates, you just buy a pre-paid SIM card in the country you're visiting and put it in your phone. It's WAY cheaper, and all of Europe uses SIM technology.

I told ya I'm a gadget freak!

Even though I'm a Nokia guy, I'm currently using a Motorola PEBL because I couldn't live without Bluetooth any longer so I was forced to buy a phone a few months ago and it was the cheapest thing available because it's a discontinued model.

It's not bad, but the battery life is awful and the operating system is a nightmare compated to Nokia's straightforward style.

The nice thing about my phone is that when I hold it up to my face to talk with someone, my cheek makes all sorts of commands on the touchpad. It launches My Tasks usually but sometimes the media player launches and starts playing music or my voicemail comes up.

I usually use it in handsfree though so other than that, it's a good phone. I also use it as a modem at work to get to the internet since the firewall is cinched down pretty tight. ;o)

My phone stinks compared to your phones, but it sends and receives calls and text messages. That is all you really need. I am using Boost Mobile (Where you at?!) and their phones are slightly better than Tracfone.

Only thing I wish I could do is use my own sound clips as rintones and use my own pics for a background. That's the only thing I miss.

I have a blackberry 8700 and while it isn't the newest blackberry out there it is my first. I don't know how I lived with out this. I got it for $199 with a 2 year contract extension on Cingular. I absolutely love it. It has none of the features I don't need (i.e. camera...seriously, for me that is an absolutely useless feature), but on the negative side of that it doesn't have AIM available (at least on Cingular/AT&T). You can use just about every other messenger out there except AIM. They have it for this phone on T-Mobile and they have it for every other Cingular phone just not the 8700, boo.

The data plans are good on Cingular as well. I share a plan with my fiancee, so collectively we have a $39.99 a month plan and then my unlimited blackberry data/email is an additional $29.99. The only downside to that is that the $29.99 plan won't allow you to use blackberry enterprise, so you can't check email on a work server (you'd have to upgrade to the higher data plan). For me it works out great, I can get my gmail, I can get Andrew's hotmail, really anything I need, plus I don't have to get email from my office on the weekends so it gives me time to disconnect until they decide to shell out the bucks for the full data plan (I'm hoping this doesn't happen). I like cingulars service though the data is sometimes a little slow, but all in all a great phone.

I just got a Samsung a990 a few months ago. Its claim to fame is its 3.2 mega pixel camera. The camera isn't great, but its a lot better than most camera phones. It has some trouble focusing, so much that I've ended up just turning off the auto focus feature. It takes decent video too. It has a microSD slot that I use to transfer pics and music between the phone and my computer. It can play music, and you can set unique ringtones/pics for each contact. The top part also swivels around, so that when you close the phone again, the screen is facing outwards, and you can use it like a digital camera. Makes taking pictures a little easier. Overall I'm happy with the phone, it is more than worth the $50 I actually paid for it.

I have the same phone. I never have the cheek problem. I guess I don't press it as hard into my face as KC. I do get the screen all oily from my cheek, but I have a screen protector on it to protect from scratches and whatnot.

My only complaint is the lack of system ram. I have 2gig SD card in the machine for storage, but if I browse around some websites, the system ram gets full and I need to reset the phone.

nah, don't buy apple stock. they plan to sell 10 million phones (http://www.slate.com/id/2169440/) by the end of 2008, during that same time nokia will sell 550 million. they're trading way too high right now.

I previously mentioned that I was fairly happy with my Nokia 6102b, but...

The volume control is broken. I can barely hear anyone anymore. I got a free upgrade to this phone a little more than a year ago. I've checked the website, and I'm not due for another free upgrade until Jan of 2008.

I have what is now AT&T (originally Suncom, bought by Cingular, now back to at&t). I've had the same service (even though the company keeps changing hands) for about 7 years. Anyone have any ideas on how I can replace my phone, without spending a bunch of money?

I'm going to call them in a bit, but I know their customer service people can suck. When I got this phone, they told me I couldn't get a free or cheap one. Turns out, I could.

