Die Hard 4.0 was the one i was waiting for and i'm pretty happy with the results.....
the action is non stop....very over the top.....it reminded me of True Lies because it kept trying to up the ante.....the humor was good and Justin Long held up his side of the chemistry equation with bruce.....the villians were a little bland but the stunts were so outrageous you hardly noticed......the daughter angle was okay but strictly a minor sub-plot

I agree it had some funny lines, and on the whole was an ok movie.
But what reminded me of true lies was what took me out of the movie: the fighter jet scene was just hokey and hack.
also- the nypd doesnt cover NJ. hollywood.
i liked that the day after watching a movie about traffic lights and power going out, that it actually happened on a smaller scale in nyc. howd they do that??

I thought it was really mediocre. Even Die Hard 2, as kinda crappy as it was, still "felt" like a Die Hard movie. This felt like a random, generic action movie that had "Die Hard" slapped onto it. The villian was REALLY unimpressive, and his motivations were really pointless and vague. The action was totally packed with really obvious looking CGI, and it was all obviously toned down and surprisingly bloodless so they could get a PG-13.
In all, it wasn't terrible, but it wasn't really that good.

Die Hard (one) was a classic because it mixed the sublime and the silly into a perfect mix....all these action movies are silly but it ultimately comes down to how enjoyable they are.....my personal rating on the four die hards
one....the best by far.....(and deservedly just topped the list of best action movies ever made)
the rest....pretty good as action movies go
my biggest complaint about Die Hard 4 is not how incredibly insane the stunts were or how anemic the bad guy was but that McClain's wife is totally missing this time out

For me it's not that some of the action scenes are over the top but that they were just not consistent with the John McLane vibe from the first 2 movies. For example I never pictured the character as having the skills to survive the bunch of car chases we saw in this movie-I just saw him as a guy who was happy scrapping if he needed to. Still I thought the movie kicked ass.

i think i most appreciated that they went all out and were full committed to entertain considering most of the other summer blockbusters were so tainted by burn out

I guess I'm not interested in this movie. I love the first Die Hard. It just works on some level where the subsequent movies didn't. I always liked the fact that, yes, even though it's highly improbable that a shoeless cop can fend off a gang full of terrorists in a skyscraper, they made it somewhat plausible. Also, John McClane wasn't superhuman or given any kind of outrageous skills that he can use in really implausible cases. Compare McClane in the first Die Hard with, say, Tom Cruise in the second Mission Impossible -- in the latter you never felt the hero was in any serious danger because he could always pull some completely implausible stunt in mid-air of of a motorcycle or something like that. In the first Die Hard, you always knew the hero was going to win, but the plot was such that there was legitimate tension because of the hero's vulnerability. Taking the franchise even further over the top is a move in the wrong direction if you ask me.

This felt like a random, generic action movie that had "Die Hard" slapped onto it.
That's actually how all the sequels came about. Producers would read scripts and realize they'd probably make more money with the Die Hard name behind it. They would just change minor details to make it fit John McLean's character.
By the way, the fact that this movie is rated PG-13 and not R shows what an absurd system the current MPAA ratings are. This is PG-13 while something like The Sceience of Sleep is an R? Seriously?!
The current ratings system is pretty lame as it is, but at least rule consistently and with a degree of common sense within your own rules.

the ratings need to be completely overhauled, focusing on educating parents....I'm as liberal as they come but I would hate to be a parent that took a teenager to hostel 2......it was indefensible and morally repugnant.....die hard 4 just covers up some curse words with loud explosions....

"Her" voice was. McLean called her from a pay phone, but then dropped the phone before getting to talk to her.

A terrific action movie. I think people read into movies way too much anymore. They get lost in the media over-exposure or can't get lost into the film experience. I enjoy nothing more than getting into a movie at the theatre. Live Free or Die Hard pulled out all of the typical action movie spots and delivered. I would never place this one on a pedestal like the original, but if you enjoy action.... go see this latest installment.

I buy that with the 2nd one, but even if they did it with the 3rd, they put some more effort into it and it "felt," to me like a DH movie. Probably helped the original director was back, too.
I just think this one really lacked the "everyman" appeal that McClane had in the other films. I know they were still ridiculous, but the first one especially was so much just a dude (a cop, granted) tossed into a crappy situation that he had to deal with. Again, I really think the CGI overload just killed a lot of that sense.