Help me!!!

PapaBear - check out Cingular/AT&T's pre-paid phones. They're usually pretty cheap and all you have to do is replace the SIM card with your own. Just don't tell the salesman that's what you're doing. They don't like the fact that some people have figured this out and don't pay 200 bucks for a new phone.

Hmm... very clever! Thanks, budday! If I can't argue my case with them, I'll try that. Really... it sucks. I've been with these people for 7 years. They keep changing ownership. I've stuck around longer than they have!

I have to wait until the end of October to upgrade my phone. The volume control is broken, so I can barely hear anyone I'm talking to. Some friends told me to go get insurance then break the phone, but I'm not willing to risk that they changed their policies. Especially since they already have me on record as saying my phone is already broken.

Did you try the "Squeeze Play"? I did this last year.
I called my carrier and said"I have been a customer for years, but so and so is offering me this phone, and this plan for only this much per month. I think I want to cancel"

"Please hold while I talk to a manager"

"Sir. I can offer you this phone with XY&Z for 9.99. All you have to is commit to 1 more year"

"I'll take 2. Thank you, so much."

I'm actually going to do something similar to that in October. My son wants to get on my plan, so I'm going to tell them someone else is offering something good. That way, I hope to get two REALLY good phones. BTW... I've been with Suncom/Cingular/AT& for about 6 or 7 years.

I just switched to a refurb Blackjack that ATT gave me for 20 bucks.

This was an upgrade from my Razor (actually Razors, as I had a free replacement sent to me). I had the Razor for the last two years and it was two years of me convincing me not to smash the phone into the wall like I used to do with my old phones. The only thing I liked was the alarm clock on that pile of leper shit.

The Blackjack is nice and I've been pretty happy with Windows mobile. My wife has the Blackberry Pearl, and the Blackberry OS eats a thinly-sliced donkey dick compared to Windows. Ironic that the alarm clock on the Blackjack is the only thing I hate about it. My favorite aspect of the phone is using musicdock.com to listen to my xmonline account. The wife and I were fishing for leopard shark on Tomales bay a few weeks ago, and I realised that I could listen to R&F. Fantasmafuckingriffic.

Oh and if it shakes around in your pocket too much, the battery jiggles loose and the phone shuts down. Apparently a lot of people have this problem, so avoid Motorola phones.

I mentioned a while back that I'd soon be able to upgrade my phone with my AT&T service. I'm looking at two phones that they are offering deals on right now. One is the Samsung Sync and the other is the Blackberry Pearl.

I can get a new Sync for 50 bucks after a 50 buck rebate, or a refurbed Sync for 20 bucks with no rebate.

I can get a refurbed Pearl for 50 bucks with no rebate.

I'm leaning toward the Pearl. I do a shitload of texting and love the keyboard layout. I rarely use the web options on my current phone, just because it's annoying. If I did use web options, it would mostly be to check my email.

Though I sometimes carry my real digital camera with me, I like the option of taking halfway decent pics with a phone. Both of these phones would probably satisfy that need.

I don't want to spend more than I already am on my phone plan. Right now, I have 5MB of Internet/media on my plan. In the past I've only used less than 1MB per month, but like I said, it's just not worth doing on my current phone. I want that option, but I don't plan on using a great deal.

Are there extra charges with using a Blackberry?

Are refurbed phones a bad idea?

PLEASE HELP ME!!!

Got the Samsung M610 the other day. Haven't bough a new phone for 4 years so I'm probally prone to being overimpressed but paid 70 bucks for it on a new 3yr contract and I'm more than satisfied.

Can't speak for reception yet but voice quality is it's only weakness. Everything else blew me away. 2Mpx camera with 320x240 video's 15frames/sec are fantastic quality in good lighting. Bluetooth file transfer works great and the Java games look fantastic for a cell. I didn't want a text phone or Blackberry so for what I bought it for it's a great buy. Plus the phone is real slim but is huge and comfortable when you flip.

T-Mobile MDA.

When it comes stock it's pretty slow and crippled.

I upgraded it from Windows Mobile 5 to Windows Mobile 6. It does just about everything that the iPhone does if not more, including:

- Wi-Fi
- Full internet browser
- Streams XM
- Plays all Youtube videos
- Emulates NES, holds lots of ROMs
- Runs GPS software in the car (had to buy a $50 receiver)

Not bad for a 2 year old phone. My only complaint is the processor could use a boost and the camera sucks in low-light.

I have no idea how you could listen to XM through a phone, but I'm curious to find out how people have.

If you get a Voyager, you have to switch your plan to Verizon's new Nationwide Plans. They're really pushing the "premium" package for the Voyager, as its the first phone to come out for VZ that can actually perform everything.

its not a bad phone when signal strength is high, these phones only use digital signal, so if your in a bad area you wont have any reception. not sure why they dont have analog as a backup..

screen is nice and big and its a nice sized phone. its mising a few apps that would come in handy. like calendar, alarm clock and a few other little things.
the speaker is super load, and ring tones play just as loud.

battery life is good i can get about 2.5 days of usage before i have to charge.

also takes sim cards so you can just swap your card in and out of the phone and wont have to worry about inputing all your contacts again.

If I can get a Razr2 with a cool looking skin (like a Speck) then I'd go with the Razr2. The fingerprint issues that the Razr2 and other products similar to it skeeve me out, so the Voyager will probably have the same problems.

This would all be avoided if the E815 could handle Navigation. It's a great phone.

Well, there's nothing they can do to get non-CDMA phones working on their networks.

alright folks, sometimes i can be a tad technologically slow. my plan with Verizon is up in about 3 weeks so i'm gonna re-up with them and do the whole "new every two" deal. i was thinking about getting a BlackBerry. Am i to understand that not only would i pay my normal plan rate to verizon but an additional fee on top of that to be able to access stuff on my BlackBerry? What does this additional fee cover?

If you are talking about a data plan, it will give you a certain amount of data you can transfer (sending photos, browsing internet, emails) for a blanket fee. Usually you can get an unlimited usage plan. Text messages are usually included, but you get a different limit on them than your data usuage.

You can still use email, internet, etc. without a data plan, but you will need some lube with the next phone bill.

No. Verizon has a separate plan for Voice/Data usage with blackberry.

For 100 bucks, you get 450 minutes + the Verizon "in" calling plan, plus Data Access for Email, Unlimited Text, Picture, Video & Instant Messaging, Unlimited Martin Brodeur Bashing, Unlimited National Calling and Unlimited Night & Weekend Minutes

For 80 bucks, you get everything listed above without the unlimited messaging.

If you don't mind me asking, what do you intend to use the Blackberry for? You might save some money if you go with an EnV or Voyager instead. At this point, at least to me, a Voyager is a lot more appealing than a Blackberry, especially with the Premium plan. You get VZ Navigator, ESPN MVP, + the unlimited messaging and data.

BTW:

There's a link on Verizon's Mainpage called "Employee Discounts" - it's under "Learn More" on the front page.

If you put in your work email, you can find out if you're eligible for a discount. Because companies don't exactly excell at advertising voluntary benefits, you may be eligible and not even know it.

Of course, this'll probably only work if you work for a mid-size to large company (think 200+ employees or more) that does regular business with Verizon.

i get the discount its 12% but its only off of the main price of the plan, not off any add ons (i have unlimited messaging and pay the full price.)

I refuse to sign up for any plan that has unlimited Martin Brodeur bashing. After hearing a lot about these plans I think i might be leaning towards the Voyager. I'm just not keen on paying a hundred bucks a month for service.

The Voyager "National" plan has everything plus unlimited plus ESPN MVP and Navigation for 80 a month. That's the PREMIUM plan. The select plan is still unlimited without all the bells and whistles at 60.

One of the first photoshops I ever did was on the old OA.com - it was Daneyko on the ice, hooking a giant bottle of Jack Daniels with his stick.

Good times.

In a sad postscript to this story, I met him at a charity event and he signed a hat for me that I sold on Ebay to fund Liz's breast cancer walk.

I wandered into the Verizon store to take another look at the Voyager.

I've decided that I don't want it. THere's something about the interface and too much change from what I'm using now that bothers me. The phone itself is a remarkable piece of technology. But I'm not 100% digging it.

So I'm going back to the EnV or the Razr2. Or I might just stick with the E815. I don't know. It's annoying.

It only took me 3.5 months, but I finally settled on a new phone. I picked up the Moto Q 9c (Sprint) on Wednesday, and I love it. Everyone seems to go, "No touchscreen?" when they see it, but I love the keyboard (very easy to use, even with my giant hands) and it's easy to sync videos and music with it through Media Player. The GPS works with apps like Google Maps, and this version of Windows Mobile isn't a total cluster-f like some of the others I've seen.

I made my purchase -

I got the Env. I'll use it for a bit, and if I don't like it, I can switch back to the E815. So far, so good, but it's a lot more complicated than the E815.

And I just found out that Verizon is coming out with the Env2. Which I think I want to upgrade to. The front buttons are better for my bigger hands, and I like the display better.

This thin music-centric GSM phone has much in common with Nokia's 6500 Classic and 7900. While it lacks 3G, it weighs in about an ounce lighter, while adding music features such as a full 3.5mm headphone jack, memory card slot, FM radio, and dedicated music keys. Other features include stereo Bluetooth, QVGA display, 2 megapixel camera, and Flash Lite 2.1

Ok, so this 3G bs came out.. a couple cool new things, but not worth buying it if you already have an iphone. BUT WAIT!

Apple has 100 applications from the 3G available for free for current 'old' Iphone owners.
They also have 100 applications that you can pay for.

Some of them are completely useless, but the 2 I like best (so far) are:

UrbanSpoon: using gps, this app will tell you the nearest restaurants based on either cuisine, price or location....or any combo of those...or completely random! Its a fun new way to discover new places to eat.

Pandora Radio: I'm guessing its been around before, but its new to Iphone and to me!
This is VERY cool. Its a free service that allows you to set up your own "radio stations".
You choose a band, they play a song from that band, then they play a related song/band. For example if you select The Beatles, youll hear a beatles tune, then maybe a mccartney song, then maybe a cover song by someone, all along the theme stays with the beatles, and maybe every 4th song is the beatles or a member thereof. You dont have to have Iphone to use this service, so go try it out. Great way to find some songs you never thought of putting in your mp3 player yet!

Theyve got a ton of games available too, but I'm not that big into phone games.
I downloaded a baseball almanac that has every stat since the late 1800s-2007.

You can also now leave voice notes to yourself like most other phones.

I'm still lovin my old Iphone!:clap:

The Mp3 function is great. I have all the night of 100 podcasts on there as well as all the 92.3 podcasts. I listen to it on the train every day. Great stuff.
If you unplug the headphones the sound quality blasts out really well. It's kind of amazing.

It needs charging every day if I listen all day, but that isn't too bad.

Oh, the camera sucks and so does the video.

And I'm afraid I'll lose it it's so light. But other than that it rocks.

Samsung SCH U740

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y210/thricecringe/samsung-sch-u740_02.jpg

Great for texting, although the buttons are a bit on the small side, and perfectly fine for talking. Camera is adequate. Screen is huge and bright. Battery life is above average. I've had the phone for about 6 weeks and I've got zero complaints.

I have this phone now too. It's everything I could have wanted in my 1st REAL cellphone. I got a 2 gig micro SD card and put music, ringtones and pics on it. The keyboard is tiny but I haven't found too much of a problem texting my peeps, yo.

Over all I'm satisfied with it too. Battery is good for days, screen is nice, camera isn't horrible, texts nicely.

And I got it on some sort of stupid store discount. Yes, I know it's a lie but it made me feel better when he said it.
